Will Paul Scholes fare better than the other Class of ’92 members at coaching?

Paul Scholes will become the fifth Class of ’92 member to try his hand at management when Oldham Athletic unveil him as their new boss on Monday afternoon.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder has been itching to get back into the game and did speak to Oldham about taking over last season.

Sportsmail looks at how four of the others have fared in various coaching roles since retirement.

RYAN GIGGS

Wales manager Giggs has been in situ little over a year and the statement 4-1 win over Ireland in September was the obvious highlight.

The 45-year-old does have his critics though and they criticised his team selection after a chastening defeat against Albania two months later.

Giggs is adamant that blooding youngsters will provide Wales with a platform to compete in the future, admitting that his spell in charge has so far been a ‘work in progress’.

He is enthused by Bournemouth’s David Brooks and Ethan Ampadu of Chelsea, the latter having played only five more games for his club than country.

Giggs did not hold back after the Albania debacle however, labelling his players ‘complacent’. That, to his mind, skewed his opening nine matches as manager.

Five of those ended in defeats, although the others came against Spain, Uruguay and Denmark twice. The real test starts next month with the European Championship qualifiers. Given 55 teams will reach the 2020 showpiece, Giggs ought to make sure Wales are one of them.

This is a huge opportunity for the former winger, who had been in brief interim charge at Old Trafford and worked under both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

GARY NEVILLE

Just before acting as No 2 to Roy Hodgson for England’s disastrous Euro 2016 campaign, Neville lasted only four months at the helm in Valencia.

There had been ups and downs at England, with some reason for optimism despite three generally disappointing tournaments, but Valencia acted as a real wake-up call for the former United right back. Then came Iceland in France, probably signalling the end of his coaching career.

The top job at the Mestalla had looked a tough one from the outside beforehand but Neville believed he could make it work under friend and Salford co-owner Peter Lim.

Only three La Liga victories in 16 games suggested otherwise, Valencia slumping to within six points of the relegation zone and 20 behind the Champions League places.

A 7-0 Copa Del Rey defeat was described by sporting director, Suso Garcia Pitarch, as ‘one of the worst in our history’.

Neville, blighted by red cards, injuries and a lack of goals, wanted to continue in Spain but realised results – 10 wins from his 28 matches – simply were not good enough.

PHIL NEVILLE

Neville ended up working for three different Valencia managers during the season in which his older brother arrived and was then subsequently sacked.

He was initially appointed as a coach under Nuno Espirito Santo, who resigned in November, before assisting Gary and then staying on with Pako Ayestaran. Neville – whose son Harvey was in the Valencia academy at that point – left Spain at the end of the season.

The 42-year-old had taken charge of one Salford City game alongside Scholes in 2015 before landing the England Women’s job in January of last year.

Neville has won five of his eight games with the national team and believes England have the chance to lift silverware in the next two tournaments – this summer’s World Cup in France and Euro 2021 on home soil.

‘We want to do well and we want to inspire but the biggest way to inspire is to win World Cups, to win Olympic Games, to win European Championships,’ he said.

‘If we do that and people say I remember turning on and seeing Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton or Fran Kirby scoring the winning goal in a World Cup final then that’s the only way to inspire the next generation.’

NICKY BUTT

United’s academy have a number of exciting youngsters emerging right now and that has to partly be down to Butt.

He has held the head of academy role since 2016, following Brian McClair’s departure, and has been reshaping its structure.

Marcus Rashford, who made his senior debut a week after Butt’s appointment, cannot define his time. Yet the development of others thereafter could well do.

Nicky Butt has done an impressive job since becoming Manchester United’s head of academy

United were heavily criticised following last season’s relegation for Ricky Sbragia’s Under 23s but are placing more importance in the Under 18 team.

Kieran McKenna topped the northern division with them last year – eventually losing the final against Chelsea – before he was then promoted to the first team alongside Jose Mourinho.

Neil Ryan took his place with the Under 18s and is battling with Everton, Liverpool and Derby to reach that final again.

The likes of Mason Greenwood, James Garner and Ethan Laird are all drawing praise. Tahith Chong, the 19-year-old Dutchman, made his debut in the FA Cup against Reading last month and was among the travelling party to Fulham on Saturday.

Butt’s relationship with the first team is allowing some of the club’s brightest teenagers to star in training.

En Algérie, une fossilisation du pouvoir

Editorial.

Mohamed Salah vs Sergio Aguero: How do they compare in Golden Boot race?

Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero are level on 17 goals in Premier League Golden Boot race… but how do the pair compare on and off the pitch?

  • Mohamed Salah took his tally to 17 goals with a strike against Bournemouth
  • Sergio Aguero bagged a hat-trick against Chelsea to reach the same figure
  • Sportsmail has compared the two forwards over the course of the season

Amitai Winehouse For Mailonline

Sergio Aguero moved level with Mohamed Salah on 17 Premier League goals in Manchester City’s win against Chelsea.

Salah is the current holder of the Golden Boot and will be looking to retain it. He struck against Bournemouth on Saturday, while Aguero bagged a hat-trick in the game at the Etihad Stadium.

Sportsmail has taken a look at the two forwards and how they compare statistically, when they score, and how they each are off the pitch.

Goalscoring trend

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah did score on the opening day of the season and had three goals by the end of September, but struggled to really get going until mid-October, leading to doubts over his form. In December he really hit a run of form, scoring six Premier League goals. January saw three more.

Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero has been a consistent goalscorer throughout the season, although he did go through something a dry patch between the end of August and mid-September.

He has also been ruthless when he has scored, bagging three hat-tricks this campaign in the Premier League already.

Statistical comparison

Salah has played more football than Aguero in the Premier League this season, posting nearly 600 more minutes of action than his rival. In that time, he has taken three more shots but hit 11 more on target.

The Egyptian’s conversion rate is 19.5 per cent compared to Aguero’s 20.2 per cent, which is a minimal difference. They also have fairly comparable assists figures, Salah with seven compared to Aguero on six.

However, Salah posts a lower Expected Goals (xG) per 90 figure, at 0.63 to 0.77. Given the generally small figures involved in xG, that suggests Salah is doing better to put his chances away than Aguero, as the quality of them is slightly less.

Salah

Salah’s incredible popularity off the pitch, especially in Egypt, means he is the face for a number of advertising campaigns. He is involved in Pepsi’s new behind the scenes-style marketing push, while he has also helped with Adidas and DHL in recent months.

Aguero

Aguero is a notably quiet man off the pitch, as evidenced by his role in the Manchester City documentary. Still, he has been at the forefront of Puma’s new push in the football sphere, helping them launch new ranges.

The striker also changed his look up this season, dying his hair a platinum blond in November.

Frank Lampard is bookies’ favourite to become next permanent Chelsea boss as pressure grows on Maurizio Sarri after 6-0 defeat by Manchester City

  • The ex-Blues midfielder edges Zinedine Zidane and Gianfranco Zola in the odds

Nathan Salt For Mailonline

Former Chelsea captain Frank Lampard is the bookmakers’ favourite to become the next permanent Blues boss as pressure mounts on Maurizio Sarri.

Following Sunday’s 6-0 humiliation to title chasers Manchester City, Sarri’s position has been placed under further scrutiny.

Lampard has impressed so far this season with Derby County in the Championship in what is his first job as a manager since ending his illustrious playing career.

According to BetVictor, Lampard has been installed as 2/1 favourite, edging out three-time Champions League winner Zinedine Zidane, who is yet to return to ‘management since leaving Real Madrid.

Jose Mourinho, sacked by Manchester United in December, is out at 12/1 for a return to Chelsea for his third spell.

Impressive Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is with Portuguese compatriot Mourinho at 12/1 while World Cup-winning manager Didier Deschamps is at 16/1.

For Chelsea, their drubbing by City has seen them fall to sixth, denting ambitions of a top four finish.

Sarri was non-committal after the match when asked if his position is now in serious jeopardy.

‘You have to ask the club,’ Sarri said amid growing calls for his removal after a fourth defeat in eight games.

‘I’m worried about my team. I’m worried about the performance. My job is always at risk.’

Sarri was asked if he was expecting a call from owner Roman Abramovich, but the answer pointed towards the power structure at Chelsea.

‘If the president calls, I’ll be happy, seeing as I never hear from him,’ he said.

‘To be honest, I don’t know what to expect. I didn’t see my football. At the beginning of the season it worked. Now we need to understand the reasons why it isn’t working. It is not easy.’
