Gordon Elliott reveals star novice Samcro could still run at Cheltenham after recovering from lung infection

  • The seven-year-old was expected to challenge for Champion Hurdle crown
  • But Samco failed to meet those lofty expectations in three runs this season
  • Trainer Elliott has hinted the seven-year-old could run again this season

Sportsmail Reporter

Samcro may yet complete a remarkable recovery in time to race at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.

The seven-year-old, a star even of the all-powerful axis of Gordon Elliott’s stable and Gigginstown ownership roster, began this season with high hopes of a challenge to Buveur D’Air’s Champion Hurdle crown after his outstanding novice campaign.

Samcro failed to meet those lofty expectations in three runs – including when a well-beaten second to dual champion Buveur D’Air in Newcastle’s Grade One BetVictor Fighting Fifth Hurdle – and after his most recent defeat at Leopardstown over Christmas, owners’ spokesman Eddie O’Leary announced a ‘very, very deep lung infection’ had been discovered.

Elliott, however, has dispelled the assumptions of many that Samcro may well not be seen on the racecourse again until next season – suggesting that he may yet take up an entry at Cheltenham next month, and if not possibly Aintree or Punchestown later in the spring.

‘Touch wood, he’s very good. He’s back in full work,’ the top Irish trainer told Sky Sports Racing.

‘He’ll do a bit of work at the end of this week, and we’ll see where we’re going. But I’m very happy with him.’

Asked if he is therefore not ruling out the possibility of Samcro returning to the Festival, a year after winning the Grade One Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle there, Elliott said: ‘Definitely not.

‘We kept him in all the races at Cheltenham. Obviously, he’s in the Champion and still in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.’

Elliott and the same owners’ brilliant mare Apple’s Jade has emerged as their number one Champion Hurdle contender.

But speaking about a Festival challenge of some sort for Samcro, the trainer added: ‘It’s not a definite no-no at the moment – we’ll see how the next couple of weeks go. But if not, we’ve got the Aintree Hurdle and Punchestown.

‘The next 10 days will tell us.

‘We’ve no target for him yet, but I’ve a couple of little things in my head – and I’ll see how the next couple of weeks go.’

Manchester United boss Solskjaer says Sanchez ‘needs to find himself’ after display against PSG

‘I can’t do anything about Alexis Sanchez’: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United winger ‘needs to find himself’ after another ineffective display against Paris Saint-Germain

  • Sanchez replaced the injured Jesse Lingard just before half-time on Tuesday
  • He was largely ineffective as PSG scored twice within 15 minutes of the restart
  • The Chilean has struggled with injuries and form since joining from Arsenal

Sportsmail Reporter

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he did not have the answer to Alexis Sanchez‘s struggles at Manchester United after the winger failed to make an impact against Paris Saint-Germain.

Sanchez replaced the injured Jesse Lingard just before half-time on Tuesday night but the Chilean was largely ineffective as PSG scored twice within 15 minutes of the restart at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer has inspired an upturn in form for several United players since he was installed as caretaker coach on December 19 but the former Arsenal man is still struggling to find his best form.

The 30-year-old has only made three starts under Solskjaer amid injury issues and a lack of form.

Sanchez may start the FA Cup fifth round tie at Chelsea on Monday if Martial and Lingard fail to recover but Solskjaer insists he is powerless to improve him.

‘I can’t do anything about Alexis Sanchez,’ Solskjaer said. ‘When he plays he needs to find himself because we know there’s a quality player there.’

Solskjaer admitted PSG’s 2-0 victory provided a ‘reality check’ for United, who had not lost since Jose Mourinho’s last match in charge at Liverpool on December 16.

He said: ‘Today we weren’t at their level. This is a level up from what we’ve played against, the games we’ve had. We had a great run.

‘We came into the game in a great frame of mind and great form but of course it was a big step up.

‘They have quality from the ‘keeper to the striker. There is a reason why they are favourites for the Champions League. That’s the level we need to aim for. ‘

Bong has been targeted by some Burnley fans since accusing West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez of racially abusing him during a Premier League game last year, leading to an FA charge for the striker.

The FA declared the charge to be ‘not proven’ against Rodriguez, who began his career at Burnley.

Bong was also targeted by West Brom fans during Brighton’s FA Cup victory at the Hawthorns last week.

Angel Di Maria’s night of redemption: PSG winger stars on hostile return to Old Trafford

0

[ad_1]

‘They didn’t let me have my best time there,’ said Angel Di Maria in a recent interview about his time at Old Trafford.

Di Maria is considered a flop in the eyes of United fans. The winger signed for £59.7million from Real Madrid in 2014 and largely did nothing during his one year at United before he moved to Paris Saint-Germain.

So, Tuesday night was his chance to make a statement. After all, he had barely been mentioned in the build-up.

The talk had centred on how PSG would do without Neymar or Edinson Cavani. Kylian Mbappe entered the conversation due to being fit yet no airtime for Di Maria.

It was only when he was booed walking into the ground that he became a topic of interest for Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves and Paul Ince in the BT Sport studio.

It was a mistake. The 30-year-old had scored in his last two Ligue 1 games and understands PSG’s philosophy of fast, attacking football.

His boss, Thomas Tuchel, had alluded to it in his pre-match press conference.

‘Obviously we’re going to be missing a couple of key attackers, but you don’t change your identity for that reason,’ Tuchel said.

Di Maria was positioned on the left with the expectation of his manager to get forward in a flash and be able to support Mbappe, who was playing in front of Julian Draxler.

He kept making run after run after run but the passes forward weren’t finding him. Each one sloppy, under-hit or not to his feet.

In the end, he did the work himself when the ball became loose just inside the left touchline.

He chased after it, took a touch and then took a hit from United captain Ashley Young, which sent him into the pitchside barriers.

It is a steep drop from the pitch to the advertising boards at Old Trafford and Di Maria felt the full force of Young’s rash and out-of-control challenge.

Maybe it was at that point, after being sent to the ground and receiving insults from the home supporters, that he felt enough was enough.

You could almost imagine Tuchel in the visiting dressing room at half-time, telling Di Maria to use the bumps and the taunts as his driving force for what would become a memorable second half.

A second half in which he would remind those same United supporters of his qualities when played in an appropriate system.

The sort of system Tuchel made him appear instrumental in during the second half at Old Trafford.

He was now on a revenge mission and wasn’t going to stop until he had done what he needed to do.

PSG’s first goal, the one that led to such a fractious reception thereafter, was created by Di Maria.

It was from his corner on the right side, which he swung in with his left foot, that PSG profited.

Central defender Presnel Kimpembe moved quickest to the in swinger and connected with his left foot at the back post, sending the ball past goalkeeper David De Gea.

It was only then, though, that Di Maria could really vent. He joined in the celebrations and then turned his attention to the United supporters.

Thiago Silva, clearly aware of the tension between player and supporters, tried to move his team-mate on but Di Maria wasn’t moving before his message was heard.

‘F**k off! Puta! [Spanish for b***h]. Fuck off!’ he appeared to shout while looking towards those in the East Stand.

An unnecessary reaction, perhaps, but you could understand how he had reached a point of no return.

Of course, the abuse only got worse. In the corner that joins the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the East Stand, more fans had waited for a chance to shout and swear at the winger.

This time a bottle was thrown towards him – an act no doubt UEFA and the club will choose to investigate further.

He saw the funny side given it didn’t hit him and blew into the bottle before placing it away from the pitch.

But if this was a night of statements, a night of taunts or mindless behaviour then Di Maria’s final intervention is how it should be remembered.

He controlled the ball on the far left side and drove towards the corner where just minutes before he was jeered.

Mbappe had started to make a clever run into the box. Di Maria saw him but chose to dribble further forward. Young was now in his way but Di Maria simply dropped his right shoulder and caressed the ball towards the six-yard box.

United’s central defensive pairing of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof both saw Mbappe coming but couldn’t stop him as he got between both of the to slide the ball underneath De Gea.

A classic fist pump was enough for Di Maria this time, who was no doubt by now confident that he had finally made his mark in an arena that so often had previously been the cause of personal annoyance and exasperation.

He came off to applause from the visiting supporters and rightly so. His involvement may well prove decisive in the outcome of this Champions League last-16 tie.

Hommage à Sala : une minute de silence avant les matchs de Coupes d’Europe

[ad_1]

Photo by LOIC VENANCE / AFP)
