Virat Kohli left fuming after being run out in horror mix-up with Ajinkya Rahane – with India captain on course for another century before being dismissed on 74 against Australia during opening day of first Test

Virat Kohli was run out on day one of the first Test against Australia in Adelaide just when he looked like building a mammoth score.

The India captain was on 74 when Ajinkya Rahane turned down his call for a quick single, with Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon removing the bails following Josh Hazlewood’s throw to leave Kohli fuming.

The Aussies then took two more late wickets to leave India, who had been 188 for three before Kohli was out, 233 for six at the close.

Mitchell Starc made a sensational start when he bowled Prithvi Shaw for a second-ball duck. Fellow opener Mayank Agarwal departed similarly to Pat Cummins for 17.

Cheteshwar Pujara dug in alongside Kohli for 160 balls, but Lyon sent him back to the pavilion seven short of 50.

While Kohli was at the crease, the away side looked to be in a healthy position. But after his run-out, Australia soon took the second new ball and Starc had Rahane pinned in front for 42, before Hazlewood claimed Hanuma Vihari for 16, out lbw, to ensure Tim Paine’s side held the upper hand going into day two.
