Republic of Mauritius- Rehabilitation works of Cavendish Bridge to kick off in May 2020

The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr. Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, was also present on the occasion.

The project includes the widening of the Cavendish bridge as well as the construction of a new state-of-the-art bridge adjacent to the existing one, with the proper realignment of the road.  A twelve-meter-wide Reinforced Concrete (RC) deck supported on piles and driven through the existing bridge piers will also be built.

Following the degradation of the old bridge structure which poses various safety hazards to pedestrians, rehabilitation works will be undertaken to provide a safer and more secure pathway to them.

The Road Development Authority will carry out the following rehabilitation works: replacing existing wooden planks  by treated timber boards and installing  an anti-theft system; strengthen  the footway metal supports; repair the bridge expansion joints; fix spalled concrete on the bridge structure; upgrade all drainage inlets; repair  faulty luminaires and upgrade road furniture, among others.  

It is recalled that the Cavendish Bridge, the longest one in Mauritius, is classified as a potential heritage site by the National Heritage Fund.  The rehabilitation project hence aims at preserving this historical site as well as embellishing it in line with Government’s aim of making Mahebourg a tourist village.
