Virat Kohli’s men had been looking build on a 62-run lead on day three after closing day two on 9-1 in their second innings, but Australia pace duo Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins decimated their batting line-up to bowl them out for 36 in less than two hours of the day-night Test.

Hazlewood took 5 for 8 while fast-bowling partner Cummins recorded figures of 4 for 21, and in one spell when the visitors were on 25 they took four wickets for no runs over 29 balls.

It was also the latter who took the key wicket of captain Kohli to leave India 19 for 6, while experienced batting duo Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane were dismissed for eight-ball and four-ball ducks respectively.

Australia chased down the meagre target of 90 runs for the loss of opener Matthew Wade, who made 33, and Marnus Labuschagne for six to take a 1-0 lead in the series with tests to come in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Moreover, Wade’s opening partner Joe Burns gave his confidence a much-needed boost with an unbeaten 51 after a horror start to the season, including a six to secure the victory, while Steve Smith was also not out as the hosts crossed the finishing line.

The defeat delivers a hammer blow to the visitors in their bid to replicate their maiden Test series triumph Down Under two years ago.

‘We were expecting a real dogfight right to the end, late day four, maybe day five in this test,’ said Australia skipper Tim Paine.

‘Again, it shows the talent we have with the ball and when our boys execute and there’s anything in the wicket, that’s what can happen.’

Meanwhile, India captain Kohli – who will miss the rest of the series to head back to his home country to be with his wife ahead of the birth of their first child – said: ‘It’s very hard to put (my) feelings into words.

‘We had a lead of 60 when we arrived today and just collapsed completely.

‘When you work hard for two days… to get yourself in a good position and then literally in an hour, you put yourself in a position where it’s impossible to win, it really hurts.’

Kohli will be replaced by Rahane as skipper for the remainder of the series.

The tourists will also be sweating on the fitness of Mohammed Shami after the paceman suffered a blow to the forearm from a short Cummins delivery.

The 30-year-old was unable to bat on, which therefore brought an end to India’s abject innings when he retired hurt, and Kohli confirmed Shami had gone to hospital for scans on the problem but that ‘he is in a lot of pain’.
