Jurgen Klopp to discover whether he faces touchline ban for accusing referee Kevin Friend of bias as Liverpool boss is left with looming defensive crisis ahead of Bayern Munich clash

  • Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is set to discover whether will face a touchline ban
  • Klopp accused referee Kevin Friend of bias following draw with West Ham
  • Reds are facing a central-defensive crisis ahead of game against Bayern Munich
  • Klopp may have to field Joel Matip and Fabinho at the heart of the defence

Jeorge Bird For Mailonline

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is set to find out whether he will face a touchline ban for accusing referee Kevin Friend of bias.

Klopp was livid with Friend’s display in Liverpool 1-1 draw with West Ham last week as he claimed that the referee was biased towards The Hammers in the second half to make up for Liverpool’s first-half goal, scored by Sadio Mane, being offside.

As reported by The Sun, Klopp said: “I heard our goal was offside, I’m pretty sure the ref knew that in the second half.

“In 50-50 situations or 60-40 it was always a free-kick for the other team, which was hard and did not make life easy.”

Following his comments, Klopp was contacted by the FA, with the Liverpool boss having until Friday to explain his actions.

Given that Klopp didn’t ask for an extension, the FA must decide by Wedneday whether to charge Klopp with misconduct for implying bias or attacking the integrity of the official.

Meanwhile, Klopp is facing a defensive crisis ahead of next week’s Champions League clash at home to Bayern Munich.

Virgil van Dijk is suspended for the first leg of the last-16 tie, while Dejan Lovren faces a battle to be fit as he struggles with a thigh injury.

As reported by The Mirror, Klopp may have to deploy Joel Matip and Fabinho at centre-back against Bayern.

Fabinho has been struggling with a muscular problem but should be fine to feature.

However, there is some positive news for Liverpool on the injury front, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back in training with the squad following his injury nightmare.

The England international hasn’t played since April 2018 because of a serious knee injury.

‘Don’t be afraid – we’re good’: Kylian Mbappe urges critics not to doubt Paris Saint-Germain

‘Don’t be afraid – we’re good’: Kylian Mbappe urges critics not to doubt depleted Paris Saint-Germain despite absence of star names Edinson Cavani and Neymar

  • Paris Saint-Germain will take a two-goal lead back to Old Trafford on March 6
  • Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe scored crucial away goals for PSG
  • The French champions triumphed without Edinson Cavani or Neymar
  • Mbappe urged critics not to doubt the club’s ability despite their absentees

Peter Rutzler For Mailonline

Kylian Mbappe has urged critics of Paris Saint-Germain not to doubt the club after their impressive 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

French superstar Mbappe, who signed from Monaco for a reported £166million, scored PSG’s second goal of the night after defender Presnel Kimpembe had given the Ligue 1 side the lead.

Despite missing star names Edinson Cavani and Neymar, the French champions held their own at Old Trafford and will now take a comfortable two-goal cushion back to Paris for the return leg on March 6.

And Mbappe, speaking to French radio station RMC, urged those who questioned the club’s ability to perform without two of their famous front three not to doubt the team.

‘People have to stop selling fear and being afraid,’ said Mbappe.

‘Of course, Neymar is super-important and Cavani is fundamental, but football gets played on the pitch. We showed that tonight. Don’t be afraid: we’re good.’

Much was made before the game about the potential impact of the absence of Neymar and Cavani, especially considering a perceived lack of back-up options.

Coach Thomas Tuchel insisted the club were virtually on ‘Plan D’ due to injuries, but on the night it did not show as Angel Di Maria and Dani Alves excelled on either side of 20-year-old Mbappe.

Di Maria set up both goals, the first from a corner and the second with an incisive pass from the left flank, while Alves restrained Luke Shaw and also got Paul Pogba sent off late on for a second yellow card.

Despite scoring what could be a crucial second away goal, Mbappe was frustrated that he could not find a third that may have killed off the tie.

Mbappe was denied one-on-one by David De Gea after a swift counter-attack, but was unable to add further shine to an already stellar performance.

‘I could have scored goal number three, and I think that third goal would have finished the tie,’ Mbappe added.

‘But I’ll look to get one in the second leg.’

Defender Kimpembe also got on the scoresheet on 53 minutes – his first ever goal for the club after 83 appearances.

The 23-year-old also helped keep in-form forwards Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard quiet alongside an imperious Thiago Silva.

He revealed advice from coach Tuchel helped repel United’s strike force.

‘There is no secret to defending against their attack: Martial – Rashford – Lingard,’ Kimpembe told RMC.

‘They are great players, each match is different, but we knew how to work against them. The work of the coach made the difference.’

Children will hear Joe Root’s 12 words and realise homophobic abuse is unacceptable

0

[ad_1]

Above all else Joe Root did in this game, and he batted and captained brilliantly, nothing was as powerful as the words he spoke on the third afternoon: ‘Don’t use it as an insult, there’s nothing wrong with being gay.’

There were just a dozen of them, but they will have greater resonance in the long run than anything else. As England captain, he is a role model, a hero and kids hang on every word that passes his lips.

I am aware that ‘gay’ is bandied around as a derogatory term in school playgrounds and at lower levels of cricket around the UK.

As England captain Joe Root is a role model and kids hang on every word that passes his lips

It’s totally unacceptable. Hopefully young people will hear Joe’s words and realise it’s not a gag any more.

Like many others, I put rainbow laces on for a day every year to show my support for the LGBT community in sport.

While that gets the message out there, this message from a man of the status of England captain, playing to a global TV audience, is a much stronger one.

When someone like Root stands up, others will follow.

He did not respond to Shannon Gabriel as a PR stunt, or to seek attention. It was an off-the-cuff reaction to something that he was not prepared to accept. Quite simply, homophobic abuse should never be accepted.

I have no idea who said what to whom to trigger it. It has all been whispers and conjecture. Having the stump microphones on all the time should mean that you hear everything and everyone is kept in line.

Nothing Root did in St Lucia was as powerful as the words he spoke on day three

But on this occasion it hasn’t happened. The only thing they have picked up is Root’s comeback.

The shame about it is that there was a brilliant battle going on between a fine West Indies fast bowler and a fine England batsman. Lots of words were exchanged over a lengthy period of time and most of it was in jest and laughed off.

That is why I believe Joe was trying to back up Shannon when he spoke to the media on Monday evening.

Deep down, I believe both Root and Ben Stokes have enjoyed what from the context of the sporting contest has been a really good tussle against Gabriel during this tour of the Caribbean.

I would say that 99.9 per cent of what has gone on in the middle during the series has been fine — very watchable, cricket drama at its best, and we don’t want to be knocking that out of the game.

Lots of words were exchanged over a lengthy period and most of it was in jest and laughed off

We don’t want 11 characterless people taking the field, worried about what might be picked up by broadcasters.

After all, the whole point of sport, and the reason we all love it, is that it allows raw emotion to come out.

And don’t forget the circumstances aligned to the heat of battle. Here was a fast bowler who has continued to run in, giving it everything, when his team’s bowling attack is one man short due to an injury to Keemo Paul, and he has had catches dropped off him.

He has bowled quite brilliantly this series, he is in the faces of opposing batsmen and it has made for great theatre.

His mistake, if he did say the kind of thing to draw such a reaction, was to cross the line.

I don’t like seeing players banned because the best ones provide thrilling television and if Joe hadn’t reacted, no one would have picked up on this and thousands of England supporters would have gone home talking about the battles between Gabriel and Root, and Gabriel and Stokes.

Gabriel's mistake, if he did say the kind of thing to draw such a reaction, was to cross the line

Gabriel's mistake, if he did say the kind of thing to draw such a reaction, was to cross the line

Gabriel’s mistake, if he did say the kind of thing to draw such a reaction, was to cross the line

That is why I admire Joe for calling out Gabriel. He had a lot of respect, I sense, for how he was going about his business as a cricketer.

In his press gathering on Monday, he made a point of saying how much pride and passion he detected in him playing for West Indies.

But the moment he believed the line had been crossed, Joe stamped down on it.

If those 12 words can get to every school playground and every club game, that this has no place in cricket, it will be the best thing to come out of this Test.

It was a message delivered in a very calm, assured, non- histrionic way, to a worldwide audience. Homophobic abuse should not and will not be tolerated.

You could argue that if he was taking such a stand, he should have gone to the umpire and told him what was said.

This week has shown Joe Root to be a very special human being as well as a fine leader

This week has shown Joe Root to be a very special human being as well as a fine leader

This week has shown Joe Root to be a very special human being as well as a fine leader

But Joe’s loyalty to an opponent, I assume, stopped him doing that. I am sure Joe didn’t want to be seen as someone telling tales.

People have been suggesting it is a cultural thing. That those are the types of comments you get in this part of the world. That is not an excuse for me. Not in 2019.

The ICC clearly agreed and charged Gabriel with a breach of their code of conduct.

Root has done a lot of good things as a cricketer and his time as England captain has shown him to be a fine leader. This week has shown him to be a very special human being as well.

Référendums d’initiative citoyenne : l’exemple californien

0

[ad_1]
