It was right to ban West Indies captain Holder… slow over-rates are the scourge of the modern game

It was right to ban West Indies captain Jason Holder… slow over-rates are the scourge of the modern game
- Jason Holder is banned from final Test against England for his slow over rate
- The West Indies captain had already been on a warning before second Test
- West Indies president Dave Cameron says rules should be changed
David Lloyd for the Daily Mail
It was absolutely right to ban Jason Holder for the third Test, despite the outcry there has been over the ICC’s decision.
The simple truth is that slow over-rates are the scourge of the modern game and the West Indies captain broke the rules.
It is not the first time he’s transgressed and remember that he’d been on a final warning for the last 12 months or so and then he was unofficially warned.

West Indies captain Jason Holder drinks champagne to celebrate their series win over England
Yet still there was no apparent attempt to get close to bowling 15 overs an hour in Antigua. It doesn’t matter that the second Test was over in three days. That’s a lame argument. The regulations were still broken and action had to be taken.
It’s not a question of whether it’s bad for the game. It’s like driving 40mph in a 30mph zone and getting caught.
Match referees are very lenient on the many unnatural breaks going on throughout Test cricket all over the world and it appears no instructions are given to umpires to tell the players to get on with it.

Holder will not be present for the third and final Test after being banned for a slow over-rate
Spectators should be made aware of the situation because, to the outside world, the suspension of a man who has done so much for Test cricket over the last couple of weeks came out of the blue. In football you would know when one of your team’s players is a yellow card away from a ban. It should be made public in cricket, too.
There is no consistency from the ICC because there are plenty of other teams who are just as bad and there are one or two who will never get touched. But that doesn’t make this decision wrong.
There is too much wandering on and off the field and there is no medical reason for players to have drinks outside of the designated breaks. I know that because the ICC have looked into it.
If the referee and umpires did their jobs, we wouldn’t have to ban anyone — but they don’t.
For instance, what does the fourth umpire do? He could be put in charge of telling the bloke wandering on with a towel, ‘I’m sorry you’ve got to stay off until the break’.
I’ve said it before and I will have to keep saying it — get on with the game!

Les médecins optimistes pour la petite Amy
[ad_1]

Real Madrid target Eden Hazard claims he’s ‘made a decision’ over Chelsea future
[ad_1]
Eden Hazard has revealed his mind is made up on his future, increasing Chelsea’s fears that he will ask for a transfer to Real Madrid.
‘I know what I am going to do,’ said Hazard in an interview recorded in early December and set to be broadcast as part of a documentary on French radio station RMC. ‘I have made a decision.’
Chelsea have made no significant progress in persuading the 28-year-old to sign a lucrative long-term contract which is on offer and are braced for him telling them he wants to leave.

Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard has revealed that his mind is made up over his next move
Hazard’s current deal is set to expire next year and there is long-standing interest from Real Madrid, who made an initial approach last year as they searched for a star forward to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Juventus.
Chelsea director and transfer supremo Marina Granovskaia insisted he was not for sale at any price, but there will be a greater incentive to do business when he is only 12 months from walking away on a free transfer.
Reports from Spain have pitched Hazard as this year’s top target for Real and they are already thought to have held preliminary talks with his representatives.
If they have convinced him to move it will boil down to how much the Spanish club offer. Having seen them sell then 33-year-old Ronaldo for £88million, Chelsea will demand more than £100m for Hazard, who is five years younger and frequently pitched into the world’s top five players.

Blues have made no significant progress in persuading him to sign a lucrative long-term deal

Last summer, having dazzled at the World Cup and helped Belgium to the last four, Hazard claimed that it might be time ‘to discover something different’ in his club football.
He did not agitate for a move like his international team-mate Thibaut Courtois, who failed to report for pre-season training under new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri.
Unlike Courtois, who was determined to force through his move to Real Madrid last summer, Hazard returned to London and spoke to Sarri who promised him an attacking style of play which would suit his strengths.
Hazard started the campaign in brilliant style with eight goals in his first 10 games, but Chelsea have faded since and that fresh challenge has become a more attractive proposition.
After a win at Southampton in October he admitted to being torn over his next move.

‘Real Madrid is the best club in the world,’ said Hazard. ‘I don’t want to lie, it is my dream since I was a kid. We will see. I don’t want to talk about this every day. I don’t have time, but we will talk about my future soon.
‘In my head, sometimes I wake up in the morning and think I want to go. Sometimes I think I want to stay. It is a hard decision. It is my future. I am 27 and I will turn 28 in January.
‘It is also when you have a dream and you want to make it happen. It is like I have said a lot of times, if I leave I will be happy, I know if I stay I will be happy.’
On Boxing Day, after scoring twice in a win at Watford to take his goal tally for the club to 101, Hazard said he hoped to go down in Chelsea history with legendary players such as John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba. He added that he would shelve a final decision on his contract until the end of the season.
Last week, Sarri, who has faced regular questions about the contract situation, said: ‘Eden is 28. If he wants to go, I think he has to go. Of course, I hope the opposite. I hope he wants to stay here.’
Hazard arrived at Stamford Bridge from Lille in 2012 at a time when Chelsea were European champions. He has won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League, but Chelsea can no longer count on their status in the Champions League.

Last week, manager Maurizio Sarri, said: ‘Eden is 28. If he wants to go, I think he has to go’
For two of the last three years they have not taken part in the Champions League and have a fight on their hands to return again next season.
Sarri’s team are fourth after 25 games with a two-point advantage over resurgent Manchester United with Arsenal a point further back.
Real Madrid have suffered at times in this post-Ronaldo season. Julen Lopetegui was sacked in October after only 138 days in charge, but they remain on course for a top-four finish and are currently third in La Liga, eight points behind leaders Barcelona.

Nuno Espirito Santo criticises Wolves after they just beat Shrewsbury
[ad_1]
‘I’m not happy with the performance but happy because we got to the fifth round’: Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo criticises his team after narrow FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town
- Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Shrewsbury 3-2 in Tuesday’s FA Cup replay
- Despite seeing his side reach round five Nuno Espirito Santo was not pleased
- Full back Matt Doherty put Wolves ahead after just two minutes of play
- James Bolton equalised nine minutes later after Ollie Norburn set him up
- Shrewsbury then went ahead through Josh Laurent before Doherty got a second
- Ivan Cavaleiro put Wolves into the lead in the second half and they held on
Nick Mashiter, Press Association Sport
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo criticised his under-performing side after they finally beat Shrewsbury in the FA Cup.
Ivan Cavaleiro struck to seal a 3-2 replay win and book a fifth-round trip to Bristol City after Matt Doherty’s first-half double.
The defender continued to haunt the Shrews having also scored the injury-time leveller in the 2-2 draw in Shropshire last month.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was not impressed after seeing his side beat Shrewsbury

The manager saluted Wolves supporters after Tuesday’s 3-2 FA Cup replay win at Molineux
James Bolton and Josh Laurent, after John Ruddy’s gaffe, had put the Shrews 2-1 ahead in the first half before Wolves recovered but Nuno remained unimpressed.
He said: ‘I’m not happy with the performance but happy because we got to the fifth round.
‘This is the most important (thing) but we have to look at the game and see it was not one of the best performances.
‘Everybody is aware of that. It’s job done. Football has these things and you can’t always control them, you have to react to them.
‘There are a lot of things we have to work on on the training ground and get better at.
‘We pick always a strong XI. The idea is always to have a good XI. Today some players did well but I expect more from them. We have to improve a lot of things. We have to work on the training ground.’
Sky Bet League One Shrewsbury, 60 places below gave their Premier League hosts, gave Wolves another scare at Molineux.

Ivan Caveleiro celebrates scoring the goal that sent Wolves into the fifth round of the FA Cup

Wolves full back Matt Doherty celebrates putting his side ahead after only two minutes
Doherty scored after 78 seconds but Bolton’s header and Laurent’s strike, after Ruddy spilt his shot, threatened an upset.
But Doherty headed home in first-half stoppage time before Cavaleiro’s fourth goal of the season, when he cut inside to score, won it after 62 minutes.
Boss Sam Ricketts, who captained Wolves to the League One title in 2014, was proud of his side but felt Cavaleiro’s goal should have been ruled out.
He said: ‘It’s a clear foul. You can’t put two arms around my player’s waist, pull him out of the way and push him to one side.
‘It’s a foul. I’ve not seen what VAR saw and their angles, but it’s a foul. I saw it from my angles and it’s a foul so that disappoints me more than anything.
‘If we’re going to have video technology, let’s get it right.
‘My main emotion is pride. At home, I always felt we had a chance and that proved to be the case and it was just a last-minute goal that cost us.
‘Coming here is a different kettle of fish. The pitch is big and very good and allows Wolves to move the ball really well.’
