Ben Foakes is keen to enjoy the ride despite his last Test for the foreseeable future on the horizon following impressive performances against India

  • Ben Foakes was promoted after regular wicket-keeper Jos Buttler flew home
  • The Surrey batsman has done well despite a challenging series against India
  • Foakes has three catches and three stumpings to his name over two Tests
  • However, he expects to return the gloves to Buttler after the series is over

Ben Foakes insists he will not think of the ‘bigger picture’ when he plays probably his last Test for the foreseeable future, however well he fares against India.

Foakes has been outstanding with the gloves in two Tests in the most difficult conditions in Chennai and Ahmedabad, since beginning his spell as stand-in for Jos Buttler that is destined to end as soon as this week’s fourth Test is completed.

But the man who has advanced his claim to be considered the best keeper in the world is relaxed about his standing in the set-up and determined to enjoy his place in the Ahmedabad sun as long as it lasts.

‘I’m just looking at this as an opportunity to play another Test in India,’ said Foakes, 28, ahead of Thursday’s final Test. ‘I’m purely thinking about how I can do well in the next game rather than the bigger picture.

‘If anything does come of it and I stay in the side, then that’s amazing, but I just want to enjoy the moment.

‘The way I’ve approached these games is to think of them as three chances to play for England and do as well as I can.’

It will certainly be difficult for England to leave Foakes out again for their summer Test series against New Zealand and India, but he doubts the selectors will let him keep the gloves and play Buttler as a specialist batsman.

‘We did do that a couple of years ago but I don’t know what they’re thinking now,’ said Foakes.

‘Jos did a fantastic job as a keeper-batsman when he was last in the side.’

For now Foakes is concentrating on England’s attempt to recover from the five-session thrashing in the third Test. ‘When you lose like that, you can learn from it, but we will have to learn quickly,’ he added.
