BREAKING NEWS: Red-hot England captain Joe Root reaches 100 in his 100th Test Match as the visitors bat brilliantly on the first day of their series in India

England captain Joe Root’s electrifying start to 2021 reached a new height on Friday as he scored an outstanding century in his 100th Test on day one against India.

Coming in at 63-2, Root continued his stunning form shown against Sri Lanka as, alongside opener Dom Sibley, he steered his side beyond the 200-mark as England took control against India.

But the day belonged to Root and his magnificent landmark, his third 100 in a row and his 20th Test hundred. He has already passed 500 Test runs for the year, in just his third appearance.

Root brought up his century by fending a Washington Sundar delivery through the leg side for a single. He faced 164 deliveries to reach his latest ton.

His latest three-figure score takes his Test average to 50 and continues his brilliant form that began in Sri Lanka, where he scored a century and double century in England’s 2-0 series win.

Root becomes the third England captain to score 100 in his 100th Test, after Colin Cowdrey and Alec Stewart and only the ninth player in Test history to score three figures in their 100th Test.
