"Turning Point"

For the first time since this crisis began, Mauritius now has more people who have recovered from Covid19 than are still suffering from the virus. Not only have we flattened the curve, but it is also now definitely going down. That is huge!

Life under curfew is not easy. According to media reports, our island has endured one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. And yet, the people have managed. We have pulled together as a community, working for the greater good. As a result, Mauritius in one of the few countries of the world where infection numbers are falling.

We are not there yet, though. This virus is as aggressive as it ever was, and a vaccine is still a long way away. If we become overconfident now, we risk undoing all the hard work we have achieved since this crisis began. We still have at least two weeks of confinement left, during which time we must all play our part to make sure we not only reduce the levels of infection, but we irradiate the virus from Mauritius all together.

Like this fisherman (who I photographed before the lockdown began) we must continue to keep our distance from each other, for just a little while longer. If we do, we will beat this virus, and soon we will all be back on the streets, back on the beaches, and back on the ocean waves. There will be life after the lockdown, but we must still be vigilant for just a little while longer.

We have reached a turning point in our fight against the Coronavirus. Now let’s make sure we stay the course.

Well done, Mauritius.

Res lakaz!
