‘He has that side to him… being angry makes him more dangerous’: Joe Joyce warns Jarrell Miller against provoking Anthony Joshua after American shoved rival at press conference

  • Joyce warned Jarrell Miller that angering Anthony Joshua isn’t the best tactic
  • Joshua and Miller face off on June 1 with their first press conference a fiery affair
  • Miller shoved Joshua before referring to the Watford-born fighter as ‘Uncle Tom’

British heavyweight Joe Joyce has warned Jarrell Miller that antagonising Anthony Joshua is not the best tactic ahead of their world title bout.

Miller and Joshua face off at Madison Square Gardens on June 1, with their first press conference on Tuesday in New York proving to be a fiery affair.

New York native Miller heavily shoved Joshua as they faced off, before referring to the Watford-born fighter as an ‘Uncle Tom’, among other insults.

The usually calm Joshua dropped his mask and promised to knock Miller ‘the f*** out’ – and Joyce, who was a team mate of Joshua in the GB Olympic boxing team and has sparred with him in training camps, says the American has made a mistake by angering the Briton.

Joyce, 33, said: ‘It got a bit tasty. It’s in him, he used to be a bouncer and a bit of a street kid so he has that side to him and it just came out.

‘Being angry makes him even more dangerous, especially when he starts swinging those big arms around, but it has got people talking about his New York debut, it is going to be a good fight.

‘His image has been polished but this has got people talking and the US boxing fans will be out in force.

‘I never really saw the street-kid side to him when he were in training, he was usually always laughing and joking, he is a cool guy. but if you push the wrong with him or he hasn’t eaten and is a bit hungry then maybe he gets like that. Don’t we all.’

Joyce was speaking after his Wednesday press conference ahead of fighting Bermane Stiverne on Saturday at the O2 – which also descended into chaos.

Stiverne boiled over after Joyce’s manager Sam Jones accused him of backing out of a previous sparring session. The Haiti heavyweight had to be restrained by security officials as he threatened to ‘slap the s*** out’ of Jones.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola hails video technology despite spot-kick controversy in win over Schalke

‘I’m a big fan of VAR… it’s a penalty’: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hails video technology despite spot-kick controversy in win over Schalke

  • Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hailed the impact of new video technology
  • In Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Schalke, VAR was used to award the hosts a penalty
  • But Guardiola, who claimed the call was correct, had no complaints with its use
  • He labels himself as a ‘big fan’ and says the technology needs time to develop
  • REPORT: Raheem Sterling bags last-gasp winner for Guardiola’s City side

Jack Gaughan for the Daily Mail

Raheem Sterling rescued 10-man Manchester City with a stoppage-time winner after a VAR fiasco had threatened to derail their Champions League ambitions at Schalke.

Leroy Sane’s sumptuous free-kick levelled for City with five minutes left before Sterling kept his cool to strike at the death after Nicolas Otamendi had been sent off for a second yellow card.

Pep Guardiola surprisingly spoke up for VAR even after the award of two controversial first-half penalties, the first of which when Otamendi was adjudged to have handled in the box with City one goal up.

VAR spent four minutes deliberating the incident, with a malfunctioning pitchside monitor adding to the feeling of farce. Guardiola, however, is a staunch believer in the technology.

‘I’m a big fan of VAR,’ the City manager said. ‘It’s a penalty. If we had VAR last season against Liverpool then it would’ve all changed.

‘When a new system starts it’s like a manager. You arrive and expect to win every game 6-0. VAR needs time, they will improve. The referee told me the machine was broken. I support the initiative. The referees need help and that is VAR’s intention.’

Fernandinho would concede another penalty before half-time when he grappled with Salif Sane and is now also suspended alongside Otamendi for the second leg after the subsequent yellow card.

Guardiola did suggest that the Schalke defender was offside when he was fouled. ‘Maybe it’s offside. The VAR maybe has to look better,’ Guardiola added.

‘The penalties were penalties. And the red card is a red card. We gave away the goals and the red card. We gave them options to be in the game. Maybe it’ll end up helping us.

‘We would’ve been depressed but the result is incredible. If you gave me this result before then I say: ‘Where do I sign?’ The opponents didn’t do too much, even if they have quality to cause problems.’

Schalke manager Domenico Tedesco said: ‘We are very disappointed with the result, we had a little bit of luck on our side.

‘It was definitely too long for the VAR decision to be made, but the captains were called to the referee who explained the situation and it was a technical problem. This can happen.’

Guardiola claimed the way in which City roared back late on will stand them in good stead in a pursuit of a European title. He did also concede that they need to improve – even though the performance ‘delighted’ the Catalan.

‘The way they reacted at 2-1 shows me a lot,’ he said. ‘I have no doubts about that. But you have to be conscious that it is not enough. Try to go, show me how good you are.

‘Maybe in the future, for Chelsea on Sunday in the final, maybe it will help us. You have to live these situations in these competitions.

‘Basle was fake at this stage last year, 4-0 away, that is not the reality. Maybe we didn’t realise what you need to do to win the games in these competitions.

‘We came away and scored three goals and then reacted with 10 men. We played incredibly well. I’m delighted but it’s not enough.

‘We gifted the goals. If that happens in another stage… important players can’t lose the ball. We are a nice team to watch. We don’t know how far we’ll get. We’re scoring an incredible amount of goals. Schalke were unbeaten.’

Guardiola also implored the City supporters – the majority of whom loathe this competition – to turn up the noise at the Etihad for the second leg.

‘We need them in the competition,’ he said. ‘I remember at Bayern, these kind of games means a lot.

‘We cannot do it without the fans. To get to the quarters is still open. We need the support in three weeks. They can come and support like they did against Liverpool. We need it.’

Sunil Kaikini to leave role as head of international broadcasting at the Premier League as organisation suffers another blow following the departure of chief executive Richard Scudamore

  • Head of international broadcasting Sunil Kaikini will leave the Premier League
  • Kaikini will join Pitch International as their managing director of football
  • This is another blow to the Premier League after loss of Richard Scudamore

Matt Lawton For Mail Online

The Premier League have lost another major figure in their organisation with the departure of their head of international broadcasting, Sunil Kaikini.

With the Premier League still searching for a new chief executive following the resignation of Richard Scudamore, Kaikini’s decision to become the new managing director of football at leading sporting marketing agency Pitch International represents a significant blow to the organisation.

Kaikini worked closely with Scudamore in pursuing overseas right deals in his eight years at the Premier League.

In a statement issued yesterday omitted any reference to his former boss.

‘I have spent eight brilliant years at the Premier League, a fantastic organisation which continues to go from strength to strength,’ said Kaikini.

‘I would like to place on record my thanks to Paul Molnar and the rest of the broadcast team for all their support.’

Steve Clarke hits out at sectarian abuse after his Kilmarnock side are beaten 5-0 at Rangers

‘To call me a Fenian b******, come on. Where are we living? The Dark Ages?’: Steve Clarke hits out at sectarian abuse after his Kilmarnock side are beaten 5-0 at Rangers

  • Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke condemned sectarian abuse in defeat by Rangers
  • Clarke accused those home supporters chanting of living ‘in the Dark Ages’
  • Livid after the defeat, Clarke also described referee Alan Muir as a ‘joke’

Brian Marjoribanks For The Scottish Daily Mail

Steve Clarke was left seething on Wednesday night as he launched a verbal attack on ‘joke’ referee Alan Muir and then hit out at Rangers fans after claiming he was the victim of sectarian chanting during a heavy Scottish Cup defeat at Ibrox.

Alfredo Morelos netted four goals and Andy Halliday the other as Kilmarnock were swept aside by Steven Gerrard’s side in a fifth-round replay to set up a pulsating quarter-final with Aberdeen.

But Rugby Park boss Clarke insisted his side should have had a penalty in the opening moments with the game at 0-0 when Eamonn Brophy was hauled back in the box by Joe Worrall. And referee Muir left the visitors further incensed when he red-carded Killie keeper Daniel Bachmann for raising his arms to Glen Kamara.

Clarke then gestured sarcastically to Rangers fans as they branded him a ‘sad fenian b*****d’ towards the end of the match.

The Killie boss revealed he had been approached over becoming the manager at Rangers prior to Gerrard’s appointment – and had been assured by the Ibrox club that sectarianism was a thing of the past.

In an astonishing outburst, Clarke said sarcastically: ‘It’s nice being back in the west of Scotland – really nice.

‘When I was approached by Rangers about taking over the job here I was assured: “Nah, we didn’t have that in the west of Scotland anymore. It has gone..” Hahaha!

‘They can call me a b****d or w****r but to call me a fenian b*****d? Come on! We’re living in the dark ages. They’re not allowed to call my assistant a black ‘b’ but they can call me a fenian b*****d? Is that correct? What are we doing in Scotland?

‘I wake up every morning and I thank Chelsea for taking me away from the west of Scotland. My children and grandchildren have nothing to do this with this, thankfully.’

Clarke also blamed referee Muir for ruining Kilmarnock’s chance of reaching a quarter final tie with Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

‘It’s the story of the match,’ he seethed. ‘If the penalty had been given in the first two minutes it would have been different.

‘The red card is a joke – a joke! The goalie just lifted his arms. Every goalie does that every week. It’s embarrassing. If that’s the standards we might as well go home. Why speak about it? It’s every week, every other week.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard looked to steer clear of controversy as he hailed his players

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard looked to steer clear of controversy as he hailed his players

‘You’ll probably write: “Morelos scored four goals” but the officials decided this game. It’s embarrassing!

‘Am I talking about decisions going against Kilmarnock? I’m talking in general. There are bad decisions. All we talk about is our refs. How can I talk about football tonight?

It doesn’t matter when it comes – a penalty is a penalty. Thirty seconds in or 30 seconds into injury time – it’s a penalty so just give it!’

Rangers boss Gerrard, meanwhile, hailed four-goal Morelos after the Colombian returned from his latest suspension to inspire Rangers.

Gerrard, whose side set up a quarter-final tie at Aberdeen next month, said: ‘It was good to have Alfredo back. He showed his importance to the team and his quality. They were fantastic goals and that’s why he’s been sorely missed on occasions.

‘When he’s not been available we’ve sometimes not had that same threat.

‘I felt we were a lot better than we were at the weekend. The fans and myself got the reaction we were looking for tonight. The players won the fans back over after the weekend. People will talk about the advantage but I thought we were super when it was 11 v 11.

‘We got in front and I thought we built on that lead. When the ref sent off the Kilmarnock keeper we never rested on our laurels.

‘We kept going all the way and that’s what pleased me the most tonight.

‘The weekend was flat and predictable with no creativity but we looked like a Rangers team tonight.

‘But, for me, you have to approach every game with that same mentality. That’s when you can go on a runs of games to be successful.’ Gerrard did not agree with Killie boss Clarke that Brophy should have had a penalty at 0-0 after being hauled back by Worrall in the box.

‘I think Kilmarnock are entitled to have an opinion,’ he said.

‘But I actually thought it was offside before that. Joe’s hand did go across the player but as strong as Brophy is I’m not sure he should go down, so it’s debatable.’

A Rangers spokesperson said: ‘Rangers Football Club wishes to make it clear unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated at Ibrox.

‘Everything possible will continue to be done to eradicate this kind of behaviour.’
