Joe Joyce secured the biggest victory of his professional career by stopping former WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne in six rounds.

The 33-year-old, in his eighth fight, knocked down Stiverne with a big right hand in the third before forcing referee Howard Foster to intervene after two minutes and 20 seconds of the sixth amid another sustained attack.

‘Big respect to Bermane Stiverne, he’s very tough and stuck in there but I guess I was just too much,’ said Joyce.

‘It was about being patient as he’s such a tough guy he took all those shots. There are big things to come.’

Wales’ Lee Selby survived cuts over both eyes to earn a unanimous points decision over Omar Douglas on his move up to the lightweight division.

The 32-year-old had not fought since last May when he lost his IBF featherweight title to Josh Warrington.

Steven Gerrard admits Rafa Benitez’s tough approach worked and he’ll do the same at Rangers

0

[ad_1]

Steven Gerrard’s attitude to calling out players is straightforward. If he and his own dented ego could survive what Rafa Benitez subjected him to on a daily basis at Liverpool in the pursuit of perfection then no Rangers player should be complaining about the demands he’s placing on them right now.

In measured tones in the Ibrox media room, Gerrard gave his most searching and critical dissection of the shortcomings of his Rangers squad last Saturday evening.

That calmness was doubtless no reflection of the mood as condemnation came firing out of the manager’s mouth in the dressing room in the minutes immediately after the 0-0 draw against St Johnstone.

Honesty, of the brutal variety and aired in public, often prompts an outbreak of concern for a manager’s relationship with his dressing room and could turn out to be the quickest way to find a slippery slope leading to the sack.

Gerrard can now acknowledge that, when under the wing of Spanish tactician Benitez, the individual castigation was well intentioned and public team chastisement more often than not cutely timed.

He admits feeling singled out at the time but the pressure, ultimately, worked a treat. So he fully expects to coax positive reactions from the modern-day Rangers player by taking a leaf or two out of Benitez’s approach – and won’t be sparing veterans like former England team-mate Jermain Defoe and his fellow loan signing Steven Davis.

When asked which manager’s honesty he admired, Gerrard explained: ‘Rafa Benitez was like that with me on a daily basis. I probably played the best football of my career under Rafa – I was always searching for that praise and that: “Well done” from him all the time, and that brought the best out of me.

‘He was the one who broke my game down in every little small detail and he’d tell me things on a daily basis. I’d be a bit confused at times, and thinking: “I’m not sure that’s right” but it drove me on to produce my best football.

Gerrard added that he forgives Benitez for his approach and is friends with him

‘Now, that doesn’t work with every player. There are certain guys in the dressing room I need to manage differently. For example, I could have a go at Steven Davis or Jermain Defoe and they’ve been around the game long enough to know it’s not personal, that I’m trying to help get the best out of them and that’s the way it is. Others would be different.

‘I forgive Rafa now we are mates again. I preferred it when a manager was honest with me. Sometimes, if that wasn’t what I wanted to hear, then it was for me to be man enough and accept it. To look at myself, self-reflect and react.

‘We are still in touch. And I can see it from his side now. You think, at the time, when you hear things you don’t want to hear that he’s picking on you. But he was only after the best Steven Gerrard he could get.

KYLE LAFFERTY’S RECORD THIS SEASON

Premiership: 20 games, four goals, one assist

League Cup: Five games, one assist

Europa League (including qualifiers): Five games, one goal

SFA Cup: Two games, one goal

Total: 32 games, six goals, two assists

‘That helped him and Liverpool be more successful. With maturity and experience, you understand it better. I haven’t gone in and destroyed anyone in a one-v-one or made them feel too bad. The most important thing is you get the reaction.

‘If I’m honest with them and it affects them for a couple of hours after, that’s the way it’s going to be.

‘I criticise them to try to help them and make us more consistent, to try to avoid these setbacks we’ve had on too many occasions. I knew they would come but I didn’t expect this many.

‘They’ve been quite damaging in one cup and in the league.’ The Betfred Cup slip, against Aberdeen in the semi-final, will be brought up again in the week ahead as Rangers prepare to travel for a third time this season to Pittodrie for a William Hill Scottish Cup quarter-final next Sunday.

Rangers booked their last-eight place as an Alfredo Morelos-inspired performance in midweek against Kilmarnock proved the perfect tonic to Gerrard’s piercing censure of the team minus their Colombian striker four days earlier.

Morelos was absent, through suspension, as Rangers exited the League Cup to the Dons and Gerrard’s back-up strikers failed to find the net at Rugby Park a fortnight ago then did likewise in that home draw against St Johnstone.

Gerrard believes that forward Kyle Lafferty 'has been unlucky on numerous occasions'

Gerrard believes that forward Kyle Lafferty ‘has been unlucky on numerous occasions’

Kyle Lafferty, the league’s fourth top scorer while at Hearts last season, was meant to be a reliable domestic goals replacement and an occasional big-game starter given his record for netting against Celtic and performances for Northern Ireland.

Instead, the 31-year-old has been a crushing disappointment – scoring only against Cowdenbeath in a run of 19 games stretching back to September. However, Gerrard feels there is no need to panic over that dismal record as Rangers prepare to travel to Hamilton this afternoon.

‘Forwards always need goals,’ stressed Gerrard. ‘I think Kyle has been unlucky on numerous occasions. He scored a perfect goal at Dundee that was ruled offside. Against Hamilton, he had four or five good chances and was unlucky not to score. I am sure when he gets one a few will start flowing.

‘He will say he wants more minutes and I understand that and admire him for that. He needs to keep trying but sometimes he tries too hard. I have done it myself when I haven’t scored for several games, you start shooting from distances that maybe you shouldn’t.

‘You make silly runs because you are desperate to get on the scoresheet. Kyle just has to be Kyle, which is being a handful up front and letting us build off him. I am sure the goal will come.

Gerrard stated that Alfredo Morelos 'gives everyone a lift with the way he plays'

Gerrard stated that Alfredo Morelos 'gives everyone a lift with the way he plays'

Gerrard stated that Alfredo Morelos ‘gives everyone a lift with the way he plays’

‘Alfredo is a big player, he’s important and he gives everyone a lift the way he plays. He does cause problems for opposition teams but it is an opportunity for someone to step up. I think the key against Kilmarnock the other night was the support we got around Alfredo. We got quality into the box and had midfielders who controlled the game.

‘Everyone was on top of their game and that helps Alfredo. He will get the headlines – rightly so. But the quality of service was brilliant. If we can get that type of service into Jermain or Kyle then I’m sure we will score goals.’

A ‘players only’ meeting did the trick in the wake of Gerrard’s hammering to keep Scottish Cup hopes alive. Fresh from applauding their five-star midweek show, the Rangers manager would find those same players taking one of their infuriating steps back in Lanarkshire unpalatable.

Gerrard said: ‘The players knew. The morning after St Johnstone, before I even came across them, they’d already had a chat amongst themselves. They know when they’ve let themselves and the supporters down. They were very keen to put that right against Kilmarnock – and did.

‘At Rangers, you can’t afford to do that or you lose ground or go out of cup competitions. My opinion’s the same in terms of the league, but we need to keep going and see whether we get another opportunity to bite back. That starts at Hamilton.’

Judo – Open international de La Réunion : Pascal Laurent “out”

[ad_1]

Les Mauriciens sont avertis !

‘I’m going for all of the belts. I’m not going to stop at this one now when I’ve come so far,’ Joshua told ESPN.

‘Forget the money, who would I rather fight, Wilder or Fury? I’d rather fight Wilder because it’s an opportunity to fight for the belt.

‘He had the opportunity for April 13, he had already fought Tyson Fury. He had a draw and now he has the opportunity to fight whoever he wants.

Cristiano Ronaldo leads the way as he and Juventus team-mates board train en route to Serie A clash with Bologna

  • Runaway leaders Juventus visit Bologna in Serie A on Sunday afternoon

Juventus travelled east on Saturday ahead of their weekend game at Bologna.

The Turin giants used a train operated by Trenitalia as they made their way to Sunday’s Serie A encounter.

Juve posted a picture to Instagram showing star forward Cristiano Ronaldo stood next to a train and giving a thumbs up gesture to the camera.

Juve have resembled a runaway train in Serie A this season. Their 21 wins and three draws sees them 13 points clear of second-placed Napoli after 24 rounds of games.

But Ronaldo and Co will be looking to bounce back from a rare defeat at Bologna, having lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Juve have already faced Bologna twice this season, winning 2-0 on both occasions — first in Serie A at the Allianz Stadium in September and then again in the Coppa Italia at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara last month.

Eubank Jnr beats DeGale by unanimous points decision after sending rival to canvas twice

0

[ad_1]

Chris Eubank Jnr ushered out the old and brought in his self-proclaimed ‘new generation’ on the back of the two Chunky knock-downs which put an almost certain end to James DeGale’s glittering career.

Son of Eubank goes on from a unanimous decision in a roaring 02 to even bigger fights than this, perhaps against world super-middleweight champion Callum Smith.

DeGale had said he would have to retire if he lost Eubank and after the scores were read out he said: ‘I will go home and talk to my team and my family but I’m pretty sure that’s it. I couldn’t do enough tonight.’

The bitter enmities of the build up evaporated into mutual respect. DeGale offered; ‘Chris is fit and strong and nicked the rounds to win.’

Eubank was more generous, praising his rival for his courage ‘getting up twice to finish the fight and boxing very slickly.’

Those two knock downs each added four points of cement to Junior’s triumph by 114-112, 115-112 and a top heavy 117-109 on one card.

With Eubank also being docked a point for body-slamming DeGale In WWE fashion, I had him winning 114-111.

Both men suffered cut eyes, probably from the head-butts which set the tone of a brawl intermingled with some of DeGale’s technical skills.

Eubank will be all the better for the experience and gather all the more momentum from regaining the IBO super-middleweight tite, albeit that this belt is not universally recognised as a world tile.

George Groves, the third man in the long-running domestic dispute between these Brits, duly presented himself as a ringside commentator.

One of the camps with a fighter on active duty – rumoured more likely to be Team DeGale than Family Eubank – had successfully protested to ITV against the Saint analysing their efforts on air.

When the issue became public Groves was reinstated. There could hardly have been a more qualified assessor given that he had fought and beaten both the combatants, DeGale narrowly early in their careers and Eubank comprehensively before he retired.

Groves had tipped Junior to prevail, on the basis that Chunky had looked a spent force in his two most recent fights. But he had offered the caveat that if DeGale did return close to his best he would be too skilful for Eubank.

Many in the decent sized and boisterous crowd in the 02 shared similarly divided opinion.

Eubank’s legendary father, despite revealing himself petrified that his son might lose, had declared it a 50-50 fight, while the bookies marginally favoured Junior.

That held out the prospect of a close encounter of the thrilling kind.

The main event was delayed, reportedly while awaiting the return of an ambulance from a nearby hospital to be on stand by,

Apparently the emergency vehicle was required to take Bermane Stiverne to hospital immediately after his heavyweight beating by Joe Joyce, the Olympic silver medallist who extended the start of his pro career to eight straight knock-outs.

Safety regulations demand that an ambulance must be in attendance while all boxers are in action.

When they finally came to the ring Eubank hurdled the top rope in his glittering silver outfit. DeGale, in black, settled for a conventional duck between the ropes. Junior drew the jeers, as Chunky enjoyed a rare arrival as the crowd favourite.

A wary opening saw DeGale poach the first round with his southpaw jab but he sustained an immediate cut by the side of his left eye from what looked like a clash of heads.

In the second Euband suffered a matching cut by his right eye and responded angrily, charging forward to land a huge left hook.

DeGale reeled and as Eubank warmed after an early finish DeGale touched down in a corner and was required to take an eight count. DeGale was in trouble again before the end of the round but stayed upright to the bell.

By the third DeGale was making the mistake of being drawn into a Eubank slugfest and was sent crashing back against the ropes by a hefty right hand.

Eubank, who had made the mistake of starting slowly in his two world title losses agains Billy Joe Saunders and George Groves, was in a hurry this time.

DeGale started the fifth at his sharpest yet, landing snap rights and lefts and evading most of the Eubank counters.

Eubank got through with a couple of meaty rights as he came out of counter-attack mode to carry the fight to DeGale and take the sixth round.

Brilliant defensive movement by DeGale frustrated Eubank in the seventh and, as he lunged after his man, he was caught by succession of lefts.

But a late rally may have stolen the round.

DeGale switched his boxing up a gear at the start of the eighth and there was the first hint of the boxing lesson he had promised to administer.

The first signing of Eubank beginning to flag after missing so many punches helped DeGale ease into a semblance of control.

Eubank broke the spell with a huge right in the 10th and for the second time was able to pummel DeGale onto a knee to win potentially decisive two-point margin round.

Eubank poured it on but with DeGale reeling he spoiled it by throwing him to the canvas in the 11th. It was not the first time he had picked DeGale up bodily and referee Michael Alexander rightly deducted a point. It would have been Junior’s round otherwise.

DeGale had to land the punch of a lifetime to steal it but he doesn’t come close. It went the distance but the result is clear for all to see, Jnr has won this. DeGale raised his arm too, but he surely cannot believe he’d won it.
