Noemi Alphonse, a star in her own right…
At 24 years old, Noemi Alphonse is a professional racing athlete. What makes her stand out is that she is a wheelchair racing champion and has been making the country proud, at national and international level, with the number of races she has won.
For the Jeux des Îles de l'Océan Indien which took place last year in Mauritius, Noemi challenged the norms by being the first athlete with a disability to be Flag-bearer. However, her journey to success has not always been easy. “ While I have learned not to see my handicap as a limitation, two major events have previously marked me. When I was in 6th grade I had undergone an operation on my left foot. The rehabilitation process took one whole year pertaining to which I couldn’t go to school. However, with the help of my teachers and my mother I was able to prepare myself for the exams. My hard works paid off and I cleared the exam with good results. The second test I had to go through was when I was suspended by the Physically Handicapped Persons Sports Federation (PHYSFED). With the support of my coach, training friends and my close ones I was able to overcome this challenge.” These events allowed the young lady to never give up whatever obstruction may come her way.
This fierce fighting spirit came from her parents who showed her to continue the battle no matter what. “ My parents have always encouraged me in my endeavors and they have taught me to be mentally strong. Growing up, I did not see my handicap as a limitation. My childhood has been normal because of my parents who taught me to accept myself and not take into consideration the negative comments on my disability.”
My parents motivate me every day, when I feel low or discouraged, they boost up my moral by telling me all about my journey and what I have accomplished so far. My trainer also motivates me by advising me, encouraging me and watching motivational videos together. Sometimes I motivate myself by focusing on the changes on my body, by remembering my journey or by watching my performances. My biggest inspirations remain my parents, my trainer Jean Marie Bhugeersthee and my Grand-father.”
Noemi did not see her wheelchair as a limitation, but rather as a tool which made her win many races. Determined not to let herself be limited by any disability, the athlete won the 1500m race during the JIOI 2019, making each and everyone proud of her.
“Disability or not, as long as we set a goal and work hard, nothing can prevent us from fulfilling our dreams. The obstacles thrown in our way will determine how much we really want to achieve our goals. If we fall, we get up and continue our journey.”
