Kieran Tierney was walking out of the shower when he suffered the serious knee injury which recently kept him out for several months, it has emerged.

The left back needed surgery after damaging knee cartilage towards the end of last season.

Tierney missed Arsenal’s final 10 matches, with Nuno Tavares and even Granit Xhaka deputising as Mikel Arteta’s side missed out on Champions League football.

The Scotland international initially suffered a problem in February before his knee ‘collapsed’ after training a few weeks later. It meant he also missed Scotland’s World Cup play-off against Ukraine, when their hopes of reaching Qatar were dashed.

‘The Wolves game, he had a hyper-extension injury, finished the game, didn’t mention it and then played the next five games with no problems whatsoever,’ Arsenal doctor Gary O’Driscoll revealed in the penultimate episode of All Or Nothing. ‘But he then walked out of the shower on Thursday after training, turned a corner, bent his knee and felt the knee collapse.’

Tierney initially said the injury happened while he was doing leg exercises in the gym.

The left back has struggled with injury while at Arsenal and suffered a setback in his recovery during pre-season.

Tierney has been used a substitute in both of Arsenal’s opening Premier League matches, with new signing Oleksandr Zinchenko starting at left back.

Arteta, meanwhile, revealed he spent months looking for a song Arsenal could play before kick-off to strengthen his side’s connection with supporters.

He eventually found ‘The Angel’ by Louis Dunford, which has been used since last victory over Leeds in May.

‘I’ve been searching for many months for a song, an “anthem” before kick-off, so everybody feels part of what we’re doing, that it has some DNA about our club. I’m going to share it with you,’ he told his players. ‘It’s by Louis Dunford and he’s written a song about the streets of north London… he’s a local lad, he’s a huge arsenal fan. It’s like the sun has come to us, in my opinion, in the right moment to change and go another step at the Emirates because I want you to play in an incredible atmosphere.’

From a small primary school in a sleepy town, my high school experience was a complete change of scene. Most of my classmates came from affluent families of politicians, doctors, businessmen and diplomats. Everyone seemed to wear branded clothing, high end shoes and accessories. Thankfully, we all had the same equalising uniform.

Implement quarantine-free travel soon: Bailey

The Hong Kong Exhibition & Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) welcomes the decision of the HKSAR Government to reduce hotel quarantine for inbound travellers from seven to three days, followed by four days under medical surveillance at home.  Reducing the number of days for hotel quarantine will help ease the burden on Hong Kong residents returning to the city and incoming international travellers.

However, inbound visitors are not allowed to attend any exhibitions held in event premises, e.g. trade fairs, exhibitions, conferences, etc, during the four days of medical surveillance.  The new arrangement and the reduction of number of days for hotel quarantine thus will make no difference for the exhibition industry.

Stuart Bailey, HKECIA Chairman, commented, “While the HKECIA appreciates Government’s direction of relaxing restrictions, our members and the exhibition and convention industry urge the Government to implement quarantine-free travel as soon as possible.  During this interim period, we hope the Government to relax restrictions for business travellers and allow overseas exhibition organisers, exhibitors and buyers with the Amber Code to run and attend exhibitions at event premises with their face masks on and appropriate social distancing and preventive measures.”

With decades of effort by the HKECIA members, Hong Kong has attained its hard-earned reputation as the Trade Fair Capital of Asia.  Some 140 exhibitions were held in a ‘normal’ year at the AsiaWorld-Expo and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, drawing millions of trade buyers and exhibitors from all over the world.  These high-spending business travellers generated tremendous tourism receipts for hotels, restaurants and shops, and hence created tens of thousands of jobs.  The exhibition industry has been an important pillar to Hong Kong’s economy and will be a core engine for the economy rebound.

Hong Kong exhibition industry is beginning to see renowned international trade exhibitions relocating from Hong Kong to destinations with less restrictive policies.  Mega and international exhibitions have a long lead-time and therefore, exhibition organisers urgently need a clear road map to start exhibitor and buyer recruitments.  Otherwise, Hong Kong exhibition industry is unable to bounce back and Hong Kong will lose advantages to other Asian cities.  The exhibition industry and business sector need to be able to freely reconnect with the world to enable the economy to recover.

World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) welcomes the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and its numerous business-smart clean energy tax incentives expansions and extensions.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, says: “The Travel & Tourism sector is a catalyst for meaningful climate action and emissions reduction, as evidenced by our groundbreaking Net Zero Roadmap supporting our sector’s drive toward net zero. This bill will help accelerate our Members’ climate commitments with provisions like the sustainable aviation fuel credit, energy efficient buildings deduction, and zero-emission port equipment and technology investments.

“While these are important building blocks for meaningful change, we call on the U.S. to continue putting climate change front and centre of everything they do to help protect life on our planet. We also urge world leaders to give more support to the global Travel & Tourism sector as it continues its journey towards net zero.”

Dominican Republic sees Strong Tourism Rebound

The post Dominican Republic sees Strong Tourism Rebound appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

As international travel returns in many parts of the world, several United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) members are starting to report strong numbers both for arrivals and tourist spending. This is in spite of the fact the sector continues to face a number of challenges, among them the ongoing pandemic, rising interest rates and cost of living levels, and heightened economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

The Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado, has advised UNWTO of record arrival numbers for April, May, June and July. Notably, arrivals in July were 24% higher than in 2019, putting the country on course for its best year on record, including in terms of sales taxes and income generation.

The Dominican Republic will host the 118th session of the UNWTO Executive Council in the first quarter of 2023. From the Dominican Republic.

UNWTO notes the invaluable contribution of the private sector, as exemplified by the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (ASONAHORES), which is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary.

This growth comes even as destinations across the Dominican Republic continue to miss tourists from Russia and Ukraine, two historically strong source markets. In recognition of its leading status as a resilient destination, the Dominican Republic was the focus of the first UNWTO Investment Guidelines publication, released at the start of 2022. Developed alongside the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic and the national Export and Investment Center (PRODOMINICANA), the new guide provides key insights for investors, with the aim of boosting foreign direct investment in the Caribbean destination.
