The 38-year-old is currently employed as assistant manager at Aston Villa and forwards coach Steve Borthwick insisted he was a welcome onlooker.

He said: ‘To have the opportunity to speak to someone like him with his experience is excellent. It’s a different sport, yes, but it’s fantastic to to chat to someone so successful.’

Borthwick revealed Terry told him: ‘It’s a different sport and different perspective, but you talk about the traits of successful teams. We’re trying to keep learning and keep developing to be a successful team. He (Terry) talked about how the senior playing group led and drove the standards at training.’

Fellow footballing luminaries including Gareth Southgate, Antonio Conte and Alan Pardew have previously been invited along.

Eddie Jones will name his team to face Wales on Thursday, before the squad travel down the M4 to Cardiff on Friday afternoon.

Jones will cut his current training squad down from 33 to 25 on Tuesday evening – with the main decision being who stays in camp following an injury to Chris Ashton.

England hope to have Ashton available for the final two rounds of their Six Nations title quest as the Sale wing battles a calf strain.

Ashton suffered the injury in training during the squad’s three-day camp in London and will receive treatment at his club this week, ruling him out of the Wales game.

It is hoped the Sharks wing will return in time to face Italy and Scotland, however.

Jack Nowell impressed in the round one win over Ireland but was demoted to the bench against France, enabling Ashton to make his first Six Nations start for six years.

Nowell is the obvious candidate to reclaim the number 14 jersey against Warren Gatland’s side but another option is Joe Cokanasiga.

Jones put his players through their paces again on Tuesday morning as they look to maintain their unbeaten start to the competition.

Images showed the forwards producing some bone-crunching tackles on their team-mates as they landed on crash mats while the likes of Owen Farrell and Henry Slade worked on their attacking plan.

England have scored 10 tries in the opening two games and have used their kicking game to their advantage. They left France in all sorts of trouble last time out with pinpoint kicks through the line to the onrushing backs.

England will be confident of completing the Grand Slam if they can navigate themselves to victory over the Welsh. After this weekend, England will have home games against Italy and Scotland to come.

WBC president calls for rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder

‘These important fights the public are demanding must take place’: WBC president calls for rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder

  • The prospect of Tyson Fury rematch with Deontay Wilder has been revived
  • WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says fighters have moral duty to reach terms
  • He wants super-fights to find undisputed heavyweight champion of the world

Jeff Powell For The Daily Mail

The prospect of Tyson Fury‘s rematch with Deontay Wilder still happening has been revived by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman insisting that they and Anthony Joshua have a moral duty to come to terms for super-fights to find the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

High expectations of Fury reprising his epic draw with Wilder and the winner then fighting Joshua receded as Manchester’s Gypsy King announced his massive £80 million US television deal to box on ESPN under the promotion of Frank Warren and his American partner Bob Arum.

With the three giants of the heavyweight division now linked with different TV networks on both sides of the Atlantic the May 18 date for Fury to challenge again for Wilder’s WBC title remained unconfirmed.

But Sulaiman has responded by saying: ‘These important fights which the public are demanding must take place. The priority for the WBC is boxing and the fans, over television rivalry.’

Then he went so far as to call the promoters to account: ‘It is their responsibility to make the necessary deals.

‘Anyone who prevents these matches being made will have to live with the consequences of depriving the sport and the people.

‘We are entering a different era in boxing with the major investment through ESPN and DAZN bringing a change in broadcasting platforms.

‘Hopefully the internet will put an end to the way in which so many big fights have failed to happen in the past, to the detriment of boxing.

‘Given the huge public interest following the first fight for our heavyweight belt between Wilder and Fury, we mandated the rematch and extended the time for the parties to negotiate before going to purse bids.

‘After being told on Friday evening about Tyson Fury’s contract with ESPN I have spoken with both parties about the rematch.

‘The WBC will follow the proper protocol to examine what steps we can take to help the fight go ahead.’

Sulaiman hopes, also, for the winner to fight WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion Joshua to find the first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis.

The time scale may be delayed, even though Wilder is indicating that he is not personally contracted to the Showtime cable network in America and may be able to fight Fury on ESPN there as well as BT Sport in the UK.

Anthony Joshua against the Wilder-Fury winner would be a more complicated transaction

Wilder refers to the proposed date, saying: ‘I will still be ready for Fury on May 18.’

That is more likely to be put back to September, with Fury promoter Frank Warren’s US partner Bob Arum preferring both men to have warm-up fights there in May ‘to build up even higher audience interest in America.

Joshua against the Wilder-Fury winner would be a more complicated transaction. Joshua, who defends his belts against Jarrell Miller in New York on June 1, is contracted to Sky here and DAZN in America.

But Sulaiman says: ‘While it is not for me to comment on shared broadcasting rights in this case, that has happened before.

‘What matters most is that we are beginning to bring back the old glamour and glitz to the heavyweight championship.

‘It will be a pity if the interested parties do not find a way to come together.’

Spectre of Jofra Archer looms over England pace attack during one-day series against West Indies

Spectre of Jofra Archer looms over England pace attack during one-day series against West Indies

  • Bowlers face a tough challenge in the one-day series against West Indies
  • Pressure is on Liam Plunkett, Mark Wood, Tom Curran and David Willey
  • Fast bowler Archer is on England’s radar for the World Cup and Ashes

Paul Newman for the Daily Mail

Eoin Morgan did his best to avoid talking about his not-so-secret potential World Cup weapon but he knows there will as much attention on Jofra Archer throughout the one-day series against West Indies as the bowlers taking on Chris Gayle and company here.

The stock of Archer, who qualifies for England next month, will rise or fall on the performances of the attack that has helped take Morgan’s side to the top of the rankings in this last five-match 50-over series before they must declare their World Cup hand.

The Barbadian with an English father and British passport is very much on England’s radar for the World Cup and Ashes that follow and, Sportsmail understands, serious consideration was given to fast-tracking Archer into the Lions tour of India this winter and then this series.

Those plans were ultimately discarded but the pressure is very much on Liam Plunkett, Mark Wood, Tom Curran and David Willey to ensure they do suffer at the hands of Gayle, the self-styled ‘Universe Boss’.

‘One of the best attributes I have is to compartmentalise things,’ said Morgan ahead of Wednesday’s first one-day international at the Kensington Oval.

‘Until Jofra qualifies he’s not really in our thoughts. Our focus is on this game and the series.’

West Indies (probable): Gayle, Campbell, S Hope (wkt), Darren Bravo, Hetmyer, Holder (capt), Pooran, Allen, Cottrell, Nurse, Thomas.

England (probable): Roy, Bairstow, Root, Morgan (capt), Buttler (wkt), Stokes, Moeen, Woakes, Rashid, Plunkett, Wood.

TV & radio: Sky Sports Cricket and talkSPORT 2 (play starts 3pm).

While Morgan, who talked at length about Archer’s qualities in a Sportsmail interview on Monday, played a straight bat, Sir Alastair Cook, his predecessor as England one-day captain, was warning against the dangers of making late changes to World Cup plans.

Cook said: ‘We’ve made massive mistakes leading up to World Cups, like changing the formula just before the last one, and in the last four tournaments we’ve made major changes in key positions. It won’t happen this time. Everyone is very clear on their roles and that’s exciting. England have got match-winners pretty much from one to 15.’

The big question remains, though, as to whether they include Archer in that 15 and one bowler under particular scrutiny here will be Plunkett, whose pace in the last year has been well below the 94mph he reached against Pakistan three years ago.

There is a worry that Plunkett, approaching his 34th birthday, may have just started his decline from the bowler who has been such a significant figure in England’s one-day bowling in the last four years.

But Morgan insisted Surrey’s new signing still has his full support.

‘It’s not a concern,’ said Morgan about Plunkett’s apparent dip in pace.

‘It’s not easy facing him because of the trajectory and variations. That’s definitely the case in the Caribbean where a bit of extra height does count.’

Harry Kane in contention to face Burnley as he returns to training ahead of schedule after suffering ankle ligament damage in January

  • Harry Kane injured his ankle in a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in January
  • The ankle injury was originally supposed to keep Harry Kane out for two months
  • However, he has returned to training and may be in contention to face Burnley

Simon Jones for MailOnline

Harry Kane is in contention to face Burnley for Tottenham at Turf Moor on Saturday after returning to training ahead of schedule.

The 25-year-old England captain injured an ankle in the defeat by Manchester United on January 13 and was expected to be out until March.

The ligament damage to his ankle was expected to keep Kane out for at least two months, meaning he would miss 11 games or more.

However, he has returned to Tottenham training after just over one month since his injury.

Despite their star striker’s absence, Spurs have still been performing well in the Premier League. However they did suffer defeats in both the Carabao Cup semi-final to Chelsea and the FA Cup to Crystal Palace during January.

In the league though, Spurs have been on a roll with wins over Leicester, Newcastle, Watford, and Fulham.

They also had an impressive 3-0 win against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match last week.

With games against Chelsea and Arsenal in the league, as well as the return leg against Dortmund coming up, Tottenham will be hoping they can get Harry Kane back in action.

The Spurs and England striker has scored 14 goals and got four assists so far in 22 league matches this season. Plus, he scored four times in his six Champions League group games.

Furious Joshua promises to KO Miller in heated first press conference

0

[ad_1]

Anthony Joshua dropped his usual calm, amenable demeanour and promised to knock Jarrell Miller ‘the f*** out’ during their heated first press conference.

World heavyweight champion Joshua fights New Yorker Miller in his back garden at Madison Square Garden on June 1, and the Brit was given a fiery welcome to the city.

Brooklyn native ‘Big Baby’ Miller pushed Joshua and hurled foul language at him. Before the press conference started, the Briton jumped off the stage and gesticulated at a heckler in the crowd, before being ushered back by his team.

Scroll down for video.

Jarrell Miller pushed Anthony Joshua at the start of their fiery press conference in New York

Jarrell Miller pushed Anthony Joshua at the start of their fiery press conference in New York

After the early theatrics and lengthy introductions, Miller was the first to speak. After a lengthy speech about his upbringing, family and religion, AJ took the microphone – and his mask had truly slipped.

Joshua said: ‘Unbelievable acting, I nearly had a tear in my eye, f***ing hell. Thank you so much for having me. Miller’s a little b****, I’m going to knock him the f*** out, he punches like a fairy.’

Miller cut in and called Joshua an ‘Uncle Tom’, a racially charged term for black people who give up or hide their ethnic traits and practices in order to be accepted into the mainstream.

Joshua has behaved with impeccable restraint in the cauldron of the fight game since leaving behind his troubled past and going on to win Olympic gold and four of the heavyweight belts.

His reaction in New York suggests that for once an opponent has got under his skin. Alternatively, with him being currently upstaged by Tyson Fury, this could be seen as a typical box-office farce.

He constantly referred to himself as the ‘landlord’, in New York to collect Miller’s ‘rent’, in reference to his box office status compared to the lesser known Miller.

Joshua said: ‘Jarrell can’t beat me, not even on his best day. In terms of promotion, I’m the champion, he’s the challenger, this is the first time he’s headlining a show. I’m the landlord, I’m collecting the rent.’

Miller retorted that Joshua had not fought decent opposition to this point, claiming that he was dodging Fury and Deontay Wilder, and that he wanted to fight Dillian Whyte first for easy money.

He said: ‘He fought nobody for the belt, he beat Klitchko after he spent two years out of the rung, he beat nobody. He’s made of baby-s***.

‘He beat Povetkin, Klitschko with ring rust, he’s done stuff, but he ain’t beating me. I’m not playing a role’.

Miller then stood up and left the stage first, leaving Joshua to field questions alone. The Watford-born fighter, rather than talking up the clash, denegrated his opponent’s abilities.

He said: ‘Big Baby, he’s like a parrot, talks the same s***. I thought he would be smarter than that. He’s stupid and ignorant. I could hype it up and talk s***, but Miller can’t punch, he’s coming up against a real fighter.

‘I’m not here to talk s***, it’s truth in plain sight, I’ll beat Miller and knock him out. Me beating Miller may not make sense on June 1 but it will make sense in 5 years, it’s all part of the legacy.’

Joshua also said he wanted to fight Wilder next, despite broadcasting deals threatening to keep him, the American and Fury apart for the foreseeable future.

He said: ‘We’ve been trying to negotiate with Wilder since I fought Takam, we had the date booked, an offer in place. My first dream was to fight Wilder at Wembley. If I want to fight them, it’s up to the broadcasters to work together, they won’t hold this fight up.

‘I just gave him [Miller] some cheeseburgers and he was ready, it was a simple negotiation.

‘I’m just fighting to have fun, I’m not here to win a popularity contest. I don’t expect to be one of the greats, you have to do it for your own reasons.

‘Just give me time, I’ll beat them all, I’ve done it half the time. Wilder’s had 40 fights, Fury’s had 11 years and one good fight which makes him a boxing god, I’ve come up and fought everyone since my 16th fight, I’ve got nothing to prove. If you can’t see it then I can’t preach to the blind. Miller’s just someone else in my way, and when I beat Wilder after him, I carry on fighting for the love of it.’
