‘Twenty five shots is not bad but you need to score’: Barcelona rue profligacy in Lyon which leaves Champions League progress uncertain

  • Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet is confident they’ll reach the quarter finals
  • Barca failed to score despite managing 25 shots in their stalemate away to Lyon
  • Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembele and disappointing Luis Suarez could not score

Matthew Smith For Mail Online

Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet remains confident they will progress to the Champions League quarter finals despite being held to a 0-0 draw in Lyon.

Barca failed to score despite managing 25 shots in their stalemate on Tuesday, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of next month’s second leg.

Only five of the visitors’ attempts were on target but Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembele nor the disappointing Luis Suarez could beat keeper Anthony Lopes.

Lyon could even have taken the lead if it were not for a splendid Marc Andre ter Stegen save in the first half when the German tipped a ferocious Marc Terrier shot onto his crossbar.

‘We came here to try and put in a good performance but we couldn’t get the goal. Twenty-five shots is not bad, you need to score but when you have so many shots it means you played well, and we did,’ said Lenglet. ‘We just lacked a bit of confidence, and I’m sure we’ll score at the Nou Camp.’

The breakthrough might not come from Uruguay forward Suarez, who has not scored in almost 25 hours in the Champions League.

‘Let’s see what happens in the Camp Nou but it’s always good to go away from home and not concede. Lyon played well but their keeper was very good,’ said Lenglet.

Barca coach Ernesto Valverde added: ‘My feeling is that we played well. We were switched on. I think that we deserved a better result and did enough to win. It just wasn’t our night.

‘We are strong at home but there’s no denying that 0-0 away from home is a dangerous first leg result. We’ll really need our fans at the Camp Nou, everything’s up for grabs.’

Lyon are hoping the return of their France striker and captain Nabil Fekir, who was suspended on Tuesday, will help them get an away goal.

‘We know that he has what it takes, technically, to help us and to get that goal for us,’ said coach Bruno Genesio.

Lyon may not have scored but crucially they did not concede either, despite being overwhelmed in the second half, largely thanks to fullback Leo Dubois and centre back Jason Denayer.

‘We had chances but didn’t put them away,’ said forward Bertrand Traore. ‘We were solid. In these kind of matches you have to be very disciplined. A 0-0 is a rather good result ahead of the return leg.’

Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite Presenting Percy could miss warm-up run at Fairyhouse this weekend

Marcus Townend for MailOnline

Owner Philip Reynolds says it is ’50-50′ if Presenting Percy has his Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup prep-run in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on Saturday.

The Pat Kelly-trained Gold Cup favourite was a surprise withdrawal from last weekend’s Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park and currently will have to go to the Festival on the back of just one run over hurdles.

Reynolds said the prospect of racing on rough ground at Gowran Park was the reason for not running Presenting Percy with no risks being taken.

Reynolds added: ‘I went down to see him myself at the weekend, the horse is in great shape. The intention was to go back. Pat had the horse in as good a shape as he needed to but the ground was as bad as it’s been in Ireland all year.

‘We may run him this weekend. Every bit of rain helps. There are 12 entries and it would be nice to get him out in a small field. We are trying to minimize the risk as much as possible. I’d say it is 50-50 whether he runs or not.

‘We have sat and sat all year waiting to get him out. I am not sure how many more opportunities Pat will have to go to the Gold Cup, I doubt I will have many more. We just decided to be ultra careful.’

Meanwhile, Laurina has her prep-race for the Champion Hurdle in Listed Quevega Mares Hurdle at Punchestown this afternoon.

The Willie Mullins-trained winner of the mares’ novice hurdle at last year’s Festival has only run once this season, easily winning a two-horse race at Sandown in January. She is third favourite for the Champion at 9-2.

If she comes through the test – she will be long odds-on favourite – Laurina will join fellow mare Apple’s Jade in the Champion Hurdle as serious opposition to dual winner Buveur D’Air.

Gordon Elliott, Apple’s Jade’s trainer, confirmed it was ‘all systems go, for her Champion Hurdle challenge following her win in the Irish Champion Hurdle

Samcro, who started the season as Elliott’s No 1 Champion Hurdle hope before below par runs were put down to a lung infection, might be ready for a return to action in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Festival but that the gelding would have to show clear signs he was ready to come back.

Elliott added: ‘Cheltenham is coming fast enough but he has options there and at Aintree and Punchestown. The next 10 days are important. He looks OK but until you give them some good bits of work, you don’t know where you are or what you are doing. It’s not the be all and end all that he gets to Cheltenham.

‘With those good horses, when they lose their form, nine times out of 10 there is a problem. We gave him a fortnight not doing much and he got antibiotics. He missed a couple of weeks but at that stage of the season it is crucial. I would not be taking any chances with him.’

Paul Nicholls trained the 3,000th winner of his career when Capitaine won at Taunton.

Liverpool 0-0 Bayern Munich: Reds frustrated in Champions League stalemate

0

[ad_1]

Liverpool have only failed to score in four games this season, and three of them have been in Europe. Short-term it means they are going to have to do it the hard way when these teams next meet, on March 13. As a pattern of results, it suggests there is something still to be said for those crafty, resilient defenders, that populate this tournament like man traps.

Bayern Munich are not the quickest at the back, but they know the course and distance and it showed. This is a club that has missed two Champions League semi-finals since 2010; they’ve had more than a few nights like this and were rarely alarmed. They came, they saw, they did a job.

It was a throwback of a game, after Liverpool’s high octane encounters last season. Munich kept a full strength forward line at bay and frustrated the home crowd into a state of tetchiness.

Anfield was its usual noisy self to begin with, but long before the end there was a sense of frustration, that their magic trio were being handled. Liverpool had decent possession and good chances and were the better team – but Roberto Firmino was replaced by Divock Origi with 15 minutes remaining, a sure sign the best laid plans were going awry.

They could have nicked it, had Manuel Neuer not made a save from Sadio Mane at the near post with four minutes to go, but Liverpool didn’t have a whole lot to show for rather a significant shift.

It is far from a lost cause, mind. Liverpool usually score and, every time they do in the return leg, Munich will have to match it with double. Even a goalless draw gives the visitors a puncher’s chance on penalties, and Virgil van Dijk will be back, too – although there was little wrong with Liverpool’s marshalling of Robert Lewandowski in his absence.

Munich’s striker had outscored Liverpool on his own in the Champions League group stage, but there was scant sign of his status as the competition’s top marksman here. Quick feet, yes, wonderful movement, certainly, but scarcely a meaningful intervention in front of goal. His greatest contribution was the frissons of anxiety his very presence caused. He has a brilliant record against Joel Matip in Germany, too, but it did not show.

Jordan Henderson was outstanding but Fabinho was arguably the hero of the night, being a battlefield promotion due to Liverpool’s lengthy list of absentees at the back. He did not let the side down, even if Bayern Munich’s priorities lay elsewhere.

For Munich, the star turns were the men of experience: Mats Hummels, Thiago Alcantara, Javi Martinez. So many times they took control as Liverpool probed and found only dead ends.

It certainly put Tottenham’s three-goal winning margin over Borussia Dortmund into perspective. Dortmund lead Munich in the Bundesliga, but there was no sign Liverpool could slice through Germany’s second best team on current standings with Tottenham’s ease.

At a mid-point in the first-half Jurgen Klopp turned to the crowd around him and made the universal gesture – in these parts, at least – to calm down. He may have been better served giving the same advice to his goalkeeper, Alisson. Three times in the first 17 minutes he was guilty of a less than composed clearance, and had Bayern Munich been sharper to react they could have been ahead.

Alisson’s first clearance of the match was unconvincing to say the least, played straight to Kingsley Coman in the Munich midfield, although his response amounted to nothing, Soon after, there was a poor punch to clear a cross from former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry – one of those ex-Premier League players who turns up looking comfortable in an elite European starting line up, to the surprise of all – before a state of complete confusion between Alisson and Matip let in Coman again. He was put through by Lewandowski but shot into the side-netting,

That was the story of the match, largely. Munich did not create much of their own, but looked dangerous when capitalising on Liverpool’s mistakes. This is what happened after 37 minutes when Trent Alexander-Arnold came haring out the back only to be calmly dispossessed by Thiago Alcantara as Munich quickly countered. This time it was Gnabry on the ball, his shot diverted round the far post by Alisson’s fingertips.

Before the game there was great confidence in the streets around Anfield, with locals predicting an emphatic victory – three, maybe four goal margins, were not uncommon estimates. Soon, adjustments were being made.

The experience of high end elite clubs in this competition counts for so much. Yes, Munich’s defenders will never be confused with F1 testing, but they are solid citizens, good defenders, and have been around the block.

Liverpool got near to goal on a number of occasions, but Munich always repelled them. They made blocks, they got a foot in, nicked a vital touch, a smart interception, a diverting header. When Liverpool did get beyond them, finishing let Klopp’s side down.

Henderson, as so often happens on big European nights, was outstanding. He raises his game in matches like this, and did here. In the 12th minute, it was his neat through ball that put Mohamed Salah through, the striker getting a touch on the volley as the ball came over his shoulder, but not enough to defeat Neuer.

Naby Keita looked lively, too, and in the 17th minute Mane should have done better from his pass, shooting wide from a strong position.

Might Liverpool have had a penalty after 33 minutes? Referee Gianluca Rocchi did not think so and as VAR is now in place for Champions League games, his team of assessors must have agreed.

Firmino, passed fit prior to kick-off, found Keita whose shot was blocked by a desperate lunge from Niklas Sule. Replays showed it struck an arm, but in such close proximity to the shot it is hard to see how he could have avoided contact. The ball went loose to Mane in a fabulous position, but he made a poor show of his effort on the turn.

Keita had a shot deflected high in the 38th minute and Mane had more time to take control than he understood. Instead, he tried a hurried overhead kick that sent the ball wide. Equally, Matip should have done more to capitalise on a cross from Henderson after a lovely backheel from Salah.

It meant the best chance of the game actually fell to a Liverpool player – but at the wrong end, In the 13th minute, Gnabry crossed and Matip, in a rare flap about the nearby presence of Lewandowski, leathered the ball against the chest of his own goalkeeper. It was the save of the night; not that Alisson knew too much about it.

So to Bavaria, where Munich have lost two of their last 26 games in Europe. By worrying contrast, Liverpool’s last five Champions League games outside Anfield have ended in defeat.

Fabinho is Liverpool’s life-saver as he holds the thin red line in Virgil van Dijk’s absence

0

[ad_1]

Shorn of key attacking personnel, this was not the real Bayern Munich. Nor, for reasons unknown, was it the real Liverpool. What it was, then, was one of those European matches we used to get in the old days when every round was straight knock-out. Cagey, risk-free and, if we are honest, a little flat.

This was a Liverpool European night but not as we know it. Absent was the familiar helter skelter and in its place a match between two giants of the game that only occasionally threatened to live up to billing.

Just as well, then, that Liverpool didn’t concede a goal. Just as well, equally, that players such as Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Thomas Muller were not playing for the opposition. Had this been a Bayern Munich line-up of yore, it is hard to think Liverpool would be heading to Bavaria in three weeks with a clean sheet to bolster them.

Bayern were unusually unambitious, here. They sought to contain. The fact they were facing a Liverpool central defensive pairing that comprised the fourth best centre half at the club and a central midfield player was not enough to tempt the Germans to consistently engage.

If Robben – injured – and Ribery – on the bench – been playing then it may well have been a little different.

Liverpool are not currently at their best. All teams go through these periods of uncertainty during a long season and Jurgen Klopp’s players are hanging on a little as they wait for real form to return.

As such, this was not the worst result. A goal for Liverpool in the Allianz Arena next month gives them everything. That night they will not be forced to field Joel Matip and Fabinho at the heart of their defence either.

This was the problem that stalked Liverpool here. With Virgil van Dijk suspended and Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren injured, Klopp was seeking solutions. At the end of the 90 minutes, the Liverpool manager will feel that he has got away it.

Bayern did carry a threat from wide positions. Serge Gnabry on the left was impressive while Kingsley Coman on the right was even better. At times in the first half they worried Liverpool and the challenges facing Matip and Fabinho were clear.

Fabinho is not a defender while Matip is strictly speaking not quite good enough for this level.

Matip, 27, has played a lot of football in the Bundesliga so Bayern would have known he is competent in the air and quick over ground. But they would also have known that he can look coltish in possession and can make poor positional decisions.

That was probably why Bayern coach Niko Kovac instructed striker Robert Lewandowski to push up on the Cameroon international early on, suspecting that it was he rather than his makeshift defensive partner who was likely to err.

At times in the first half, Matip and Fabinho looked equally vulnerable while Bayern were also encouraged by the erratic footwork of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Defensive calmness tends to start with a team’s goalkeeper but Alisson has not been at his best recently.

He saved importantly with his chest early as Matip almost diverted a Gnabry cross in to his own goal. But he and Matip then got in a muddle with successive poor clearances to allow Coman to shoot before a poor Fabinho header gave Lewandowski a sight of goal.

A night of persistent Bayern pressure would have in all likelihood only increased Liverpool’s problems. An early goal for the Germans and they could have rolled Liverpool over.

But as Klopp’s midfield slowly took a hold of the game, so the Bayern threat receded. In the end Fabinho was asked to make only one decisive contribution, early in the second half, and he was able to respond.

Coman’s break down the left was immediately threatening and his low ball in to the penalty area was perfect for Lewandowski as the Poland striker received it with back to goal on the six-yard line.

It was a situation fraught with danger for Fabinho. One false move and Lewandowski would turn and score. Another and the Brazilian would concede a penalty. So his tackle had to be decisive and perfect in weight and timing.

It was all of these things and Liverpool were able to move back upfield with the great Bayern striker left on the ground.

It felt like a key moment in the game and may well transpire to be in terms of the whole tie. The return leg in Munich will be different, more open. In Munich, they are nervous of Klopp as he has hurt them before. It is not inconceivable that he will find a way to do so again.

As the Barcelona and Lyon players made their way to the dressing rooms to get ready for kick off, they were greeted by two TV screens in the hallway.

Being broadcast live to the stadium were videos of sick children in hospital waiting for the heroes to walk by.

One by one, the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and more all stopped to wave at the youngsters to make the day.

Great idea and heartwarming stuff on a cold night in France.

BAYERN FANS MARCH TO ANFIELD

While Anfield is famous for it’s atmosphere on European nights, Bayern Munich fans made sure it wasn’t just the Liverpool fans who would be heard on Tuesday.

The German champions sold 2,000 tickets for the game against Liverpool but it is reported that over 3,000 made their way over for the last 16 clash.

Just hours before kick off, those thousands of Bayern fans marched towards the stadium in full voice as police escorted them through a park in Merseyside.

‘THE GR€€D KNOWS NO £IMITS!’

Bayern fans protested the price of tickets in the Champions League on Tuesday by unfurling three banners in the away section.

While a debate about the £30 price-cap on away tickets in the Premier League has been discussed recently, it seems the German supporters have had enough of the rising prices for European trips.

The banners read: ‘AWAY TICKET: LFC £48, FCB €55’

‘TH€ GR€€D KNOWS NO £IMITS!’

‘TWENTY IS PLENTY’.

LOVREN UNDER COVER

Jurgen Klopp deployed Fabinho in a centre back role alongside Joel Matip against Bayern as Liverpool struggle for numbers at the back.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren all missed the game through suspension or injury but the hosts still managed to keep a clean sheet at Anfield.

However, while Lovren wasn’t on the pitch, cameras did pick up the Croatian defender watching from a box at the stadium.

Looking like Little Red Riding Hood, Lovren draped himself in a huge blanket as he tried to keep himself warm up in the stands.

Not the greatest look but he did look comfy.

ARSENAL FANS RAVE ABOUT GNABRY

Serge Gnabry’s career at Arsenal struggled to take off as he only made 18 senior appearances at the Emirates before being sent out on loan to West Brom for a year.

The winger then made his move back to his homeland of Germany to try his luck in the Bundesliga.

While he enjoyed spells at Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim, Gnabry is starting to find his feet at Bayern where he started against Liverpool on Tuesday.

The German attacker looked promising against the Reds which sent some Arsenal fans into meltdown on social media.

One said the 23-year-old what ‘exactly the kind of winger’ the Gunners needed while one simply tweeted: ‘What a player.’

SUAREZ’S AWAY-GOAL DROUGHT GOES ON

Despite having some of the world’s best attackers on the pitch, Barcelona failed to break the deadlock against Lyon.

While Luis Suarez has had his moments this season, the striker has struggled to score an away goal in Europe for a long time. A very long time.

As of the 22nd minute of Barca’s last 16 clash against Lyon, Suarez went a full day of game time (1440 minutes) without scoring an away goal in the Champions League, with the last time he netted away from home was when Barcelona faced Roma in September 2015.

Yikes.

Lyon 0-0 Barcelona: Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez miss gilt-edged chances to grab crucial advantage in Champions League tie after Marc-Andre ter Stegen made two stunning saves to deny hosts

  • Barcelona were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday night
  • The La Liga leaders dominated the match at the Groupama stadium but lacked accuracy up front
  • And they were grateful to their goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen who made two great saves in first half

The faces of the Barcelona players on the final whistle told the story – Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba exchanged bemused ‘how did we not win that’ looks and Luis Suarez curled his lip and frowned his brow painfully.

Barcelona had fired 25 shots at the Lyon goal, albeit only five of them on target, but had failed to come away with an away goal on Tuesday night.

Manchester City couldn’t beat Lyon in the group stage and Barcelona had suffered just as much. Barcelona will be favourites in the second leg but the Ligue 1 side have ensured they go to the Camp Nou with, at the very least, a puncher’s chance of making the quarter-finals.

There were 17 shots just in the first half and 13 of them were from Barcelona. No sooner had Cunyet Cakir blown his whistle than Lionel Messi surged at the centre of Lyon’s defence and was brought down by Houssem Aoaur who was booked.

From the kick – now with the customary player lying down behind the wall to make sure Messi doesn’t roll it in as everyone jumps – he floated it over.

Aoaur then showed quick feet at the other end of the pitch and forced Marc-Andre ter Stegen to push the ball out for a corner. It lifted an already noisy Stade de Lyon and the place was really jumping when Martin Terrier’s thunderous drive was pushed on to his bar by Marc Andre ter Stegen who then gratefully grabbed the ball as it bounced down and spun backwards towards his goal.

Messi then fired over from Jordi Alba’s cross He was furious at his own inaccuracy. Ousmane Dembele was just as guilty firing into Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes’ legs.

Not all attacks ended in shots. Gerard Pique’s brilliant block tackle on Moussa Dembele came just as he was about to test Ter Stegen. No one was more anxious to score than Luis Suarez who came into the game having gone 23 hours and 38 minutes without a Champions League away goal – giving a whole new meaning to the phrase: we could play all day and still not score.

Leo Dubois chopped Suarez down and he was booked but Lyon kept him and Messi and Dembele at bay until the break.

It was almost Sergio Busquets who broke the deadlock just before the half-time whistle but Jason Denayer blocked with his thigh seconds before time was blown.

Memphis Depay had Lyon’s first shot in the second period just wide of Ter Stegen’s far post. The former Manchester United winger was enjoying the anarchic end-to-end.

Clement Lenglet tried to slow him down with a kick to the back of the calf and was lucky not to be booked. The quality did not always match the energy – one lateral free-kick went long and straight out of play – but his direct running was causing Barcelona all sorts of problems and from one cross Ter Stegen had to scramble the ball away.

Barcelona brought Philippe Coutinho on for Dembele with 25 minutes left. They delayed the change while Sergio Roberto changed bloodstained shirt and shorts after he ran into Dubois’ elbow.

Once on Coutinho might have scored immediately but Suarez got to Alba’s cross before him and, leaning back, hit advertising hoardings behind the goal. Coutinho did get his first shot away with Barcelona’s next attack but Lopes got behind it well.

Alba was next to shoot over. Only after a magnificently weighted pass over the top of Lyon’s defence from Suarez found Messi only for a Lyon to poke the ball clear before he could finish.

He was playing one notch down from genius and that much was evident moments later when he went he shaped to curl a shot left-footed into the far top corner and he sliced it slightly putting it high and wide.

On 89 minutes Messi had a free-kick in a good position for his magic left foot but he sent both the kick and the second shot from the rebound into the wall.

He may still be the difference in this tie but there is very little in it ahead of next month’s second leg.

Naby Keita is still a work in progress but the Liverpool midfielder just needs a big moment

Naby Keita is still a work in progress but the Liverpool midfielder just needs a big moment in a big game to take off after display against Bayern Munich

  • Naby Keita made his a fifth consecutive start against Bayern Munich on Tuesday
  • Keita was in the thick of the action from the outset during the game at Anfield
  • The 24-year-old remains a work in progress but he was always involved

Dominic King for the Daily Mail

The YouTube clip lasts for just 45 seconds. It is from a game in March 2018 when RB Leipzig hosted Bayern Munich and its star is Naby Keita.

You wouldn’t be able to boil a kettle in the time it takes to watch from beginning to end but in those 45 seconds, Liverpool fans were given a glimpse of what Keita – who had been signed the previous August for £52.5million – could potentially bring to their team.

First there is a goal, swept in with his left foot after a surge into the area, that gives RB Leipzig parity; then comes a pass, perfectly delivered into the path of Timo Werner, which secures the winning goal and ensured Keita was on the end of a thunderous ovation.

It is not unfair to say that Keita has not produced anything so dynamic since he arrived on Merseyside. There have been injuries, confidence issues and a lack of rhythm as he has tried to acclimatise to the demands of the Premier League.

Keita has, however, improved over the course of the last month and his reward was a fifth consecutive start, this one coming against a familiar rival; what Jurgen Klopp would have done for the Guinea international to reproduce those heroics in Anfield’s biggest game of the season.

He was substituted early but it was not a performance reflective of a player who was lost in the frenzy. Keita was in the thick of the action from the outset and with the benefit of a kinder bounce here or there, could have left the field a hero.

There is no doubt the 24-year-old remains a work in progress but he was always involved, starting in the 16th minute when he helped the ball along to Sadio Mane but saw the Senegal flyer crash his drive into the advertising hoardings.

A thunderous tackle from the hulking Niklas Sule blocked his way to goal in the 33rd minute and there was another pass in the 53rd minute that was a fraction away from being perfect for Andrew Robertson, as he charged towards goal.

The talent is evidently there. Keita just needs a big moment in a big game to really take off.
