It was a case of same old, same old, for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s misery was compounded by yet another defeat to former club Everton at Goodison Park.

Roy Keane wryly joked that Arsenal would survive a relegation scrap, but the Gunners are hovering ever nearer to the drop zone as pressure grows on Arteta.

Meanwhile, Everton extended their good form with a third win on the spin as Carlo Ancelotti’s revolution continued on Saturday evening. Here, Sportsmail rates the performances from both sides.

Everton (4-2-3-1)

Jordan Pickford – 5

Failed to catch a Willian cross which led to Luiz hitting the post, hardly filling his defence with confidence at the moment but made a good last-gasp stop.

Mason Holgate – 7

Youngster is growing in stature and had the better of his duel with Willian, showing an old head on young shoulders against the veteran.

Yerry Mina – 7

Magnificent header to restore Everton’s lead and was equally commanding in the air in his own box.

Michael Keane – 7

A 35-yard strike whistled past the Gunners goal early on after he was given way too much space. Read the game superbly in defence.

Ben Godfrey – 6

Some shaky moments against the lively Pepe and made some unforced errors when in possession but looked better as the game wore on.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 8

Intelligent, skilful and strong, he was comfortable in possession, repeatedly playing himself out of trouble.

Tom Davies – 5

Had been doing a good job of tidying up danger in his own area until his lack of concentration saw him concede the equalising penalty.

Alex Iwobi – 7

Looked sharp against his old club with a long-busting series of runs and promising crosses, one of which led to the opener.

Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6

Wasted a fantastic free-kick by slamming straight into the wall but his corner delivery for the second was sublime.

Richarlison – 6

Quiet by his standards and showed some poor decisions making, in attack and defence.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 9

Great run and header led to the opener and unleashed a special shot late in the first half which was only kept out by Leno’s world-class save.

Subs (not used) Olsen, Lossl, Nkounkou, Bernard, Gordon, Branthwaite.

Arsenal (4-3-3)

Bernd Leno – 6

Made a great save from Calvert-Lewin late in the first half, leading to the corner for Everton’s second which he could only help into his net.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 8

His cross caused problems in the Everton box and his committed follow-up won a penalty as he was tripped by Davies.

Rob Holding – 5

Knew nothing about the opening goal as it deflected in off him and struggled with the pace and power of Calvert-Lewin.

David Luiz – 6

Unlucky with a shot that hit the post but emerged with some credit as he tried to hold together his defence under increasing Everton pressure.

Kieran Tierney – 5

Booked for a trip on Calvert-Lewin on the edge of his box and struggled with Everton’s bright attackers all night.

Dani Ceballos – 6

Grafted as last line of defence in front of his back four and tried to urge his team mates forward but there were too many poor displays around him.

Bukayo Saka was another non-factor in another poor showing for the north London side

Mohamed Elneny – 5

Anonymous in midfield, gave the ball away consistently and was the obvious first man to be replaced as Arteta went chasing the game.

Bukayo Saka – 5

Another non-factor in another poor Arsenal showing with his one major contribution a terrible wayward direct shot that wasted a free-kick.

Nicolas Pepe – 7

Took his penalty well and the most dangerous of Arsenal’s forwards, giving youngster Godfrey a tough time.

Eddie Nketiah was handed the starting role up front but failed to take his chance on Saturday

Eddie Nketiah – 6

Missed a good chance in the first half and was shrugged off the ball too easily too often by Everton’s experienced central defenders.

Willian – 6

Restored to the starting line-up and improved after a slow first half. His cross, dropped by Pickford, almost produced the equaliser.

Subs

Joe Willock (for Elneny, 64) – 5

Gabriel Martinelli (for Pepe, 71) – 5

Alexandre Lacazette (for Nketiah, 76) – 5

Subs (not used) Runarsson, Bellerin, Soares, Mustafi, Kolasinac, Smith Rowe.
