Malmo 1-2 Chelsea: Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud strike in Europa League win

As Chelsea supporters filtered into the Malmo squares in the early hours of Friday morning, the theme of the conversation would be quite clear. Did this result represent a blanket over the flames? Or is there life yet in the ailing reign of Maurizio Sarri?

For long periods of this fraught encounter, another team in blue and white promised to deepen the malaise inflicting Sarri.

After Manchester City’s balletic exhibition in Manchester, this was an altogether different experience for Chelsea but for a while, it threatened to be equally haunting. After a lesson in the beautiful game by Pep Guardiola’s side, along came Malmo. The Swedes are a hard-nosed, gritty, energetic team that asked rather different questions of Chelsea’s faculties.

Then in one glorious, sweeping move, Sarri’s vision came to life. Chelsea were already leading through a Ross Barkley goal but they were under the cosh and managing the match rather awkwardly.

The second, however, was Chelsea’s first truly fluid attack of the evening. It began with Sarri’s essential figure, Jorginho, who was harried in central midfield but he hoodwinked his opponents, threading a pass that broke the lines and saw Barkley running over halfway with menace. Barkley carried the ball purposefully, teed up Willian, who crossed low and Olivier Giroud turned in the crucial second.

Amid the latest bout of pressure overwhelming their manager, both the result and Chelsea’s second-half confidence and swagger seemed to be a statement. A level of belief has been restored ahead of matches against Manchester United in the FA Cup and Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final that will go a long way to defining Sarri’s reign.

Chairman Bruce Buck, who sat in on Sarri’s pre-match press conference, also took in a close-up pitch-side view of the players going through their warm-ups.

File this away, therefore, as a result urgently required for Sarri, particularly as in the first half, the home side challenged Chelsea’s resilience and the answers were not always convincing. Indeed, even when Chelsea looked safe, sound and sailing into the next round, angst crept into their play.

N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard were by now on the field as substitutes but with a 2-0 lead, suddenly the Chelsea defence parted and Anders Christiansen sped through to half the deficit and offer hope to the home crowd.

The Chelsea breakthrough, when it came in the 30th minute, actually represented their very first shot on target and Barkley seemed surprised as he initially stumbled when Pedro’s cross landed at his feet. The midfielder eventually settled himself and slipped the ball under the goalkeeper. Remarkably, Chelsea’s first away goal of the calendar year had arrived on Valentine’s Day.

Away from home, Chelsea had lost their past four matches in all competitions, conceding thirteen and failing to score. The beleaguered manager made five changes from the side that collapsed in Manchester, offering both a response to the defeat and an eye on Manchester United on Monday evening. Marcos Alonso was axed from the squad altogether and there were rests for Antonio Rudiger, N’Golo Kante, Eden Hazard and Gonzalo Higuain.

Despite the reshuffle, Callum Hudson-Odoi had to make do once more with a place on the bench. The teenager, told he could not join Bayern Munich in January and assured he would receive first-team football, came on in the 84th minute and has played only eighteen minutes since the transfer window closed.

After the opener, Chelsea should have asserted their authority. Yet instead the more compelling reaction came from Malmo. Anders Christiansen’s long-distance strike dipped over and Chelsea then rode their luck from set-pieces. As the ball flew back-and-forth across the six yard box, Soren Rieks and Markus Rosenberg both came close to an equaliser.

As Arsenal demonstrated earlier in the evening, there are no walkovers in the knockout stages of the European competition. In these less-vaunted parts of the continent, matches like this do not come along very often and Malmo responded to a real sense of occasion.

Their manager Uwe Rosler set the tie up with much bravado. The former Manchester City striker spoke of his joy at Chelsea’s 6-0 defeat and warned that the ‘stadium would be cooking’.

The locals did not disappoint. They bobbed up and down in the manner usually seen at Germany’s most lively stadiums, they ignited red flares and a misty smoke enveloped their sold-out home. When the match began, a sinister hiss greeted every Chelsea touch and exaggerated outrage met every decision that went against their team.

Chelsea, already facing a potential partial stadium closure due to alleged anti-Semitic chants earlier in the campaign, saw their supporters once again riled. The two sets of fans hurled beer back and forth during the first period and a line of Swedish police intervened at the fence separating the two fans as matters promised to escalate. On the final whistle, two home fans invaded the pitch and needed to be caught by stewards.

Chelsea are an experienced team and should not be intimidated by the cliched European welcome on the field, and yet they were certainly rattled. During a fraught opening period, Sarri’s team continued to lapse. David Luiz misplaced passes, their midfielders were beaten in 50/50 challenges and the away team did not create a chance of note until they scored.

Yet Malmo finished third in the Swedish league last season and for all their effort, they sorely lack quality. They are also out of practice. Their domestic campaign ended in November and a training camp in Marbella, plus a handful of friendly games, is not ideal.

There was always the suspicion they may tire and after a lively start to the second-half, so it proved. Chelsea should have added more goals, first when Barkley was superbly denied by Johan Dahlin and then when Pedro curled wide – but for Sarri, this was welcome respite. How long it will last remains another question entirely.

Ban for bankrupt Layezy Racing syndicate’s 23 horses as the British Horseracing Authority step in

  • The 23 horses owned by the Layezy Racing club have been stopped from racing
  • Ban comes after the syndicate’s owner Mike Stanley filed for bankruptcy
  • The BHA stepped in on Thursday to officially disband racehorse ownership club

The 23 horses owned by the Layezy Racing club have been stopped from racing after the syndicate’s owner Mike Stanley filed for bankruptcy.

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) stepped in on Thursday to officially disband the racehorse ownership club linked to the doomed Layezy Racing betting syndicate, which may have cost people tens of millions in savings.

The Layezy Racing Owners Club, run by Mr Stanley and with more than 2,000 members, has been shut down and its horses placed in the hands of trustees.

Its closure meant the BHA had to inform Kayley Woollacott, one of seven trainers affected, that she was not allowed to saddle one of the syndicate’s runners at Fakenham on Friday.

Sportsmail revealed last month that nearly £2million invested in the Layezy Racing betting syndicate by members had been used by Mr Stanley without their knowledge to buy and train 23 horses in the last year.

Although the horses run in Layezy Racing Owners Club’s lime-green colours, Mr Stanley is the ultimate beneficiary owner and is listed on the paperwork.

Mr Stanley filed for bankruptcy last week. Administrators at Duff & Phelps confirmed to Sportsmail on Thursday they had been appointed by the secretary of state to be the trustees in Mike Stanley and Layezy’s bankruptcy.

It is feared that the shortfall between the assets of Mr Stanley and the syndicate and what members claim they are owed could be £70m.

Members revealed to Sportsmail this week that many of them face financial ruin due to the syndicate’s closure.

A BHA spokesman said: ‘Insolvent individuals or entities are not permitted to own and run racehorses.

‘As such, those horses will not be allowed to run until further notice. The BHA is contacting the trainers responsible for the horses to ensure they are sufficiently informed about what support is available to them, and will work with the trainers to ensure the horses continue to receive the first-class care they are accustomed to.

‘This is a complex situation and the BHA is working with the relevant authorities to assist in any way it can.

‘Anyone financially involved or dependent upon the Layezy Racing Owners Club Syndicate will receive updates from the trustees via the Layezyinvestors@duffandphelps.com email address. Anyone who feels they may be a victim of fraud can contact Action Fraud.’

Jan Vertonghen confident Tottenham can progress in Champions League after win over Borussia Dortmund

‘We’re not there yet but it’s a big step also’: Jan Vertonghen confident Tottenham can secure Champions League progress after emphatic first-leg victory over Borussia Dortmund

  • Jan Vertonghen praised Tottenham’s display against Borussia Dortmund
  • Spurs are 3-0 up ahead of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie
  • Vertonghen contributed a goal and assist from left wing-back in the victory

Ed Elliot, Press Association Sport

Jan Vertonghen accepts that Tottenham’s 3-0 demolition of Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie makes it hard for them to play the underdog card.

Spurs overcame a poor first-half display at Wembley to put one foot in the quarter-finals with a scintillating second-half performance that Vertonghen was at the forefront of.

The Belgian, playing in an unusual role of left wing-back, made Spurs’ opener 76 seconds after the restart when he crossed for Son Heung-min and then scored the second goal in the 83rd minute.

Fernando Llorente then completed a memorable night for Mauricio Pochettino’s side when he nodded in the third with his first meaningful touch of the game.

It will take some capitulation in Dortmund on March 5 for them not to make it through to the last eight, on a night when Harry Kane and Dele Alli should be back in the fold.

‘We have to focus on ourselves but 3-0 in a home tie in the Champions League is a big result, and against at this moment the best German side,’ Vertonghen said. ‘We are very pleased.

‘Everyone who is playing in the Champions League now they look at each other and see who the strong teams are.

‘Results like this does not help us to be the underdog. We are very pleased with the result and are in a good position for the away game now.

‘I think if you’d asked before the game whether we’d be happy with 3-0 everyone would have said yes.

‘It’s a great result for us. Obviously we’re not there yet but it’s a big step also.’

Harry Winks felt Spurs gave a show of intent after securing a valuable advantage

Harry Winks felt Spurs gave a show of intent after securing a valuable advantage

Midfielder Harry Winks, who was the flag-bearer for Spurs’ Champions League tie against Inter Milan in 2011, admits it is extra special to him and hopes this sends a message to the rest of Europe.

‘We hope it’s a statement to show that we are up there and we mean business and that we want to do well and go as far as we can in the Champions League,’ he said.

‘There is no better way of doing that than beating Dortmund 3-0 at home.

‘It is up there with one of the greatest results I have had in a Spurs shirt, the magnitude of the game was higher and it was a big and important game, so to get the result was fantastic for us and I am incredibly proud and delighted to be playing for this team.

‘I have been in the stands and watched Spurs play in the Champions League many years ago, so to play and get the win and to do as well as we did makes it that little bit more special.’

Martin Keown slams Arsenal in defeat by BATE Borisov – but backs Gunners for Europa League progress

‘Certainly under Emery the worst performance we would have seen’: Martin Keown slams Arsenal in defeat by BATE Borisov – but still backs the Gunners to progress in Europa League

  • Arsenal slumped to a dismal defeat away to BATE Borisov in Europa League
  • Gunners need to overcome 1-0 deficit in second leg at Emirates on February 21
  • Martin Keown believes the team’s display was ‘as poor as I can remember’

Sportsmail Reporter

Arsenal’s flops were heavily criticised by Martin Keown after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat to BATE Borisov in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.

Despite picking an experienced side, Unai Emery’s team conceded to Stanislav Dragun on the stroke of half-time and managed just two shots on target all game before Alexandre Lacazette was sent off late on.

The Gunners will now have to overhaul their opponents in the return leg at the Emirates on February 21.

On the performance, Keown told BT Sport: ‘As poor as I can remember, certainly under Emery the worst performance we would have seen.

‘You have to give BATE credit it is a remarkable result for them sat on the edge of their box.

‘Arsenal just didn’t have the penetration, there was sloppiness within their play, you can blame the pitch which of course is a poor excuse but you have to be better than this as an Arsenal team.’

Despite a sluggish and careless display, Keown is still confident that the Gunners can record a handsome enough win to progress in the competition

‘You would expect a response from Emery and his team, he would have spoken to them at Arsenal, on 70 minutes he made changes and they had even more possession.

‘So many poor passes. That is concentration that is being in the right place mentally.

‘They have got it all to do in the return leg.

‘I fully expect them to win the second leg but that was a very disappointing performance.’
