Le Morne Cultural landscape, a rugged mountain that juts into the Indian Ocean in the southwest of Mauritius was used as a shelter by runaway slaves, maroons, through the 18th and early years of the 19th centuries.
After a long period of time, slavery was finally abolished under the British rule in 1835 and on the 1st of February each year the annual commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery is celebrated at the International Slave Route Monument which sits at the foot of Le Morne Brabant, across the way of the public beach .
