“My husband stopped working decades ago. There’s nothing wrong with him, he just refused to work. There was no way I was going to put a begging bowl in my hands or the hands of my daughters– I started working hard. I became a fruit seller and a good one at that– I’ve educated my daughters and gotten them married well.
When everything shut during lockdown was the first time I borrowed money– 10,000 Rs from our neighbours– I had no savings. So the second the market reopened, I was back here selling fruits, but business was very slow. So a week ago, I decided to sell Diyas and that’s what I’m doing from 10am to 10pm. I need to repay my debts and start saving to not live hand to mouth– so if this also doesn’t work I’ll try something else… but I won’t give up. I don’t have dreams, just goals for now. I want to be able to live a life where I don’t have to think about what I’ll gift my daughters when they come home for Diwali. I want to send my granddaughters to good schools. Always remember– strong women make strong families and I am a strong woman, I’ll get through this.”
