West Indies avoid the follow on but are dismissed for 197 after Stuart Broad records six-for as England fast bowler takes all four remaining wickets on the third day of the deciding third Test match at Old Trafford

  • Stuart Broad moved on to 497 Test wickets after taking four West Indies wickets
  • His wickets ensured West Indies were bowled out for 197 on day three of the Test
  • The visitors ensured they avoided the follow-on before Jason Holder fell
  • Rory Burns and Dom Sibley then pushed England’s lead on to 178 runs

Stuart Broad picked up figures of six for 31 and took all four remaining wickets as England bowled West Indies out for 197 in the first session of the third day in the deciding Test match.

The England fast bowler removed Jason Holder, Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach and Shane Dowrich to move on to 497 Test match wickets and give the hosts a lead of 172 going into their second innings at Old Trafford.

The visitors however avoided the follow-on thanks to a 68-run partnership between captain Holder and wicketkeeper Dowrich.

Rory Burns and Dom Sibley then ensured England went into lunch without losing a wicket and with six runs on the board to give them a lead of 178 runs.

West Indies began the day with Holder and Dowrich at the crease, and after a comfortable few overs the visiting captain received a reprieve.

Holder flicked a ball into the legside but Ollie Pope sprung to his right to complete a stunning grab, only for a no-ball to be called against Chris Woakes.

But after West Indies avoided the follow-on, Broad trapped Holder lbw before dismissing Rahkeem Cornwall in the same fashion when he was trying to play the ball into the leg-side.

Kemar Roach then departed without scoring after a good catch from captain Joe Root in the slips to give Broad his five wickets, before Dowrich’s battling innings came to an end when he skied the ball into Woakes’ hands.

The 20-minute period for Burns and Sibley before lunch passed without incident for the England openers, but Holder was forced to go off the field for treatment after suffering a problem with his hand after diving for a potential catch.
