Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in bullish mood ahead of Manchester United’s first leg vs PSG

‘The squad is very capable of winning against anyone… I don’t think we could be in a better frame of mind:’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in bullish mood ahead of Man United’s first leg vs PSG

  • Manchester United face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16
  • The Red Devils host the French giants in the first leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday
  • United have won 10 and drawn one of their 11 games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
  • United’s interim manager is confident they can spring a surprise in Europe

Chris Wheeler for MailOnline

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United are capable of springing a surprise in the Champions League this season, and claims that his side could not be in better shape going into their last 16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Solskjaer has overseen 10 wins from 11 games since arriving on loan from Molde in December, raising hopes that United can win a tie that looked rather daunting when the draw was first made.

‘I’ve said to the boys if we keep working every single day in training, we can improve and maybe surprise a few people,’ said Solskjaer.

‘I think the squad is very capable of winning against any opponent when we go into games confident and in the form we are in. You can’t look too far ahead but we just need to make sure we go through this one and take each challenge as it comes.

‘I’ve loved every single min of it since I walked in the first day. We had a big challenge ahead of us, we were far behind in the league and confidence was low after the defeat against Liverpool, but they’ve responded fantastically. I don’t think we could be in a better frame of mind in (terms of) confidence, so we’re looking forward to the next few games coming up and especially this game against PSG.

‘When you get here you expect to win every game of football with the size of the club and the supporters we have, but you know you’re not going to win every single game. The players are still disappointed with the two points we dropped against Burnley and so am I.’

Solskjaer had no inkling he was going to get the job when he watched the draw at home in Norway with his son Noah. Now he is looking forward to a great European night at Old Trafford, admitting they have been few and far between in recent years.

‘Yeah, if you look back, maybe one of the last few exciting knockout games was Real Madrid when Nani was sent off,’ he added.

‘We had Bayern Munich a few years ago, so we’re looking forward to this, the supporters and the players. They’re special nights. My last was Roma when we beat them 7-1 – a typical Old Trafford night where we lost 2-1 away from home and the manager was so happy and confident we would win at home. So I just want my players to go into this game confident and raise their game.

‘I watched it (the draw) with Noah and said ‘wow, that’s a tough challenge!’. But we’ve given ourselves the best possible opportunity. If there was ever a chance to go into big games it’s now of course.’

Paul Scholes vows to play attacking football at Oldham after being left bored by Jose Mourinho

Paul Scholes has vowed to use his Manchester United contacts as he takes his first steps into management with boyhood club Oldham Athletic.

The Old Trafford legend has signed an 18-month deal to take over at the League Two outfit and admitted that he would be calling his old employers for advice – and players.

‘I’ll be trying to do that,’ said Scholes, who is understood to have been instrumental in a move for young United starlet Zak Dearnley, who scored on his Oldham debut on Saturday.

‘Zac has come in and scored his first goal,’ he added. ‘You need contacts at this level all over the place. Not just Man United.

‘I’m close to (academy boss) Nicky Butt and the people at united, if they can help me I’m sure they will.’

Scholes, who has stepped down as a director at Salford City but who will retain his 10% stake in the National League club, added he had received messages of support from his fellow owners and Class of ’92 members.

‘They’ve just wished me good luck,’ he said. ‘They just want me to do well, like they are in the jobs they’re doing – we all want each other to do well.’

Scholes takes over at Oldham after being linked with the club he supported as a boy a number of times previously.

‘I just feel ready, really,’ he said.

‘There’s been times in the past where it’s been an option but it didn’t feel right. I wanted my full coaching badges which I’ve got now.’

During a delay to his appointment, caused by the EFL investigating whether his role at Salford constituted a conflict of interest, Scholes, who won 20 major trophies with United, has been a keen spectator.

Oldham are currently 14th, nine points from the play-off places and 14 points away from the relegation zone.

They face Yeovil Town at Boundary Park tomorrow night. ‘I’ve watched the team closely,’ Scholes said.

‘I think they’re a good team, good players, it should be pushing for promotion. It might be out of reach this season but certainly next season.’

Scholes said he wanted to entertain Oldham’s fans with his brand of football: ‘I want my team to be aggressive and focused on winning first and foremost. I know it’s not going to happen every week, but I go into every game expecting to win.

‘I go into every game expecting my team to entertain, I want to be entertained on the side and plenty of fans want to be entertained and I’ll be thinking about scoring goals.’

Scholes lives in Oldham and is keen to revive the Premier League founder members who are playing in the fourth tier for the first time since 1971.

‘I have a lot of passion for this town,’ he said. ‘I live 15 minutes away from here. I know it’s been 20-30 years since there’s been excitement here. It’s always seemed to be fighting relegation. It’s been difficult. Like every other manager – I want to change it and I hope I can do that.’

When asked if he could return Oldham to a Premier League they left in 1994, Scholes was measured.

‘That’s not my target,’ he said.

‘My target is to beat Yeovil tomorrow night. That’s a long way away. You have to have that ambition. Fans will have that ambition. The town back then was brilliant, it was a great place to be. We want those times back again but there’s a long way to go. It will be difficult.’

Scholes, who spent his whole career at United, raised a smile when asked if he would struggle to translate his message to players who may not have his own ability.

‘I don’t know because I’ve not done it yet!’ he said.

‘It’s football isn’t it? I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t feel excited by the team. The basics apply at all levels. I’m excited about the team. I think there’s a team here capable of doing really well.

Scholes will be assisted by Mick Priest, who was a coach at United’s academy while Scholes was at Old Trafford. Priest has also worked in Israel and Norway and was formerly a first team coach at Fulham.

Oldham, relegated last season, sacked Frankie Bunn in December and academy coach Pete Wild has been in caretaker charge while the club looked for a new permanent manager.

Previous managers at the club are understood to have been hampered by boardroom interference, and Scholes is understood to have been assuranced that there will be no meddling from owner, Dubai-based Moroccan former agent Abdallah Lemsagam.

Lemsagam said: ‘Paul has won everything there is to win in football. He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.’

Sergio Aguero targets silverware over individual acclaim Man City this season

[ad_1]

‘I am happy for the hat-trick and to break records… but what matters to me is winning trophies,’ Sergio Aguero targets silverware over individual acclaim at Man City this season

  • Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City thumped Chelsea 6-0
  • The treble was a record-equalling 11th in the Premier League for the Argentine
  • However, Aguero’s focus is on helping City win the quadruple this season

Andy Hampson, Press Association Sport

Sergio Aguero insists his hunger for goals comes second to his desire to win trophies.

Manchester City’s irrepressible record goalscorer was close to his blistering best on Sunday as he bagged a hat-trick in the champions’ scintillating 6-0 thrashing of Chelsea.

The treble was his 11th in the Premier League, equalling the record of Alan Shearer, his second in three games and his 15th in City colours.

It also saw him become City’s leading scorer in league football with 160 goals, extending his overall tally for the club to 222 in the process.

Despite all the accolades, the Argentinian claims all that really matters is winning trophies and this emphatic victory took quadruple-chasing City back to the top of the Premier League.

Aguero said: ‘I am happy for the hat-trick and to break records in the Premier League and for the club.

‘I try to keep those good memories, and special thanks to my team-mates for helping me, but what matters most is winning.

‘I always try to play my game and help the team as best I can. My mentality is always to try to focus on my work and if it is with goals all the better.

‘What matters to me is finishing the season in the best way and winning trophies.’

City brushed aside a surprisingly poor Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, doing most of the damage in a whirlwind opening 25 minutes that yielded four goals.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring after four minutes, Aguero added a quickfire double and Ilkay Gundogan also got on the scoresheet. Aguero completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after the break and Sterling finished the rout late on.

Aguero’s afternoon could have been even more profitable as he missed a sitter in the early stages and later headed against the bar.

City now switch their attention to knockout football with games against Newport in the FA Cup, Schalke in the Champions League and Chelsea again in the Carabao Cup final before they are next in league action.

They do so having regained first place from Liverpool on goal difference. Their lead is a slender one, and they have played a game more, but the manner of their latest victory, which improved their goal difference advantage over the Reds to 10, was a powerful message.

Aguero will hope his personal accolades get outshone by City winning the quadruple this term

Joe Hayes (1953-65) 142 goals

Aguero said: ‘We had a good game. I think it might be one of the best performances of this team.

‘We had great games against United, Liverpool and Arsenal but I believe it was a very nice game and an even more important result.’

Reflecting on his remarkable miss in front of an open goal from two yards, which occurred when the score was 1-0, Aguero said: ‘Sometimes those things happen but the annoyment lasted for five seconds.

‘Then I need to carry on, think about the team and try to score goals. Luckily in the next play I managed to do that.’
