Liverpool’s centre-back crisis deepens as Joel Matip is forced off against West Brom after pulling up with an apparent groin problem to add to long-term injuries suffered by Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez

  • Joel Matip pulled up just before the hour after dealing with a West Brom attack
  • The 29-year-old looked to nursing a groin strain when he trudged off the field
  • Rhys Williams came on for the German with 30 minutes of normal time to play
  • Jurgen Klopp has already lost fellow centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez
  • Van Dijk is out until April with a knee issue but Gomez won’t play again this term

Liverpool have yet another centre-back casualty after Joel Matip was replaced around the hour mark against West Brom with an apparent groin issue.

The German had just dealt with a breakaway from Callum Robinson when he alerted the home bench that he was injured, with Rhys Williams coming on in his place.

Liverpool were leading 1-0 at the time thanks to Sadio Mane‘s 12th-minute strike after Matip’s ball over the top of the Baggies defence set the Senegalese star on his way.

However, West Brom defender Semi Ajayi stunningly pulled Sam Allardyce’s men back level when he powered home Matheus Pereira’s corner.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are already missing their first-choice pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, who are out until April and June respectively.

Van Dijk suffered an ACL injury after a wild challenge by Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby, while Gomez was ruled out after sustaining a knee injury on England duty in November.
