Manchester City apologise to Chelsea after playing Blues’ anthem ‘One Step Beyond’ following 6-0 drubbing

  • Manchester City played Chelsea anthem ‘One Step Beyond’ after their 6-0 win
  • It marked a humiliating end to a Sunday afternoon where they were taken apart
  • City officials apologised for the song being played and it was quickly cut short

Nathan Salt For Mailonline

Manchester City bosses apologised to Chelsea after the west London club’s anthem ‘One Step Beyond’ was played after their 6-0 drubbing on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola‘s side tore their opponent’s to pieces as they returned to the top of the Premier League table.

If the result alone was not hard enough for Chelsea fans to take, exiting the stadium to the sound of Madness’ ‘One Step Beyond’, a club anthem at Stamford Bridge, compounded the misery.

According to the Evening Standard, City officials demanded the song be cut short and were quick to say apologise to the visitors for what many perceived as an act of gloating.

The song is regularly played after Chelsea win matches at Stamford Bridge and so hearing it after a 6-0 demolition left a bitter taste.

It was swiftly cut short but fans quickly took to social media to hail the person in charge of City’s PA system.

WHY DO CHELSEA PLAY THE SONG?

‘One Step Beyond’ is a tune written by Jamaican ska singer Prince Buster as a B-side for his single ‘Al Capone’. It was made famous by London band Madness who covered it for their debut 1979 album of the same name.

In recent years the tune has been played at Stamford Bridge following high profile victories; particularly following second leg wins in the UEFA Champions League knock out stages or particularly significant league matches.

Ska music has been popular among much of Chelsea’s support since the 1960s, when the style was introduced from Jamaica.

Another ska tune, ‘The Liquidator’, was first played soon after release in the late 1960s, and is currently played as the teams enter the field at Stamford Bridge.

Madness are a band with a close association with Chelsea, with lead singer Graham ‘Suggs’ McPherson and drummer Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate both being long-time match-going fans.

One twitter user wrote: ‘City trolling Chelsea with One Step Beyond after stuffing them 6-0 was a lovely moment’.

An angry Chelsea supporter suggested if the song is played at Wembley, where the two sides meet in the Carabao Cup final on February 24, he will support Liverpool for the title.

He wrote: ‘If City play One Step Beyond if they beat us at Wembley I’m walking straight out of the stadium into a shop and buying a Liverpool shirt to support them for the rest of the season.’

The humiliation had started long before the Madness track rang through the speakers as Sergio Aguero collected his second successive hat-trick at the Etihad.

Aguero is in a rich vein of form right now and could have scored more with Chelsea unable to nullify his threat as City were 4-0 up after just 25 minutes.

Raheem Sterling scored the opener after four minutes, a sign that it was going to be a long afternoon for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Aguero made it 2-0 nine minutes later with a stunning strike from distance and pressure was mounting with every goal conceded on Sarri.

Ilkay Gundogan got in on the act as Guardiola’s side continued to keep the pressure on title rivals Liverpool following their win over Bournemouth at Anfield.

Chelsea now need to haul themselves off the canvas for Thursday’s trip to face Malmo in the Europa League before taking on an in-form Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Golden State 120-118 Miami Heat: Keven Durant inspires Warriors to dramatic win

Golden State 120-118 Miami Heat: DeMarcus Cousins scores two late free throws as Keven Durant inspires the Warriors to dramatic comeback win

  • The Golden State Warriors claimed a dramatic victory over the Miami Heat
  • Keven Durant scored 39 points to inspire the reigning NBA champions to the win
  • DeMarcus Cousins made two free throws with 5.4 seconds to play to seal things

Josh Dubow, Associated Press

A lacklustre start for Golden State turned into a frantic finish and another win thanks to a big shooting night from Keven Durant.

Durant hit a game-tying three-pointer in the final minute as part of a 39-point night and DeMarcus Cousins made two free throws with 5.4 seconds to play that helped the Warriors cap a comeback from a 19-point deficit in the first quarter to beat the Miami Heat 120-118 on Sunday.

‘We started off sluggish,’ Durant said. ‘They made shots, they were excited to play against us. We treated it like it was a Sunday walk in the park. … After a while we just locked in.’

Durant was a big reason why, scoring 11 straight points for Golden State down the stretch before finally missing a late three-pointer that Cousins corralled for a rebound and drew a foul on the put-back attempt that gave the Warriors their 11th double-digit comeback of the season, and second straight after rallying from 17 points down in the first quarter Friday in Phoenix.

The Heat were upset because they believed Durant double-dribbled before that late attempt and that there was a 28-8 free throw disparity in Golden State’s favor.

‘Those are tough calls to make, but everybody saw it. It’s right there in front of everybody,’ Heat coach Eric Spoelstra said of Durant losing the handle and starting to dribble again. ‘That should be a violation and you can’t miss those calls. But we had our chances, it was back and forth.’

Miami overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on a three-pointer by Justise Winslow. Josh Richardson and Dwyane Wade then had back-to-back steals and layups to put the Heat up 118-115 with 51.5 seconds to play.

Durant then tied it with a three-pointer and Cousins made his big shots after both teams missed from long range to give the Warriors their 15th win in 16 games.

‘I was really happy that he was out there at the end of the game,’ coach Steve Kerr said of Cousins, playing his 10th game for Golden State. ‘It’s good experiences for him because he hasn’t been out there much since he’s come back to close games.’

Klay Thompson scored 29 points and Stephen Curry added 25 for Golden State.

Richardson finished with a career-high 37 points with help from eight three-pointers. Waiters added 24 and Winslow had 22 in Miami’s fifth loss in six games.

‘No moral victories really in this game, but we played pretty well and we lost a close one,’ Winslow said. ‘Some things were out of our control, but the way we competed was what you like to see out of a team.’

The Heat went on a 24-2 run early in the first quarter and quickly built a 19-point lead against the slow-starting Warriors. But Golden State scored the final six points of the frame to cut the deficit to 10 points after one.

The Warriors went on a 12-0 run early in the third quarter starting with a three-pointer from Curry to take a 66-61 lead and the game stayed close from there.

[ad_1]
