Liverpool stars arrive at Melwood for final preparations ahead of crucial clash with Manchester United as Jurgen Klopp’s side aim to take a major step towards Premier League title

  • Liverpool’s squad arrived at their Melwood base for final preparations ahead of their crunch Premier League trip to Manchester United on Sunday
  • Jurgen Klopp’s side will return to the top with a draw or win at Old Trafford
  • Title rivals Manchester City are in Carabao Cup final action against Chelsea

Adam Shergold for MailOnline

It is usually one of the defining games of the season and Sunday’s clash between old rivals Liverpool and Manchester United will be no exception.

With Liverpool aiming to end their 29-year wait for a league title, they know they can afford no slip-ups at Old Trafford in one of the season’s most eagerly-anticipated matches.

Liverpool will move back ahead of title rivals Manchester City – who are otherwise engaged with the Carabao Cup final – with a point or more.

Their players arrived at the Melwood training ground on Saturday afternoon as they make final preparations for the short trip over to Manchester.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be boosted by the return of key defender Virgil van Dijk, who was suspended for their midweek Champions League draw against Bayern Munich.

It eases a defensive crisis with Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez currently on the sidelines.

There is also hope that Xherdan Shaqiri’s abdominal strain has eased to the point that he will make at least the bench at Old Trafford.

Rhian Brewster (ankle) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee) are both making progress after long-term injuries but neither is in contention to return this weekend.

Forward Sadio Mane struck an optimistic tone ahead of the north-west derby despite the rejuvenation of United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It was United’s 3-1 loss at Anfield back in December that led to the sacking of manager Jose Mourinho and his replacement with the Norwegian on an interim basis.

United are unbeaten in domestic competition under Solskjaer and enter the match full of confidence after Monday’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in the fifth-round of the FA Cup.

‘Everybody knows it is a derby and against United it is always tough, but we are confident and think we can do it,’ he told Liverpool’s official website.

Sevilla 2-4 Barcelona: Lionel Messi hat-trick sees Barcelona win

0

[ad_1]

On 22 minutes Lionel Messi gave the ball away and Sevilla scored to make it 1-0. How did he make up for his mistake? He scored a hat-trick and won the game almost single-handed for Barcelona.

Barcelona have scored 65 goals this season in La Liga and Messi has scored 25 of them. They rely on him more than ever. Without him at the Sanchez Pizjuan Sevilla would have clipped Barcelona’s wings and closed the gap at the top. Thanks to Messi the leaders are flying higher than ever.

The Sevilla opener came on 22 minutes and it was Messi who gave the ball away in his own half. In a flash – thanks to Quincy Promes’ quick pass to Wissam Ben Yedder – Sevilla were attacking Barcelona with a three against two situation in their favour.

Ben Yedder carried the ball to the edge of the area and it was 33-year-old Jesus Navas, who had sprinted 60 yards to join the attack, who arrived to shoot past Marc Andre ter Stegen to make it 1-0.

Gerard Pique was furious with the way the defence had been left exposed and with the way the ball had been lost and not recovered.

Messi, one of the main culprits made amends spectacularly, first in just four minutes with the equaliser.

Luis Suarez played the ball out to Ivan Rakitic and when he crossed left-footed, Messi volleyed left-footed past Tomas Vaclik.

Sevilla’s confidence was not dented and Ben Yedder flicked the ball up over Gerard Pique’s head on the edge of the penalty area. He pulled the forward back and was yellow carded.

Three minutes before the break Sevilla took the lead again. A Ter Stegen clearance went straight to Ever Banega and he got Sevilla moving quickly down the right. Pablo Sarrabia raced to the byline and when he pulled the ball back it was defender Gabriel Mercado who put Sevilla 2-1 up.

It was a measure of Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde’s concern that he made two changes at half time bringing on Ousmane Dembele and Sergio Roberto for Arturo Vidal and Nelson Semedo.

Barcelona should have been level on 53 minutes when Messi found Suarez and he crossed for Dembele but with only the goalkeeper to beat he miskicked his chance wide.

With Barcelona’s next attack Simon Kjaer slid in on Suarez missed the ball and clipped his ankle. The officials – VAR included – got it all wrong not giving a penalty and giving a corner even though it had been Suarez who had poked the ball out of play.

Injuries had forced Sevilla to make three changes before the hour but still they were not conceding clear-cut chances. But Messi doesn’t need clear-cut chances. He just needs a pass to his feet when he takes up a position on the edge of the area. Dembele delivered the assist and he controlled and shot with his ‘weaker’ right foot past Vaclik for the 2-2.

Again from the edge of the area, and this time with his left foot, Messi nearly scored Barcelona’s third but this time Vaclik tipped the shot over. It didn’t take long for him to go one better.

Suarez’s shot was saved on 67 minutes and Messi was on the spot to gently lift the ball over the diving Vaclik to win the game for Barcelona and take them a giant step closer to winning the league. This was one of those fixtures their rivals hoped they would lose. Without Messi’s hat-trick they may well have, instead they are 10 points clear.

Messi even had time to tee-up Suraez for 4-1 with his last kick sending the Uruguayan clear to lob Vaclik.

Bournemouth 1-1 Wolves: Joshua King scores and misses a penalty late on

[ad_1]

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo experienced the full range of emotions at the Vitality Stadium.

There was fury, when Bournemouth were awarded a debatable penalty after an apparent dive. Disbelief, when Wolves were not awarded their own following a blatant handball.

Relief, when referee Roger East finally did point to the spot in the 83rd minute and it became 1-1. Then elation, when Bournemouth’s Joshua King missed another penalty in the 84th.

Days as a referee don’t get much more hectic than this, and East may need to pour himself a rather large brandy if he plans to watch Match of the Day this evening.

What an unusual afternoon of football this was, from the dubious decisions to the moment the Vitality sprinklers interrupted play in stoppage time. Really, a draw felt like a fair result.

There were short sleeves and sunglasses galore in the stands at the Vitality Stadium. A short drive away, by Bournemouth beach, surfers took advantage of the South Coast sunshine.

Really, they should have been redirected here, because Wolves treated us to wave after wave of attacks at the start of this match. Trouble is, they could not make any count.

Bournemouth had barely had a sniff but in the 14th minute, they took the lead. King got the goal but, as far as Wolves fans are concerned, referee East earned an assist.

King went down in the area after a challenge by Joao Moutinho. Wolves were furious. They felt the striker dived, and VAR might have agreed with them, but the spot-kick stood.

King dispatched it, finding the bottom-right corner to score his fourth goal in five games, and Bournemouth led 1-0.

It got worse for Wolves in the 20th minute. Chris Mepham made a mess of trying to chest the ball down and it led to the most blatant handball you will see in a box this weekend.

East gave nothing and Wolves, once again, were outraged.

Diogo Jota was booked for his protests while Santo paced on the touchline, seemingly smiling in a bemused, confused, funny-old-game sort of way.

Wolves’ supporters weren’t laughing. They felt they had fallen victim to a double-whammy of poor decisions – a penalty wrongly given against them, and an obvious one not awarded for them.

‘You’re not fit to referee,’ was their song of choice and they booed him off at the break.

At the start of the second half, Moutinho swung in a corner and Leander Dendoncker directed a header towards goal, forcing Artur Boruc into tipping over.

From the subsequent corner, Willy Boly saw a header of his own land on the roof of the net. Wolves were asking questions of Bournemouth.

Dominic Solanke, making his home debut, should have marked the occasion with a goal before the hour mark. He was one on one but Rui Patricio managed to produce a low save.

It looked the ball was still skidding in but Ryan Bennett got back to clear off the line.

Santo was not happy with how they conceded that chance – it came after an awful clearance by Patricio – and the Wolves boss gave his water bottle a seeing-to.

In the 70th minute, Moutinho was given a whack in the face by Jefferson Lerma. A yellow was shown and the away fans sang: ‘If that was us, you’d send him off.’

It was Lerma’s 10th booking of the season and he will now miss Bournemouth’s next two fixtures – away at Arsenal and home to Manchester City.

It was that time of the game. Wolves were chasing the leveller, Bournemouth were waiting for their chances to counter. Clever footwork from Jordon Ibe saw him cut on to his left foot and fire a shot against the crossbar.

In the 83rd minute, Wolves were handed their lifeline by the man they had been branding their enemy all evening. East pointed to the penalty spot when Adam Smith felled Matt Doherty from behind. With a drop of the shoulder during his run-up, Raul Jimenez coolly put it away.

There was still time for further drama. Wolves substitute Ivan Cavaleiro committed a foul on Ryan Fraser and East lifted the whistle to his mouth. Penalty, he said, but replays showed the infringement occurred outside of the box.

King took it, went for the right corner again, but this time missed. The ball kissed the post and went wide. Justice was served, as far as Wolves were concerned.

In stoppage time, a malfunction saw the sprinklers emerge from the turf at the Vitality and start showering the players. The game only had a minute to go, and East blew his whistle.

An exhausting afternoon for all involved, from the referee to the managers to those in the stands, and a point apiece for the efforts of the players.

Le chemin reste long.

[ad_1]

Philippe Hao Thyn Voon
