Alvaro Morata’s misfortune in front of goal continues as Atletico Madrid striker is denied against Juventus due to VAR review overturning decision

Luke Augustus for MailOnline

Alvaro Morata‘s annus horribilis circa 2018 looks like it has carried on into 2019 as his luck in front of goal continues to desert him.

After 18 unforgettable months at Chelsea, the 26-year-old is now at Atletico Madrid on loan looking to rediscover his goalscoring touch.

And on Wednesday night, it appeared he had done just done that against Juventus in the Champions League last-16 first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The striker thought he had given Atleti the lead midway through the second half with a thunderous header from a Filipe Luis cross.

However, German referee Felix Zwayer overturned his initial decision of letting the goal stand following a VAR review which deemed Morata had fouled Giorgio Chiellini en route to scoring.

The replays suggested it was a dubious decision in favour of the Italian defender as Morata’s emotions went from pure jubliation to pure despair as Zwayer adjudged him to have pushed the Italian.

The chalked-off goal means Morata is now goalless in his four games for Atletico.

Despite his protestations, BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas was adamant that the right call was made.

‘I think it was a spot on decision, if you look at Morata’s face he’s as guilty as they come, he’s looking around thinking “really, you’re going to give me this one?”

‘I don’t think it is soft, I think you underestimate sometimes momentum and when you’re running forward and someone pushes you it doesn’t take a lot to push you out of line,’ he said in his post-match analysis of the match.

‘He’s got that line covered chiellini. Yes he overexaggerates, he buys it very well, but I still think it’s the right decision.’

Morata will look to end his barren on Sunday afternoon when Diego Simeone’s host Villarreal in La Liga.

Brilliant Roy and Root 100s give England win in first ODI vs Windies

0

[ad_1]

It took something special to overshadow a spectacular display from the ‘Universe Boss’ here on Wednesday but England managed it in remarkable fashion by chasing down a record target to win the first one-day international with ease.

Chris Gayle is not one to sell himself short but he lived up to every hyperbolic word he uttered before this series by smashing 12 sixes, four of them flying clean out of this famous Kensington Oval ground, in his 135 as West Indies ran riot against England’s World Cup aspirants.

But they were made to pay for a slow start while Gayle cranked up his creaking 39-year-old body as Jason Roy atoned for dropping him before he had barely got going with an even quicker century of his own.

The result was an entertaining, thoroughly modern run-fest on a road of a Kensington Oval pitch with England making up for a shoddy display in the field by proving they have the firepower to reach just about any 50-over target.

In all West Indies smashed 23 sixes off a shell-shocked and sloppy attack, a one-day international record, in their 360 for eight, with seven balls lost somewhere in Bridgetown, to record their highest one-day score against England and their best in the Caribbean.

But, remarkably, it was not nearly enough as Roy reached three figures off 35 fewer balls than Gayle and then Joe Root led England home and became the fastest Englishman to reach 5,000 one-day runs with the third and perhaps best century of the game.

Eoin Morgan said ‘We’re delighted. I’d like to think we’re improving constantly as we go along, which is a good place to be in for the World Cup.

‘The way we went about the chase – it felt like a 330 chase rather than a 360. You can’t look past the opening partnership. For Jason Roy to play such a commanding role at the top of the order set us up beautifully. He was amazing.’

What a start to the last 50-over series before England must declare their World Cup hand. Firstly there was the unique figure of Gayle who, when speaking here on Sunday, had regaled his audience with a Muhammad Ali style rhetoric in which he called himself ‘The Greatest’ and offered to save the ECB’s beleaguered Hundred competition next year single-handedly.

He did not initially look anything like great on his return to West Indies 50-over side after missing tours of India and Bangladesh before Christmas, starting off with a strike-rate more akin to Geoff Boycott than the self-styled Universe Boss.

And it should have been all over when Gayle had made just nine from his first 36 balls but Roy dropped what should have been a routine catch for a side who aspire to the highest levels of fielding off Liam Plunkett’s third ball.

Earlier Gayle had been typically bombastic as he smashed 135 for the Windies

It still took time for Gayle to warm up as he had made only 21 after facing 50 balls and went to his 50 off 76. But then he went into overdrive, his first six taking him past Shahid Afridi with a record 477 international maximums, as ball after ball disappeared over the Oval’s stands.

When Gayle nudged a single off Chris Woakes to reach a run a ball hundred, sinking to his knees in celebration and seemingly only just being able to get up again, he had faced an astonishing 55 dot balls but had still provided another master-class of six hitting.

England had little answer in the field. This could well be their first choice World Cup side, unless there is a late intervention from a certain Jofra Archer, but however strong England’s batting is, there remain concerns about their attack. If this carries on then the Barbadian-born Archer will have the reputation of Marshall, Holding and Garner combined by the end of this series.

Mark Wood was again quick, particularly in his first spell when he touched 91 miles per hour, but later went for 22 off one over with Gayle hitting him for successive sixes, while Plunkett disappeared for nine an over from his six overs.

Joe Root also posted a century as England drew first blood with a six wicket victory

Joe Root also posted a century as England drew first blood with a six wicket victory

Joe Root also posted a century as England drew first blood with a six wicket victory

Moeen Ali was smashed for four sixes in one over, twice by Gayle and twice by Darren Bravo, who hit four sixes of his own, before Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid, mysteriously held back until the 34thover, picked up three last wickets apiece to at least stop West Indies reaching 400. Even that might not have been enough.

And Stokes will have enjoyed snaring Carlos Brathwaite, the man who hit him for four successive sixes to snatch the 2016 World Twenty20 title out of England’s hands, for just three while West Indies were setting England a record-breaking run-chase.

But how costly those dot balls, 64 of them in all in Gayle’s innings, were to prove. Roy had to ride his luck, being dropped no fewer than four times, but here was another display of the power than could catapult him into the Ashes this summer as well as launch England’s World Cup challenge.

And when he finally was caught at short third man West Indies attack was rendered just as ineffectual as England’s, with Root also taking advantage of careless fielding, Ashley Nurse in particular having a shocker, to guide England home.

Root, who was dismissed for 102 with just one run needed, added 116 with captain Morgan as England reached the fourth highest successful run chase in one-day international history with eight balls to spare. If they can only sort out the bowling they really will be dangerous.

Brendan Rodgers urges Celtic to fight until the end against Valencia in Europa League clash

‘If we are going to go out, let’s give it our best shot’: Brendan Rodgers urges Celtic to fight until the end against Valencia in Europa League clash

  • Brendan Rodgers urges Celtic to give their all against Valencia in Europa League
  • Rodgers’ side go to the Mestalla trailing 2-0 from the first leg of the tie
  • Rodgers believes getting the first goal can change the dynamic of the game

John Mcgarry for MailOnline

Brendan Rodgers has told his players to be prepared to die with their boots on against Valencia.

Two-goals down to Valencia from the first leg in Glasgow, Celtic face a monumental task to turn this Europa League tie on its head.

Taking hope from the way his side started the game last week, Rodgers feels getting the first goal in the Mestalla will change the dynamic of the game.

Readying himself for the possibility of an exit at the first knock-out round, though, the Celtic manager is adamant that the attitude of his players in that eventuality will still be hugely important.

Asked what his last words will be to his players, Rodgers said: ‘I’ll ask them if we have this shot at getting through, do they believe they can win? If they do, no matter how tentative it is, if it’s a yes – then let’s give it everything. Let’s fight, let’s tackle, let’s play.

‘If we are going to go out, let’s give it our best shot. That’s what the players do.’

Celtic have never won a competitive game in Spain and even a one-goal victory on Thursday night would not be enough to see them through on aggregate.

Rodgers welcomes Jozo Simunovic back into the fold against Valencia

Rodgers welcomes Jozo Simunovic back into the fold against Valencia

Rodgers welcomes Jozo Simunovic back into the fold against Valencia

Rodgers, who welcomes Jozo Simunovic back into the fold, believes the chance to create history should be all the incentive his players need.

‘It would,’ he added. ‘It’s a great challenge for us. I saw enough in the game last week in terms of we started the game well, we lost our way a wee bit after 25 minutes and we gave them confidence in the game and the first goal is obviously critical.

‘If you’re a team playing away from home and you get that first goal in the away stadium that really calms you down and it allows you to relax and play your football. And then obviously literally five minutes after half time we concede a second one and 2-0 sort of breaks our rhythm a bit and then they get comfort and it was disappointing for us then.

‘But I think we come into the game, like we’ve done over the past two and a half years, whenever we’ve had disappointing results or performances, or both, we’ve always tried to then respond and we did that at the weekend in a tough league game and we carry the confidence now to go again in this.

‘We accept the challenge, we know the perception will be that we’re out, but it’s never what drives me with the team. It’s always been that we have to find hope in relation to the games that we have and if we believe that we can do it, even if it’s a tentative belief, if it’s a yes you have to go for it.

Rodgers believes that Celtic have a chance of prevailing if they get the first goal

Rodgers believes that Celtic have a chance of prevailing if they get the first goal

‘You have to play with energy and give everything and fight to the very end.. If we can get the first goal then who knows?’

Celtic reserved their best display of the group stage to defeat RB Leipzig in Glasgow but failed to follow that up against the Spaniards.

Insisting his players will be driven by a desire to right the sense of injustice they feel, Rodgers said: ‘I just think we recognise we didn’t play well enough. We made mistakes. I think we know you have to really concentrate.. These are some of the things we’ve shown over the last week or so in terms of our video with the players.

‘We’ve shown them where we were good in the game, the areas where we were good, sometimes that gets lost in the result.

‘But there were parts of the game, we started with real confidence and stability in the game, we had a little period of six or seven minutes where we gave the ball away cheaply and we learned you can’t do that at this level against good players who play well and can create. Ultimately it’s about concentration at this level.’

‘He’s too good… he’s got that Thierry Henry kind of feel’: Rio Ferdinand and other BT pundits laud Leroy Sane after brilliant free kick helps Manchester City come from behind to beat Schalke

  • Manchester City came from behind to beat Schalke 3-2 in Champions League

  • BT pundits Rio Ferdinand and Joleon Lescott lauded the German winger’s impact

Leroy Sane has been compared to Thierry Henry after he came on to score a spectacular free kick as 10-man Manchester City came from behind to beat Schalke 3-2 on Wednesday.

The German winger replaced Sergio Aguero with 12 minutes left in the second half before he equalised with a superbly hit free kick to start the visitors’ late comeback.

Sane continued to dazzle during his short cameo as he caused problems for his former employers before Raheem Sterling burst through to score the winning goal in the first leg of the last 16 clash.

BT pundits Rio Ferdinand and Joleon Lescott raved about his performance following City’s impressive win as they analysed his short time on the pitch.

Ferdinand said after the game: ‘He’s [Sane] too good – he’s a beautiful footballer, poetry in motion.

‘He’s a fantastic player. He’s so smooth, silky in the way he plays. He made a little nutmeg in the game and we were sitting here giggling, but he’s got the end product, he’s a killer in that sense of the game.’

Former City defender Lescott was also full of praise for the German and even compared Sane to Arsenal legend Henry.

Lescott said: ‘He’s got that Thierry Henry kind of feel… I thought it was a bit strange to take off [Sergio] Aguero when you’re behind, but Pep Guardiola knew what he was doing.’

Owen Hargreaves was impressed with how consistent Sane was getting when taking free kicks.

He said: ‘If you take free kicks, you have a picture in your mind where it’s going to go. I don’t think I’ve seen him miss a free kick, that’s how good he’s getting.’

Sane, who started his career at Schalke, refused to celebrate his spectacular equaliser and even admitted that he was ‘sad’ for the home support following the result.

The 23-year-old said: ‘The fans are really loud, the team is following them, and we knew it would be really tough here. I think you can see it’s a lot.

‘I was a little bit sad for Schalke, especially for the fans, because the atmosphere was amazing. I think Schalke played really well. The way they defended made it really difficult for us.’

The Germany international endeared himself to his former club further as he handed one tearful Schalke supporter his shirt after the final whistle.

Warren Gatland picks Gareth Anscombe for Wales against England in Six Nations clash

Warren Gatland throws Gareth Anscombe into the cauldron for Wales in Six Nations clash against England

  • Gareth Anscombe has beaten Dan Biggar in race for fly-half spot against England
  • Warren Gatland has given each player one start so far this Six Nations campaign
  • There is likely to be no place in the matchday XV for full-back Leigh Halfpenny
  • England will opt for Jack Nowell on the wing in place of the injured Chris Ashton

and
Chris Foy for the Daily Mail

Gareth Anscombe has won the race for No 10 and will start at fly-half ahead of Dan Biggar against England on Saturday.

Kiwi-convert Anscombe, 27, began against France but Biggar played against Italy. The latter picked up a knee knock in that game and was withdrawn as a precaution in the first half for his club Northampton last weekend, but is likely to be on the bench when Warren Gatland names his team on Thursday lunchtime for the crucial Six Nations clash.

It is understood there will be no place in the 23-man squad for Leigh Halfpenny. The full-back has not played for more than three months after lingering concussion problems, having been knocked out against Australia in November.

Despite returning to Wales training, he is not ready for a full-blooded return in Cardiff. Wales look set to continue with the back-three that served them well in Paris — with full-back Liam Williams partnering Josh Adams and George North on the wings.

Jack Nowell is destined to reclaim his England starting place when Eddie Jones names his line-up this morning. The Exeter wing will replace Chris Ashton, who has a calf strain.

The other enforced change will see Nowell’s Chiefs team-mate Ben Moon start at loosehead prop after Mako Vunipola was ruled out for the rest of the campaign with an ankle injury.

Worcester centre Ben Te’o is likely to be left out of the 23, opening the way for Bath wing Joe Cokanasiga to make a Test comeback on the bench after missing two months with a knee injury.
