Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson combined to score 49 points as the Golden State Warriors routed the San Antonio Spurs 141-102 on Wednesday night.

The prolific duo put the Spurs to the sword, with Durant posting 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds while Thompson hit 26 points as Warriors ran away in the second and third quarters to complete the victory.

The two-time defending champions scored 49 points on 16 assists  in the third quarter alone, making five of seven 3-pointers. They made 24 of 25 field goals in one blistering stretch spanning half-time – including 14 straight shots at one point.

Steph Curry wasn’t bad either: He had 19 points, seven assists, five rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Curry and company were so good the starters weren’t even needed for the final 12 minutes.

Durant and Thompson combined to shoot 20 for 26 in a matchup of the NBA’s top teams in 3-point shooting percentage – the Spurs on top at 40.5 to Golden State’s 38.6 going into Wednesday. Curry was 7 of 12 with three 3s.

Patty Mills scored 16 points with four 3s for San Antonio in the first game of a back-to-back.

The Spurs had their five-game winning streak snapped in a 127-112 loss at Sacramento on Monday, and coach Gregg Popovich rested LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan against Golden State.

‘No loads will be managed on our part,’ cracked Warriors coach Steve Kerr.

Durant made his first six shots and already had 15 points by the 4:28 mark of the opening quarter.

Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins scored 15 points in his eighth game since returning from a nearly year-long absence recovering from surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon.

Golden State started the second with a 9-0 run and then used an 11-0 burst over a 1-minute, 28-second span to help open a 66-52 halftime advantage.

The Warriors, who had used three different starting lineups in as many games before Wednesday, improved to 6-0 with the lineup of Curry, Cousins, Durant, Draymond Green and Thompson.

The Spurs began 10 for 15 and four of seven from deep before missing their next seven shots.

Golden State had lost the last two matchups with the Spurs, but won their third in a row at home in the series.

Mélanie rajoute : « Kan zot pe kapav telefone, pe tann zot lavwa, gayn zot nouvel. Me kan ou zanfan rakont ou an larm gran gran zom kouma zot finn gayn bate, zoure… li pa fasil pou aksepte sa ! »

Alfredo Morelos has four red cards this season and it could cost Rangers striker in future

0

[ad_1]

Maybe Alfredo Morelos is just like a bull to a red rag. After all, it is when he lines up against the red of Aberdeen that he is at his most aggressive.

The Rangers striker has been in fine goalscoring form. He even bagged twice at Pittodrie as Steven Gerrard’s side ran out 4-2 winners. But no one is discussing his brace on Thursday morning.

Instead, it is his fourth red card of the season that has people talking. Every good striker needs an edge. It is clear that Morelos’ is sharper than most.

He was dismissed in a double sending off alongside Scott McKenna. The two players came together. Morelos stamped on the Aberdeen man’s groin while McKenna kicked out at his face.

Incredibly, the Colombian has now managed to get sent off half as many times in his appearances for Rangers this campaign — four in 30 games — as Gerrard managed during his 710-game long Liverpool career.

There’s also something about Aberdeen where Morelos is concerned this season. Of his four red cards, three have come in clashes against the Dons. The other one was against Ufa in the Europa League, when he received two yellow cards.

Which means the only team Morelos has been sent off against domestically this campaign is Aberdeen.

It overshadowed the fact that Morelos had scored an excellent brace for the visitors

In the first Premiership game of the season, he was given a straight red at Pittodrie. And back at Ibrox, he was sent off for two bookable offences.

Bizarrely, Morelos has never been sent off before this campaign, which means it is a recent habit. He did, however, manage to collect 12 yellow cards last season.

The biggest issue for the 22-year-old is that Morelos dreams of playing in the Premier League. It is unlikely that many teams would take a punt on a hothead — especially given Rangers’ have rejected bids of £11million for the striker from China.

His manager is convinced that this could prove to be an issue as his career develops: ‘I think for Alfredo to go to the next level or to improve he will have to channel his aggression.

‘I’ll be honest, I haven’t had the chance to analyse the incident back so I can’t tell you if Scott deserved a red or whether Alfredo did.

‘But they’ve had a fantastic battle up until that point. Scott was physical with Alfredo, Alfredo was physical with them.

‘Two top players, but unfortunately they have both ended up with red cards. Whether they deserved it I’ll have to analyse it. If Alfredo is in the wrong then he’ll deserve the red card.

‘He’ll then be missing for two games and that’s how he’ll get punished because he hates missing games. But I’m doing everything in my power to help the kid grow as a footballer and as a person.

‘I’m not going to take the physical side away from him because he’ll get bullied out there against some strong physical players.’

Gerrard also suggested that Morelos’ fire can be a positive in November. Asked if Morelos reminded him of former team-mate Luis Suarez in terms of personality, the Rangers boss said: ‘He does actually. A lot.

‘We can change him, we can help in terms of his disciplinary record. He knows that.

‘But I love this type of player. I like players that play on the edge and sometimes get it wrong because these players are the ones that make the difference, they have got the X Factor. If you are a player and you don’t really play on the edge, you don’t make special things happen on a football pitch.

‘I loved playing with Suarez, he was my favourite player to play with. And I think I have already expressed how much I love Alfredo.’

Kenny Miller also warned back August that Morelos would be targeted by defenders who would look to take advantage of his temper.

‘He needs to be careful,’ he said. ‘You can target him. You can target him because that’s not a one-off incident.

‘You only need to look through the games last season to see the flashpoints that he was involved in.’

Still, Morelos does 15 goals this campaign despite missing an amount of football due to suspension. If any Premier League club is looking at him, they might be thinking he might be worth the risk.

After all, they’re unlikely to play Aberdeen any time soon.

‘Not good enough’: Tom Davies urges his Everton team-mates to bring an end to their set-piece misery

‘It’s not good enough’: Tom Davies urges his Everton team-mates to bring an end to their set-piece misery after Manchester City defeat

  • Tom Davies admitted Everton must improve at defending dead ball situations
  • Everton have conceded from 12 set-pieces this season, the highest in the league
  • The Toffees conceded from a set-piece for the second game in succession
  • They have now lost eight of their last 13 league matches, winning just three

Carl Markham, Press Association Sport

Everton midfielder Tom Davies accepts the team’s defending at set-pieces is not good enough and conceding ‘poor goals’ is killing any progress they make on the pitch.

In Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City at Goodison Park, the Toffees conceded yet another goal from a free-kick in first-half added time after denying the free-scoring Premier League champions a shot on target for the previous 45 minutes.

Everton now have the worst top-flight record when it comes to conceding from set-pieces (excluding penalties) as that was the 12th time in the league – and 17th in all competitions – they had been breached.

The goal killed the confidence Marco Silva’s side had built from an energetic and committed performance, with a second City goal, seven minutes into added-on time at the end of the match, adding to the frustration.

‘We were obviously gutted. It’s not good enough,’ said academy graduate Davies, captain on the night with Phil Jagielka injured and Seamus Coleman dropped to the bench.

‘We are disappointed with it, of course. That’s twice now in the last two games just before half-time.

‘If we keep it out and go in at half-time at 0-0 it’s a different game because we’d put in a good shift, as we did in the Wolves game (that Everton lost 3-1 on Saturday).

‘We are looking to work on it and we will be back for the next game and, hopefully, we can get that sorted.

‘All we can do is have a few games, a few set-plays, defending well and I am sure we will be more confident.

‘All the lads are gutted because we’ve done well enough in the game but it is just poor goals again.

‘Two-nil sounds comfortable but it was far from that.’

Everton have now lost eight of their last 13 league matches, winning just three, and keeping just two clean sheets since the start of December.

They have also only scored 15 goals – five of which came at Burnley on Boxing Day – during that spell.

Against City, Silva left out his top two scorers in Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson, with 10 and nine league goals respectively, as he changed formation to a 4-4-1-1.

It seems likely both will be recalled for an anticipated acrimonious return to his former club Watford at the weekend.

As well as stopping the set-piece goals, Silva also has to find a way of reproducing the work-rate displayed against City while still posing a threat as his side managed just one shot on target,

‘We will be working hard to try to sort that out and look to go to Watford and get the three points,’ added Davies.

‘It’s been a tough period for us really. In all aspects, we just haven’t been able to get the performances together as a team and a group.

‘Every day we’re trying to work on it and come up with solutions but it’s been hard.

‘We’ve had a close few games where, if decisions or goals had gone our way, we might have got ourselves out of it but nothing has fallen our way.

‘If we put in a similar performance (against Watford) we will cause them problems.’
