On Wednesday afternoon, Portuguese coach Mourinho revealed his frustration at not knowing whether the match would be going ahead on social media.

Fulham themselves were waiting in a London hotel ready to play the game but asked for a postponement after several of their squad tested positive for the virus.

The Premier League revealed that it had spoken to its medical advisers, who said the game should be called off ‘as a precaution and with the health of players and staff as the priority’.

After hearing the cancellation, a Spurs statement read: ‘The Premier League informed us of the decision this afternoon, with Fulham having requested the postponement on the grounds of the number of COVID-19 positive cases among their players and staff.

‘Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends their best wishes to Fulham for a safe and speedy recovery to all those who are affected.’

Fulham added: ‘This decision follows discussions with the Premier League and advice from Public Health England.

‘Those players and staff who tested positive have been self-isolating in line with UK Government and Premier League guidance. We wish the players and staff who tested positive a safe and speedy recovery.’

The Spurs match is the second Premier League game to have been called off due to coronavirus this week following Everton’s postponed match with Manchester City.

The Tuesday night clash at Goodison Park was called off after several positive cases emerged in Pep Guardiola’s side in the build-up to the match.

It is only the third top-flight game this season to be postponed due to the virus. Aston Villa’s match with Newcastle in November was called off after the Magpies had to shut down their training ground following their own spike in cases.

On Tuesday, the Premier League confirmed that there were 18 new positive Covid-19 tests among players and staff, the highest weekly total since Project Restart.

The latest round of testing saw 1,479 players and staff tested and the results show a sharp increase on last week’s total.

Sheffield United announced on Tuesday that they had a number of cases in their squad ahead of Tuesday’s match with Burnley, but Chris Wilder’s side were allowed to play in the Turf Moor encounter.
