August 2019: The
visit of Pope Francis to Mauritius on 9 September 2019 will be a landmark event
for the country, said the Prime Minister, Minister of
Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister
of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, this afternoon,
during a press conference at the New Treasury Building, Port Louis, in the presence of Cardinal Maurice Piat and other personalities.
According to Mr Jugnauth, the visit of Pope
Francis will be a State visit, prepared with the collaboration of the Diocese
of Port Louis, and he expressed the wish that the population welcomes the Pope
with the same enthusiasm, brotherhood, unity and pomp that they showcased
during the recent hosting of the Indian Ocean Islands Games 2019 in the
country. The Papal visit, he stressed, is yet another key national event that
will further bond the population.
The Prime Minister pointed out
that several site visits are being organised to the places that the Pope will
visit in Mauritius. He expressed satisfaction as regards the repair and
embellishment works being undertaken in this context and which are expected to
be completed within the set time-frame.
Speaking of Government’s commitment towards this
event, Prime Minister Jugnauth underpinned that provision has been made in
Budget 2019-2020 to ensure a high-level security and for the smooth running of
the Papal visit.
Mr Jugnauth also announced that a Media Center
will be set up at Le Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel in Caudan Waterfront, Port
Louis, to cater for the needs of local and international press. A live telecast of the visit on international
level is also scheduled through Eurovision, he indicated, adding that the Mauritius
Broadcasting Corporation will be responsible for local live telecast.
For his part, Cardinal Piat stated that the Pope
is a messenger of peace adding that his visit to Mauritius is being awaited not
only by Christians but by all Mauritians. He highlighted that the Père Laval
pilgrimage that is normally carried out on 8 and 9 September, will be preponed
to 7 and 8 September 2019 so as to ensure that the visit of Pope Francis on 9
September 2019, takes place in the best conditions possible.
