Pep Guardiola claims Liverpool are STILL IN the title race, but admits rivals are ‘not as clinical as they were’ after Jurgen Klopp’s champions slipped 13 points behind leaders with late collapse at Leicester

  • Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool’s Premier League title defence is over
  • The Liverpool manager said he doesn’t think his side can catch Manchester City
  • But Pep Guardiola believes Liverpool are still capable of contending for the title
  • He believes this despite being 13 points ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand

Pep Guardiola is adamant that Liverpool are still in the Premier League title race despite the fact Manchester City are sitting 13 points ahead with a game in hand.

Liverpool’s hope of defending their position as Premier League champions appears to be in tatters as they conceded three goals in the space of seven minutes during their 3-1 loss to Leicester City on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp even admitted that Liverpool’s title run could be over after they suffered their sixth league defeat of the season.

Speaking after Liverpool’s dramatic second-half collapse to Leicester, Klopp said: ‘Yes, I’m conceding. I don’t think we can close the gap. We are not worrying about the title, we are not silly.’

However, Guardiola is taking nothing for granted despite beating Tottenham 3-0 to move 13 points clear of their rivals.

He said: ‘From what I saw from the way they played against Leicester, we would have to lose games, but of course they can do it.

‘It is the same Liverpool that I met in the last years. In the boxes they are not as clinical as before but the quality of their play is still there.’

Guardiola also admitted his delight with his players after they dominated against Tottenham.

He said: ‘It was well deserved. The way we wanted to play, the approach, was there.

‘Tottenham have a special quality and when we have played them in the last two or three years away at Tottenham we played good, created a lot of chances, and they had two or three chances and we lost 2-0.

‘So they don’t need anything to create chances. This is down to their quality. But we have a special way to play and it doesn’t matter, this is how we’re going to play, but we must be patient, patient, patient.

‘The first five minutes they were better, then the first time we arrive we score, which sometimes happens, and we went on to control the game, so yes well deserved.’

Rodri opened the scoring from the penalty spot for City, however, it was Ilkay Gundogan who provided a second-half double.

Guardiola hailed Gundogan’s performance and claimed he could win player of the month again if he continues his good form.

He said: ‘I am more than delighted with his performance,’ said Guardiola. ‘He won the player of the month last month and if he keeps playing this way he is going to win it again.’
