Paul Pogba red card compounds the misery for Manchester United after Paris Saint-Germain defeat

Key man Paul Pogba to miss second leg of Manchester United’s Champions League tie with PSG after late sending off as Rio Ferdinand insists: ‘The tie is over after the red card’

  • Paul Pogba was sent off during Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to PSG
  • The Frenchman has been superb under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
  • United’s club record signing will now miss the second leg in Paris on March 6
  • Without their key man, BT Sport’s Rio Ferdinand believes the tie is all but over

Peter Rutzler For Mailonline

It’s a remarkable statistic, but Manchester United‘s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night was their worst ever home defeat in European competition.

But a two-goal margin, as record breaking as it may be, is not one you would say is impossible to overturn. Besides, this is Paris Saint-Germain – the unwilling architects of La Remontada – that we are talking about.

Yet the sting in the tail did not come with Kylian Mbappe‘s poacher’s finish midway through the second half. What makes this tie veer close to insurmountable, will be the absence of Paul Pogba.

United’s record signing has become the talisman his transfer fee demanded of him in recent weeks. Rejuvenated under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the sloppy touches and over-hit passes that had so frustrated supporters were suddenly a thing of the past, buried with the Jose Mourinho annals.

The Frenchman – unleashed by the discipline of Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera – has become United’s linchpin, their tour-de-force, a goal-scorer and creator.

He has scored eight times in 11 games under his interim boss. For the first time in his career, his goal return in the league has reached double figures.

To lose him, then, to a second bookable offence so late in the game, is the toughest pill to swallow for Solskjaer and United.

‘They’ve got to think about going forward and think about finishing in the top four,’ said BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand afterwards.

‘This game, this tie is over after the red card.’

Pogba will miss the return leg in Paris in three weeks’ time. For United and Solskjaer, this poses the difficult challenge of filling the void of their most important – the cornerstone to their revival in recent weeks.

‘That’s a sign of how far he’s come in the last couple of months,’ added Ferdinand.

‘Now he’s being man-marked on the biggest stage by Marquinhos.

‘Then he’s really got to show his quality, how do you deal with being man-marked.

‘Today he didn’t work it out and got frustrated and sent off. But more of that is going to come from Pogba because of what he’s doing on a weekly basis in the Premier League.’

It was a frustrating for the Frenchman, with PSG boss Thomas Tuchel setting out to stifle his creative influence.

Attached to his heels was make-shift midfielder Marquinhos – who excelled in a role he is slowly growing in to.

Frustration boiled over, and for Paul and Ince and Owen Hargreaves, he can have few complaints with the bookings dished out by the albeit card-happy referee Daniele Orsato.

‘It just wasn’t there tonight, everything went against them,’ said Hargreaves. ‘I don’t think there can be any questions about the second booking.’

Pogba’s first yellow was for a chipping away at Marco Verratti, while his second was a high and late challenge on Dani Alves.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need to have a rethink for the second leg on March 6 in Paris

‘That should be a straight red,’ said BT Sport pundit Paul Ince. ‘First one was down to poor petulance and the second one should be a red. Frustration.’

His manager, though disagrees:‘He’s unlucky,’ said Solskjaer afterwards. ‘Paul Pogba is trying to get his body across and Dani Alves is clever enough to put his foot in there. Paul wants to shield the ball.’

Much was made of PSG’s dwindling numbers and the absence of Edinson Cavani and Neymar at Old Trafford.

In three weeks’ time those two star names could well return to help see out the tie at the Parc des Princes.

United, meanwhile, will have to overhaul a two-goal deficit without their most important player.

Kilmarnock midfielder Alan Power escapes SFA ban for head-high challenge on Rangers’ Ryan Jack

Kilmarnock midfielder Alan Power escapes SFA ban for head-high challenge on Rangers’ Ryan Jack

  • Kilmarnock midfielder Alan Power has escaped an SFA suspension
  • Power made a head-high challenge on Ryan Jack of Rangers
  • Rangers’ Allan McGregor charged for challenge versus Aberdeen

Stephen Mcgowan for MailOnline

Kilmarnock midfielder Alan Power has escaped an SFA ban for a head-high challenge on Ryan Jack of Rangers.

Power was booked by referee Alan Muir for a reckless challenge on the Ibrox midfielder during a goalless Scottish Cup draw at Rugby Park on Friday night.

SFA compliance officer Clare Whyte reviewed the incident and decided no action is required, meaning the Irishman is free to face Celtic in the Premiership on Sunday.

Power’s escape will infuriate Rangers further after Allan McGregor *was* retrospectively charged for a challenge on Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson.

The Ibrox club appealed against the two-match ban, with the Scotland goalkeeper set to learn his fate at the hands of an SFA judicial hearing today after Rangers requested a 24-hour delay.

Speaking after Friday night’s match, Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard said of the Power challenge: ‘I’ll be interested to see if there is a citing.

‘I don’t know who points the citings out, but I’ll be interested to see what happens.’ Rangers lost an appeal against a red card for Alfredo Morelos in the 4-2 win over Aberdeen with the Colombian handed a three game ban.

‘I just hope moving forward we can find some consistency,’ added Gerrard.

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believed a booking for the Killie midfielder was the *right* verdict, telling the PLZSoccer Football Show: ‘Regarding Power’s challenge it’s one of those ones. Do I honestly think he meant to go in and hurt Ryan Jack? I honestly don’t.

‘I think a booking was enough. I know it looked a bit of a nasty challenge but, for me, I don’t think he has gone in there to try and boot him in the face.

‘I think a yellow card is sufficient.’

A hearing for Hibernian’s Darnell Johnson *did* go ahead and the defender will sit out games against Hamilton and Dundee after his appeal against suspension for a challenge on Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre was dismissed.

St Mirren full-back Paul McGinn has also escaped retrospective punishment for a dangerous elbow on Dundee United’s Cammy Smith during Saturday’s Scottish Cup defeat in Paisley.

Saints boss Oran Kearney admitted he would have had no complaints if McGinn’s yellow card had been upgraded to a red after conceding the incident ‘didn’t look good’.

Echoing a growing view that the compliance officer is now creating miscarriages of justice rather than fixing them, former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae took to Twitter to brand the system a ‘free for all’ before calling for an overhaul.

‘No further action to be taken against Alan Power, who boots a player on the head endangering his safety,’ said Rae.

‘Paul McGinn smashes a player with his arm and also endangers his safety. This system needs a serious overhaul, it’s a free for all and lacks consistency.’

BT Sport pundit and former Celtic striker Chris Sutton tweeted: ‘Scotland the only country in world football where you can kick someone in head and elbow someone deliberately in most people’s eyes and get let off… the compliance officer needs a compliance officer.’

Ugly legal dispute threatens to engulf ownership of Swansea

Ugly legal dispute threatens to engulf ownership of Swansea and plunge the club into further off-field chaos

  • Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins recently resigned after 17 years in the role
  • Club is seeking stability after a turbulent end to the January transfer window
  • Behind the scenes a row continues over 2016 takeover that saw shares sold to Americans Jason Levein and Steve Kaplan
  • Swansea’s Supporters Trust claim they were excluded from negotiations

Simon Jones for MailOnline

An ugly legal dispute is threatening to engulf the ownership of Swansea City, sending the club into further off-field chaos.

The Championship club is seeking stability after a turbulent end to the January transfer window that saw chairman Huw Jenkins resign after 17 years in the role.

Yet behind the scenes, a row continues to rumble over the initial takeover of 2016 that saw shares sold to Americans Jason Levein and Steve Kaplan who took a controlling 68 per cent. The Supporters Trust claim they were excluded from negotiations, in contravention of a what they claim is a shareholders agreement.

The Trust have made public protestations that they wanted all parties to attend mediation in order to avoid going to court over the dispute and a date was set for this month, however, Sportsmail now understands that the Trust have for the second time, unilaterally at the last minute, withdrawn from the mediation.

A statement issued by lawyers acting on behalf of club shareholders said: ‘We act on behalf of the Swansea City shareholders who sold the majority of their shares in the Club in 2016; notwithstanding four of those still have a significant interest in the club.

‘We are surprised and extremely disappointed to have received notification from the Swansea Supporters Trust’s lawyers today that neither they nor the Trust wish to attend the mediation which had previously been proposed to take place later this month.

‘Dates for the mediation had been agreed with the Trust and we had full authority from all of our clients to attend the mediation and resolve the dispute that exists between the parties.

‘The Trust’s representatives have now however notified us that they will not be attending the mediation despite this being very much at odds with what the Trust have conveyed to the public in recent statements about their willingness to mediate. This may have significant costs consequences for the Trust in any future litigation especially as the Trust has previously failed to mediate in December 2018.

‘The selling shareholders are strong in their belief that they are in no way liable to the Trust for the circumstances surrounding the sale of their shares but continue to be saddened that the issues between them and the Trust remain unresolved and the club tragically continues to be damaged in the process.’

The Supporters Trust said they had sought mediation in relation to the 2016 takeover – from which they have always said they were excluded until the deal was at an advanced stage in contravention of a shareholders’ agreement – as well as a proposed sale of some of their shares to the Americans, which was shelved in January of this year.

Legal action over the takeover remains a possibility, but mediation was seen as an attempt to resolve the dispute without the need for formal court proceedings and help the club move forward from a period of division and anger.

Birmingham 0-1 Bolton: Callum Connolly makes the most of lenient refereeing in unlikely victory

  • A Callum Connolly header earned Bolton their first away win since August
  • Connolly was booked for only one of two late challenges before finding the net
  • Wanderers recorded their first win in eight Championship matches
  • Blues missed the opportunity to move within two points of the play-offs

Dave Clark, Press Association

Callum Connolly made the most of some lenient refereeing to fire struggling Bolton to 1-0 victory against Birmingham at St Andrew’s.

Wanderers recorded their first win in eight Sky Bet Championship outings after the 21-year-old was shown a yellow card for only one of two late challenges in as many second-half minutes, before heading the only goal of the game moments later.

A dreary contest was short of both quality and chances but the visitors were deservedly rewarded for a gutsy and disciplined display.

The hosts were unchanged from their dramatic 4-3 victory at QPR on Saturday, while Bolton made three changes from the side that suffered a fifth defeat in six league outings against Preston, with Mark Beevers returning from injury and Pawel Olkowski and Clayton Donaldson recalled.

Lukas Jutkiewicz fired the first shot of note straight at Bolton goalkeeper Remi Matthews after 13 minutes, and seven minutes later Blues midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld blazed a 25-yard effort narrowly wide.

Bolton front two Donaldson and Josh Magennis made a nuisance of themselves from a long ball in the 36th minute and Craig Noone’s shot from the edge of the box had to be smartly saved by Lee Camp before the former Cardiff man curled a follow-up effort wide.

Che Adams found Jutkiewicz with a fine cross six minutes before the break, but the 28-year-old could only deflect the ball onto the roof of the net as he stretched to make contact.

The hosts might have gone ahead in first-half stoppage time, but Gary Gardner lacked composure when the ball fell to him on the edge of the area and his effort was well off target.

David Wheater’s header down from a Luke Murphy corner after the break caused chaos in the hosts’ defence, with the ball eventually scrambled behind, while Marc Wilson headed wide from Murphy’s next set-piece.

Birmingham should have gone ahead after 62 minutes when the lively Adams found Jota in space on the right of the penalty area, but Matthews brilliantly deflected his shot against the woodwork.

Referee Andy Davies decided against booking Connolly for a late challenge on Kerim Mrabti midway through the second half but did reach for a yellow card two minutes later when the Everton loanee fouled Wes Harding.

Bolton made the breakthrough in the 71st minute when Donaldson – who was a menace against his former club throughout – won a free-kick on the right and Connolly headed Murphy’s delivery past Camp.

Gardner fired a free-kick over the bar as the hosts sought a quick response and Matthews turned Adams’ stoppage-time effort behind, with the Blues failing to turn a late spell of dominance into an equaliser as their play-off hopes were dealt a blow.
