Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘rages in Manchester United dressing room’ following defeat by Paris St Germain

  • Paris Saint-Germain handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first defeat as interim boss
  • He reportedly made sure his players knew exactly how he felt after the match
  • Man United face a difficult task to overturn the 2-0 deficit in Paris next month

Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘showed his anger in the dressing room’ following his side’s 2-0 defeat by PSG on Tuesday night.

Goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe handed Solskjaer his first defeat in the Old Trafford hotseat.

The 45-year-old reportedly made sure his players knew exactly how he felt in the changing room afterwards.

‘He told them that they tried to play the game as if it was a one legged tie,’ a source at the Premier League club told The Sun.

‘He wanted them to remain patient and not to concede easy goals and they then went and conceded from a relatively easy set-piece and everything just went downhill from there.’

Despite being frustrated by the way his side played against the Ligue 1 leaders, Solskjaer remained upbeat ahead of the return leg at the Parc des Princes on March 6.

‘The players were so deflated after the game – they haven’t felt that bad since the time Mourinho was in charge. He tried to keep them optimistic about the second leg,’ the source said.

‘He told them that they have to remain positive in football because anything can happen.’

United face a difficult task to overturn the 2-0 deficit in Paris next month and will play the second leg without star Paul Pogba. The midfielder was sent off for a second bookable offence late on in the clash at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer’s side turn their attention to the FA Cup with a trip to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea in the fifth round of the competition up next.

Eden Hazard plays down incident with pitch-invading Malmo fan

‘It’s not an incident, he just asked for my shirt’: Eden Hazard plays down pitch-invading Malmo fan grabbing him after Chelsea’s Europa League win

  • Eden Hazard downplayed him being hugged by a pitch-invading fan in Malmo
  • The culprit’s grip was released only when the forward handed over his shirt
  • Fan was one of at least four from the home stands who got onto the pitch
  • Hazard appeared unnerved but later brushed off the moment after the 2-1 win

Press Association

Eden Hazard downplayed the disturbing scene which saw him hugged by a pitch-invading fan at the final whistle of Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Malmo.

The culprit’s grip was released only when the Belgium forward handed over his shirt and UEFA are likely to investigate.

The fan, one of at least four from the home stands who encroached onto the playing surface, was escorted off by stewards, holding the shirt. Hazard appeared unnerved, but later brushed off the moment.

‘It’s not an incident. He just asked for my shirt,’ said Hazard, who came on as a second-half substitute in Thursday night’s Europa League last-32 first leg in Sweden.

Chelsea responded from their embarrassing 6-0 mauling at Manchester City, but were less than convincing and received a stark warning from head coach Maurizio Sarri afterwards.

Chelsea appeared to be coasting at 2-0, through goals from Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud, but Anders Christiansen’s strike 10 minutes from time means the Blues’ progression to the last-16 is no formality.

Sarri’s future remains in doubt ahead of a crucial week: Monday’s FA Cup tie with Manchester United, next Thursday’s second leg with Malmo and the February 24 Carabao Cup final with City. The Wembley date is followed by the Premier League clash with Tottenham.

The 60-year-old Italian said: ‘If we concede a goal like this to a team like Manchester City or United or Tottenham, then you risk conceding three goals in 10 minutes. So we have to do better, I think.

‘We need to have continuity and consistency, I think, in the mental condition to be able to approach every match with the same level of application, determination and attention.

‘You know very well that, if you are in bad mental condition in England, in 10 days you can lose three or four very important matches.

‘So we need consistency. We have to approach every match in the same way. It’s not easy, but we have to try.’

Sarri was content with the performance, which saw Chelsea’s first away goals in 2019 after losses to Arsenal, Bournemouth and at the Etihad Stadium.

Sarri was pleased with the win as the pressure on the Chelsea boss briefly subsided as a result

‘I am happy because we played with a very good level of confidence,’ Sarri added. ‘It wasn’t really very easy after the last match. But, today, we were confident because we moved the ball also inside our box.

‘We need to think we have to gain qualification in the next match at Stamford Bridge. We have to play because they are really very compact, very solid.’

As well as the small pitch invasion, UEFA is likely to scrutinise Malmo supporters’ use of flares and the throwing of drinks over the partition between home and away fans.

Malmo were playing for the first time since beating Besiktas to reach the knockout stages due to the domestic off-season during the harsh Swedish winter. Boss Uwe Rosler was pleased with his side’s performance.

‘We’ve not shown any respect to Chelsea, especially in the beginning of the game,’ Rosler said. ‘Chelsea didn’t have a single chance before they scored.

‘I’m pleased with the way we approached the game, tactically and mentally. They showed us respect. They brought N’Golo Kante and Hazard on. There’s a reason for that.’

The late goal has given Malmo a chance of an upset. Rosler added: ‘The odds were against us in the beginning, and are again now, but we rewarded ourselves for the way we played.’

Everton target overseas commercial growth to catch up with Premier League’s top six

Everton target overseas commercial growth alongside new stadium revenue boost to help catch up with Premier League’s top six

  • Everton believe revenue from new stadium won’t be enough to catch top six
  • They currently have the seventh highest wage bill in the Premier League
  • But the Toffees posted a loss last week, while Liverpool made £106million profit
  • Overseas growth has been earmarked as a way to bridge the financial gulf

Carl Markham, Press Association Sport

Increased revenue from a new stadium alone will not be enough for Everton to close the gap to the top six, according to chief finance officer Sasha Ryazantsev.

The Toffees have the seventh-largest wage bill in the Premier League but their financial fortunes were put into perspective last week when neighbours Liverpool announced a record £106million profit, with turnover of £455million.

Everton’s last accounts reported £189m turnover and a loss of £22.9m and Ryazantsev believes worldwide commercial growth is key to them catching up.

A new, improved, multi-year deal has been signed with Fanatics, the global leader in licensed sports merchandise, and includes commitments towards extensive work on retail planning for the move to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

But Ryazantsev insists their global ambitions mean they are looking further afield for other opportunities.

‘The top six have an ability to attract sectors which would not seem obvious to partner with and we would like to continue with the number of partners, geography and sector expansion,’ he said.

‘Whilst we can do certain things commercially now there is only so much we can do without a new stadium.

‘The top six all have a new stadium or a stadium that is future-proof – even those with smaller stadia can physically stay there for a longer time without having to move.

‘The expectation is we will seek to expand further, obviously in Asia, which is a key market, but Africa is a key market for us as well with the relationship with (shirt sponsors) SportPesa.

‘That is where we are. We have to make progress to be able to take it to the next level.’

The return to the club of former England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney in the summer of 2017 was seen as the first step in increasing Everton’s worldwide profile.

His departure 12 months later left a void which the club hope will be filled by the likes of Richarlison, who within months of joining in July had made his debut for Brazil.

‘The signing of Wayne Rooney did give us a spike in interest through the acquisition of one particular player,’ said commercial director Alan McTavish.

‘But if we look at the quality of the individuals we have invested in recent times we have two high-profile Brazilians (Richarlison and Bernard), a very high-profile Colombian (Yerry Mina), England’s number one goalkeeper (Jordan Pickford).

‘While we may no longer have Wayne Rooney as part of the playing squad the players we do have put us in a different space in terms of global appeal.

‘Richarlison, on his first international break, scored two goals on his full debut so having the Brazilian number nine in the squad can only be a positive thing.’

Bramley-Moore Dock still offers the largest single potential for revenue growth, however.

‘As we look towards the new stadium we are confident a naming rights agreement will form part of the commercial growth and will be part of the business model going forward,’ added McTavish.

Flamengo supporters sang a song to honour the dead at 10 minutes of play. The score was 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Survivor Cauan Emanuel, who was released from hospital this week, was filmed crying in the tribunes of the Maracana, sided by family members and Flamengo fans.

The victims were between 14 and 16 years old. Police are still investigating what caused the fire.

Firefighters were called just after 5am on Friday to the sprawling Ninho de Urubu training grounds in Rio de Janeiro’s western region.

The cause of the fire was not known, but Claudio Castro, vice governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, said authorities were looking at the possibility of a short circuit in an air conditioning unit.

In a statement, the city said the area that burned was registered for parking, not as a dormitory. The statement said an investigation into the licensing process was under way.

Rio de Janeiro mayor Marcelo Crivella ordered three days of mourning, and President Jair Bolsonaro issued a statement lamenting the fire had taken ‘the young lives at the beginning of pursuing their professional dreams’.

Flamengo is perhaps the most famous club in the country, with an estimated 40 million fans nationwide.

Among the most famous players to come through the club are Ronaldinho and Zico, former stars on Brazil’s national team; top goalscorer Adriano, who rose to fame at Inter Milan; and current Real Madrid star Vinicius, Jr, who not long ago was living in the building destroyed by the fire.
