South African long jumper Luvo Manyonga charged with ‘whereabouts’ anti-doping violation

Luvo Manyonga is the latest prominent athlete to be charged with a ‘whereabouts’ anti-doping violation.

The South African, who famously overcame an addiction to crystal meth to win world gold in the long jump at London 2017, is now facing an uncertain future in the sport after the charge was announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit.

Under the whereabouts rules, which have led to suspensions for world champions Christian Coleman and Elijah Manangoi in the past four months, an athlete risks a two-year ban if found guilty of three missed tests or filing failures in a 12-month period.

Mayonga won world long jump gold back in 2017 but faces an uncertain future in the sport

Manyonga, who won Olympic silver in 2016, previously served an 18-month ban for testing positive for crystal meth in 2012. 

There were reports in his homeland last month that his sister wanted him to return to rehab.
