Republic of Mauritius- The Motor Vehicle Licence online system and major projects in the land transport sector discussed

GIS– 02 May, 2019: The implementation of the second phase of the Motor Vehicle Licence (MVL) online system including the renewal of contracts for taxis, cars and buses by the end of 2019, as well as major ongoing projects in the land transport sector, were the main topics discussed on Tuesday 30 April 2019 during a press conference in Cassis.

The Road Transport Commissioner at the National Transport Authority (NTA), Dr Koshik Reesaul, who was addressing the press on that occasion, also highlighted the key role and functions of the organisation which is a service-oriented department falling under the aegis of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport.

 

The NTA’s website, indicated Dr Reesaul, has been revitalised and contains information that citizens might need with regards to the services offered by the organisation as well as procedures pertaining to registration, licensing and vehicle examination.  The NTA, he said, is also in contact with postal offices for proper linking within the MVL online system.

 

Speaking about the compliance of buses on the roads, the Road Transport Commissioner pointed out that early morning verifications are being carried out to ensure that buses are abiding with security norms and are road worthy.  In addition, new passes are being given to conductors and drivers which comprise their pictures for easy identification, he stated.

 

As regards contraventions, Dr Reesaul recalled that some 9140 contraventions and prohibitions have been issued from January 2019 till date and some 224 licenses have been issued for petrol stations.

 

Moreover, the Road Transport Commissioner elaborated on other main ongoing projects in the land transport sector, namely: New format for taxi renewal permits with better security features; Creation of a new Registration Mark Unit; Bus cashless ticketing and provision of feeder buses in line with the Metro Express Project; Passenger Information System for 34 smart bus shelters by the end of August 2019; and, Master plan for future locations of petrol stations comprising of new procedures.
