Patric without any protest quickly jogged off the pitch and down to the dressing room, as Lazio were forced to play the final five minutes of stoppage time with 10 men in search of an equaliser they would fail to find.

The night had started in perfect fashion for Simone Inzaghi’s men, who took the lead following a strike from former Manchester City striker Felipe Caicedo.

But Lecce, who went into the match on the back of six straight defeats, hit back at the very end of the first half through Marco Mancosu, before taking the lead two minutes after half-time through Fabio Lucioni.

The surprise 2-1 defeat for Lazio followed a 3-0 humbling at home by AC Milan, who came from 2-0 down to beat table toppers Juventus 4-2 on Tuesday evening.

It means Lazio remain seven points behind Juventus, having blown the chance to narrow the gap to just four points with seven matches to play.
