UK Sport feel the heat over agreeing to supplement trial that was held during London 2012 Olympics

UK Sport insisted they will ‘never seek to win medals at any cost’ after it was revealed Olympians at London 2012 were used to trial an experimental supplement originally developed for US Special Forces.

An investigation by the Mail on Sunday found 91 elite athletes across eight sports were given an energy-boosting drink branded as DeltaG, which contained a synthetic version of naturally occurring body acid called ketones.

UK Sport adopted the project ahead of the 2012 Olympics and could not guarantee athletes that it wouldn’t breach anti-doping rules or that it was free of side-effects. The revelations have raised eyebrows within sport.

US star Kara Goucher, the 2007 world 10,000m silver medalist, tweeted: ‘I heard whispers of this years ago and told reporters. Interesting to see it all laid out. Win at all costs.’

But UK Sport denied that ethical boundaries had been crossed.

In a statement they said: ‘UK Sport does not fund research projects aimed at giving our national teams a performance advantage at the expense of athlete welfare.

‘UK Sport will never seek to win medals at any cost.’
