Five names in the frame for Commonwealth Games Federation CEO role after David Grevemberg’s shock departure just 16 months before Birmingham 2022

  • Grevemberg left his post as Commonwealth Games Federation CEO this month
  • A global search for his replacement was launched with five lead contenders
  • British Rowing chief Andy Parkinson is considered early favourite for the role
  • Next Commonwealth Games are set to be held in Birmingham in July 2022

A five-horse race is on for the Commonwealth Games Federation CEO vacancy as the organisation scrambles for leadership 16 months out from Birmingham 2022.

A global search was launched on Friday in the wake of David Grevemberg’s shock departure, and Sportsmail understands a number of senior figures within British sport have influential admirers at the CGF.

Andy Parkinson, CEO of British Rowing who reached the final two when Sally Munday was appointed UK Sport chief executive in 2019, is an early favourite.

Other prominent candidates include Debbie Jevans, the former chief executive of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the CGF’s interim leader Martin Reynolds, former UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner and Simon Morton, the chief operating officer of UK Sport.

Grevemberg’s announcement last month that he was leaving came as a major blow with the Games due to commence in Birmingham on July 28 next year.

Meanwhile, World Athletics has reinstated the Authorised Neutral Athlete scheme to allow up to 10 vetted Russians to compete at the Olympics.
