Frank Lampard describes Kai Havertz as a ‘top player’ but insists Chelsea have yet to bid for £75m-rated Bayer Leverkusen and Germany star

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has described Kai Havertz as a ‘top player’ but insists the club has yet to make an offer for the German wonderkid.

Sportsmail revealed earlier this month how Chelsea were keen on the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder, 21, who is valued at £75million or more.

The Blues are likely to face stiff competitions from other suitors, including Real Madrid, should they try and sign Havertz during the summer window.

And Lampard, speaking ahead of Chelsea’s home fixture with Manchester City on Thursday, said: ‘He is obviously a top player but we are not going to comment on players of other teams. No bids have gone in.’

Chelsea have already secured the signing of Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner to bolster their Premier League title ambitions for next season.

Havertz, the Germany international of seven appearances, has enjoyed a wonderful season with Leverkusen, scoring 16 goals and supplying nine assists across all competitions.

Chelsea, who restarted their season with a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa on Sunday, will hope to strengthen their grip on a Champions League spot by beating City at Stamford Bridge.

They are currently five points ahead of Manchester United in fifth but that could be trimmed to two points should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side beat Sheffield United on Wednesday.
