Zinedine Zidane will need convincing to become Chelsea’s new boss

0

[ad_1]

Zinedine Zidane wants to come back to football. There is the managerial legacy of three Champions Leagues in three seasons at Real Madrid that it would be a shame to blight by underachieving elsewhere.

But at 46, and still with a passion for the game, he is not going to live off those extraordinary achievements for the next two decades until he reaches a more fitting retirement age. He wants a role somewhere.

After a relaxing sabbatical, holidaying in the Alps, sightseeing in London and watching his youngest sons play youth football in Madrid he is increasingly ready to come back to the game.

Zinedine Zidane might take some convincing to come out of his sabbatical to manage again

But with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri on the brink, an opening at Stamford Bridge might arise

But with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri on the brink, an opening at Stamford Bridge might arise

It could be that the start of next season is the right time. Chelsea could yet turn out to be the right club. But – as is the way with coaches who have no need to prove anything more in their careers – he is going to take some persuading.

He is not going to need a £200million war chest or a new five-year, £300,000-a-week contract for Eden Hazard. He’s been out of football for a while but he hasn’t been on the moon.

He knows, as most people in football do, that Roman Abramovich’s interest in football and Chelsea is currently at an all-time low – the club’s owner is unlikely to go from not turning up for matches this season, to investing more than he’s ever done, next.

But Chelsea will need to massively improve on last summer’s recruitment. Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Kepa Arrizabalaga might have satisfied Sarri but they will not be enough for Zidane. Sarri was glad to be given the chance to manage a Premier League heavyweight; Zidane doesn’t need anyone to ‘give him a chance’.

If Eden Hazard moves from Chelsea, Zidane would need to bring someone in to replace him

If Eden Hazard moves from Chelsea, Zidane would need to bring someone in to replace him

Sarri was, and maybe still is, so convinced in his own methods that he believes personnel to be secondary. Zidane doesn’t have a ‘method’. There is no ‘Zizouball’.

He will take what quality comes his way. But he will demand quality. A FIFA-imposed ban on transfers would be a serious impediment to hiring him. Although, not, if it was preceded by an appeal that allowed for one summer of big spending.

He will want assurances that the squad gets a major face-lift so he can compete with Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino, who he bumped into at central London restaurant Locanda Locatelli two weeks ago.

Zidane’s pragmatism would take Chelsea in the opposite direction to Sarri – a sort of reverse of the 2011 switch from Carlo Ancelotti to Andre Villas-Boas.

Ancelotti is the coach Zidane most draws from. The only philosophy is to get good players doing what they do best – the system serving the stars of the team not vice-versa.

And if Hazard were not at Chelsea then someone of his style would have to come in to replace him. Zidane had a reasonable relationship with Isco at Real Madrid. He picked him to start last season’s European Cup final ahead of Gareth Bale.

Isco is completely out of favour at Madrid but on Wednesday Diario AS revealed that, despite have barely played this year, he is signing a new sponsorship deal with Adidas – the same brand Zidane represents, and was representing in London when he dined with David Beckham and chatted with Pochettino.

Zidane still lives in Madrid and his youngest sons Theo and Elyaz, 16 and 13 respectively, are still very much in the Real Madrid youth system.

Any move would be a family upheaval but joining the cast of managers in the Premier League is attractive, as is the idea of living in London with his wife Veronique Fernandez.

The biggest factor in him being convinced or otherwise could end up being Abramovich. Were the owner to go to the same lengths he once went to in the, ultimately failed, attempt to bring in Guardiola, Zidane maybe convinced.

If there is no change in the current mood at the club however, then Zidane will not be interested in climbing aboard. He will wait for another offer to come along, knowing that one definitely will.

The biggest factor, however, could be just how heavily pursued he is by Roman Abramovich

Rangers fans left furious as Scottish Cup replay vs Kilmarnock will not be broadcast due to UEFA

Rangers fans left furious as Scottish Cup replay against Kilmarnock will not be broadcast due to a UEFA directive… but similar non-European English and French fixtures WILL be shown live

  • Rangers fans are furious about a global TV blackout on the Scottish Cup replay
  • A UEFA directive prohibits live coverage in competition to Champions League
  • But English and French midweek matches will still be shown by broadcasters
  • Fans can only follow the action with Radio Scotland, who won’t even be at Ibrox

Lindsay Herron For Mailonline

Rangers supporters are furious that there is a global TV blackout on the Scottish Cup replay with Kilmarnock on Wednesday night, when English and French matches will be shown live all over the world.

Premier Sports are abiding by a UEFA directive prohibiting live coverage of games in competition to the Champions League and will show delayed action from 10.10pm.

However, Championship clash Derby v Millwall is going out live on Sky Sports, via the red button and the app, while Paris Saint-Germain v Montpellier in Ligue 1 is live on BT Sports/ESPN – the same company that’s showing Atletico Madrid v Juventus and Schalke v Manchester City.

The PSG clash, rescheduled due to yellow vest troubles in Paris, is also being screened live in over 100 other countries worldwide.

Club channel Rangers TV can’t show the Ibrox action either, with a 24-hour embargo placed on them.

Ironically, the only way fans can follow the action live is to listen to Radio Scotland, who won’t even be at Ibrox due to their long-running dispute and will be commentating off the TV feed from Premier Sports.

Mark Dingwall, who runs fans’ website Follow Follow, said: ‘It seems there is one rule for the larger nations and another for the rest – either that or they simply don’t care.

‘It doesn’t surprise me that the EFL and the French League will happily flout the UEFA directive because even if the national associations are fined, it’s hardly going to hurt them financially.

‘It just makes a mockery of the whole thing.

‘There are thousands of supporters all over the world who are being denied the opportunity of watching live coverage of what has become the most important game of the season.

‘Why should they be prevented from watching the action from Ibrox? It is utterly ridiculous and the UEFA directive should be scrapped.

‘I know that Premier Sports are broadcasting delayed coverage, but RangersTV can’t show anything for 24 hours. It’s crazy.

‘The only way Rangers supporters can get live coverage of the replay with Killie is by listening to Radio Scotland who won’t be at Ibrox but will be commentating off a live feed.

‘How utterly ironic and ridiculous is that?’

Phil Thompson says only Fernandinho can stop Virgil van Dijk winning Player of the Year

Phil Thompson says only one Manchester City player has been as good as Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk this season and backs the Dutchman to win Player of the Year

  • Virgil van Dijk has transformed Liverpool’s defence into the best in the top flight
  • Liverpool have conceded only 15 goals this season in the Premier League
  • Reds legend Phil Thompson believes only Fernandinho can rival the defender

Peter Rutzler For Mailonline

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes only Fernandinho can rival defender Virgil van Dijk for Player of the Year.

The Dutch defender has transformed Jurgen Klopp‘s defence from a porous handicap into an impressive asset this season, with the Reds conceding just 15 times in the Premier League, the lowest of any top flight side.

That defensive revolution at Anfield leaves van Dijk a clear front-runner for this year’s Player of the Year award.

And for Thompson, only Fernandinho, the metronomic midfield sweeper at Manchester City, can rival the former Celtic and Southampton.

‘Nobody has been like Virgil this season and people are talking about him as player of the year,’ Thompson wrote in the Times.

‘It would be great if a defender won that award because it would be some statement.

‘He has rated as a 9/10 each week and, for me, the only one who can come near him for the accolade is Fernandinho at Manchester City.’

Fernandinho’s importance to the blue half of Manchester was highlighted during his absence from the team at the end of last year, when City dropped crucial points to Crystal Palace and Leicester City during the Christmas period.

Since his return normal service has resumed at the Etihad, with City strolling into a Carabao Cup final as well as destroying Chelsea 6-0 in the league.

Van Dijk missed Liverpool’s goalless draw with Bayern Munich during the week as manager Klopp tries to deal with a defensive crisis.

The Dutchman was only suspended however and should return to the starting lineup at Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Sunday.
