  • Everton, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are monitoring Wan-Bissaka

Arsenal are leading the race for Aaron Wan-Bissaka but must pay at least £40million if they are to sign the Crystal Palace defender.

The 21-year-old has produced some excellent performances for Palace this season and has attracted interest from high-profile clubs.

As reported by The Sun, Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has been impressed by Wan-Bissaka.

Everton are also interested in the England Under-21 international, while Manchester City and Bayern Munich have also been monitoring Wan-Bissaka.

Arsenal can already call upon Hector Bellerin, but their alternative options for the Spaniard, who is out with a long-term knee injury, leave a lot to be desired.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA’S RECORD THIS SEASON

Premier League: 25 appearances

Carabao Cup: Three appearances

Total: 28 appearances

Stephan Lichsteiner is 35 years old and has struggled to cope with the pace and intensity of the Premier League, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles is better suited to playing in central-midfielder or as a winger and Carl Jenkinson has been used sparingly.

Wan-Bissaka broke into the Palace side in the second half of last season and has proceeded to make 35 appearances.

The defender missed Palace’s 4-1 victory over Leicester on Saturday due to injury.

Manchester City’s stars were in good spirits as they arrived in London ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea.

City are seeking to retain the trophy and striker Gabriel Jesus certainly seemed in an upbeat mood prior to the game.

Winger Leroy Sane, who scored against Schalke in the Champions League in midweek, was also spotted arriving along with Ilkay Gundogan and Fabian Delph.

City, who are still in contention to win the quadruple, thrashed Chelsea 6-0 in the Premier League earlier this month.

Pep Guardiola’s team have been hugely impressive again this season and will be aiming for more glory at Wembley.

City are currently top of the Premier League table and are level on points with Liverpool, although they have played a game more than the Reds.

They also beat Schalke 3-2 away in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie and are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they will travel to face Swansea.

Dan Evans continues comeback by defeating John Isner to reach ATP Delray Beach Open final

Dan Evans continues comeback by defeating John Isner to reach ATP Delray Beach Open final

  • Dan Evans beat World No 9 John Isner 3-6 6-2 6-3 in Delray Beach semi-final
  • He will rise to at least World No 105 after making second ATP final of his career
  • British No 3 will play winner of Radu Albot against McKenzie MacDonald

Mike Dickson for MailOnline

The startling resurrection of Dan Evans’s career continued on Saturday when he toppled American number one John Isner to reach the second ATP final of his career.

The 28 year-old Midlander was giving away a foot in height but his superior skill saw him win 3-6 6-2 6-3 and make the championship match at the Delray Beach Open in Florida.

Evans was left awaiting the winner of Moldova’s Radu Albot and American McKenzie MacDonald. Both are ranked in the eighties and eminently beatable.

The GB number three is already assured a new ranking of around 105 which should see him assured of main draw entries into the French Open at Wimbledon. Winning the final would put him up to around 85.

It has been impressive progress for someone who only returned to action in late April last year to start again from scratch after a year’s ban for being found to have taken cocaine.

His previous appearance in a main tour ATP final was in January 2017 when he lost to Gilles Muller at the Sydney International.

He will attempt to follow Kyle Edmund, who in October won the Antwerp Open.

Evans’ campaign at Delray Beach began a week ago in the qualifying event, which he came through as part of a season that has seen him win fifteen matches already.

Currently ranked 148, he was faced with trying to defuse the power serving of World No 9 Isner.

He managed to break his 6′ 10′ opponent twice in the second set and once early on in the decider, holding on comfortably thereafter to register one of the best wins of his career.

Evans said afterwards: ‘I’m moving well, I’m moving pretty good, I think I’m difficult to play. I started to see his serve pretty well.

‘I wouldn’t say I was guessing, but I was sort of anticipating and got it right, other days I could be looking stupid going one way when he puts it another.’

Manchester United‘s players appeared in high spirits as they arrived at the Lowry Hotel in preparation for their Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has earned praise since arriving at the club in December, had a friendly greeting for a member of hotel staff as he made his way into the building.

The rest of the first-team squad followed into the Salford hotel as part of a pre-match routine that dates back before Solskjaer took charge.

Paul Pogba, so key to the club’s recent revival, Jesse Lingard and David De Gea all made their way into the hotel in buoyant mood.

After staying overnight at the Lowry, the players will then make their way to Old Trafford to warm up ahead of the 2:05pm kick-off against their near neighbours and fierce rivals.

Solskjaer will be putting his unbeaten Premier League record on the line, having posted eight wins and one draw since succeeding Jose Mourinho.

He faces his toughest test to date against a team currently unbeaten in five games and tied on points with Manchester City at the top of the table.

The last meeting between these two teams ended in an emphatic 3-1 victory for Liverpool with Sadio Mane and a Xherdan Shqiri double doing the damage after Lingard had levelled for the visitors.

That game also marked the final match of Mourinho’s tenure at Old Trafford.

While that win took Liverpool top of the table, it left Man United stranded in sixth, 11 points from the top four.

Nine games later and it is the hosts in the ascendancy, one point above fifth-placed Arsenal and hosting their rivals with renewed confidence of earning Champions League qualification.

Manchester City’s last Wembley final with Chelsea? A 5-4 defeat day after the derby!

0

[ad_1]

For two clubs as big and successful as Manchester City and Chelsea, one might think that you do not have to go too far back to find the last time these modern football giants met in a cup final.

There have been two Community Shields, this season and in 2012, but unless you’re Jose Mourinho they don’t count. Not when you can make six subs.

Chelsea and City meet Sunday in the Carabao Cup final, the first trophy of the season. For their last — and only — previous meeting in a final we must go back 33 years. March 23, 1986. A nine-goal extravaganza in front of more than 67,000 at Wembley.

Chelsea striker David Speedie celebrates victory in the Full Members’ Cup final in 1986

The competition? The inaugural Full Members’ Cup. Remember that? Also later known as the Simod Cup or the snappily-titled Zenith Data Systems Cup.

Chelsea beat City 5-4, having led 5-1, thanks to a hat-trick from David Speedie, the first at Wembley since Geoff Hurst in 1966, and two from Colin Lee.

Man City forward Mark Lillis thought he had scored a hat-trick of his own as he dragged his team back into contention with two headers and a penalty, even if all eventually in vain.

‘At the end, Speedie came up to me with the ball,’ recalls Lillis. ‘He said: “We’re going to have to cut this ball in half, Mark”. Then the referee came over and told me that my second had gone in off a defender. “You’re joking, ref,” I replied.’

Not only that, the decision also denied Lillis the fastest hat-trick in Wembley history: 84′, 88′, 89′. ‘That’s just what I needed after losing the game,’ he added.

A brief history lesson. In May 1985, English clubs were banned from European competition in the wake of the Heysel Stadium disaster in which 39 fans were killed and 600 injured ahead of the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool, at whose door the blame was laid. The Full Members’ Cup was one of the competitions created by the Football League in response.

‘It was hugely upsetting that some of us had our chances of playing in Europe ruined by hooligans,’ says Pat Nevin, who set up three of Chelsea’s goals at Wembley and would go on to lose two further finals with Everton in 1989 and 1991.

The competition ran until 1992, open to clubs from the top two divisions, although for the first installment did not include the six clubs who would have qualified for Europe that season. They had their own elite tournament. Then only five other top division clubs entered the Full Members’ Cup. There were only 21 in total.

If that was not tinpot enough, the final was played on a Sunday after a full league programme. Chelsea, title contenders, had beaten Southampton while City, a side of scant wealth in those days, had just battled it out in the Manchester Derby, coming from 2-0 down to earn a draw. There was no time for celebration, though.

‘We jumped straight on the bus to Wembley,’ says Lillis. United’s fans threw pies at the team coach as it left Old Trafford.

Manchester-born Lillis, nicknamed Bhuna for his love of curries, thought the team needed a different sort of fuel.

‘There was no food on the bus. One of the players said why don’t we ask the manager Billy McNeil if we can have a drink before bed. “Gaffer, can we have a beer,” I asked. He blew his top. “Who do you think we are, a pub team?” I turned around and everyone had hidden under their seats. It looked like it was just me.’

A Manchester Derby one day, a cup final the next. Imagine that. What about recovery?

‘We all had aches and pains,’ adds Lillis. ‘My hamstring was tight. The physio said he would let the manager know. “No you won’t,” I snapped back. I had an injection to get me through the game.’

Nevin, meanwhile, had a bottle of wine. ‘You went back to our home, had dinner, had a bath, got up and got on it with it.’

The big clubs had turned their backs on the competition and, in the early rounds at least, so did the fans. Man City’s attendance of 4,029 against Leeds in the group stages set a record for the lowest gate at Maine Road. Oddly enough, the players got behind it.

‘It was important,’ says Lillis. ‘The old saying that you play for the badge and the shirt. It was tough that we could not play in Europe as I had worked my way through the leagues and had been a blue since I was born, but we knew Wembley was at the end of it.’

By the time Wembley came around, the fans were well on board. ‘I remember walking out on the turf and looking at those Chelsea fans — boy did they make some noise – and thinking they deserve to be here,’ says Nevin.

‘They took it really seriously and it was a really memorable game. We battered them. There was a bit of mucking about at the end and I think the referee was giving them things. Any Chelsea fan that was there will never forget it.’

How much football has changed over the next three decades. How much those two clubs have changed. Billionaire owners have turned Chelsea and Man City into super powers.

‘No-one could have known what would happen to these clubs,’ says Nevin. ‘It is all about pumping the money in. If you ask me who will be the next club then it could be anyone. There’s plenty of big clubs out there who could be the next big one.’

Is this Tiger’s most amazing shot ever? Woods bends his ball around trees from a bunker during second round at the WGC-Mexico Championship

  • Tiger Woods curled the ball out of the sand on the fairway at the 18th hole
  • It was arguably the shot of the day and Woods went onto birdie the hole to finish
  • Dustin Johnson will take a two-shot lead over Rory McIlroy into the third round

Derek Lawrenson for The Mail on Sunday

Tiger Woods turned his first visit to Mexico into something truly memorable with one of the most extraordinary shots of his career during the second round of the WGC-Mexico Championship.

The fact he bent a nine iron shot from a fairway bunker at least 20 yards in the air to avoid some trees was startling enough — but it was the photographs of him pulling off the stroke that took the breath away, indicating the contortions necessary to execute such a blow.

Perhaps only Seve Ballesteros would ever have attempted such a move — certainly only Seve or Tiger would have pulled it off.

‘That’s Tiger. The Artist. One and only,’ said former US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger. The ball landed 25 feet left of the flag but, such was the vicious sidespin imparted, it bounced sideways towards the hole, finishing 12 feet away on the other side.

‘The ball was sitting down so I knew I couldn’t clear the tree,’ explained Woods. ‘I just opened it  up and gave it as much of a cut  motion as I could — and it worked.’

Woods missed the birdie putt but still carded a useful 66 to move into the top 10 alongside Tyrrell Hatton. The pair were six shots off the halfway lead held by Dustin Johnson, with first-round leader Rory McIlroy two behind after four-putting one green in a 70.

Tommy Fleetwood, who began his second round with back-to-back eagle twos, shot 65 to lie tied fourth with Sergio Garcia, with Ian Poulter tied sixth after two 68s.
