Ronald Koeman ducks questions about European Super League with Barcelona one of two teams yet to withdraw from breakaway… but says he agrees with Gerard Pique’s protest tweet that ‘football belongs to the fans’

  • The European Super League proposal came crashing down on Tuesday night
  • The Premier League Big Six and three other sides have pulled out of plans
  • Only Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona remain part of the breakaway league
  • But Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman offered little on his thoughts of the league

Ronald Koeman chose to dodge questions about Barcelona‘s involvement in the controversial proposals for a European Super League.

The breakaway project crashed to the ground on Tuesday night as the Premier League ‘Big Six’ – Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham – all withdrew just 48 hours after announcing plans to be a founding member.

The English sides have since been joined by Atletico Madrid and Serie A duo Inter Milan and AC Milan in pulling out of the Super League, leaving Juventus, Real Madrid and the Catalan side as the only remaining members of the proposed competition.

But when asked about the Super League their home LaLiga fixture against Getafe on Thursday, Koeman admitted things had changed since club president Joan Laporta spoke to him on Tuesday, but stated he does not know what the future holds.

‘I talked about the Super League with the president yesterday, and he explained the club’s stance to me,’ Koeman said.

‘But there has been so much movement since yesterday that it is best not to comment, so many things can happen that it is better to wait. I want the best for the club.’

But when the question was put to him if he liked the idea of a Super League, he simply replied: ‘I am not going to answer any more questions on the Super League.’

Pushed once again on his own opinion, he stated: ‘I don’t want to speak a lot about this issue but I am in agreement with Pique’s tweet.’

The Dutchman was referring to a tweet from the centre-back following the news of the English clubs withdrawing, which stated: ‘Football belongs to the fans. Today more than ever.’

Koeman also added that he did not know if the players had been spoken to about the proposals after the announcement, but insisted he is not interested in whether they were consulted or not given that his side are in action tomorrow.

However, the 58-year-old dismissed suggestions his players could be distracted by Super League talk given that the club are yet to pull out.

‘Players want to win titles,’ he added. ‘I don’t doubt my players, we’ll be fine in tomorrow’s game.’
