Singapore paves the way for strong cruise recovery in region

The post Singapore paves the way for strong cruise recovery in region appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

Southeast Asia welcomed its first cruise port call in over two years when Royal Caribbean’s (RCI) Spectrum of the Seas arrived at Malaysia’s Port Klang this morning. This will be followed closely by Resorts World Cruises’ Genting Dream, which will call at Indonesia’s Batam and Bintan on 2 July 2022. Both cruise ships are homeported in Singapore.

Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are the first Southeast Asian countries to resume port calls since cruising was halted in March 2020. Coupled with positive discussions to resume similar calls in more ports and the alignment of health protocols across the region, Singapore Tourism Board (STB) expects the cruise industry in Singapore to return to pre-pandemic levels between 2023 and 2024.

“The resumption of port calls is an important milestone for Singapore and the region,” said Mr Keith Tan, Chief Executive, STB. “It has been made possible by the strong partnership and collective commitment in ASEAN to grow the cruise industry. Cruising is a key tourism driver, and as ASEAN’s lead coordinator for cruise development, Singapore will continue to work with our counterparts to strengthen the region’s attractiveness as a cruising destination and source market.”

Sailing towards a strong recovery

Singapore’s strategic location, world-class air connectivity and port infrastructure make it a thriving cruise hub in Southeast Asia. Prior to COVID-19, Singapore’s cruise industry enjoyed robust growth. Over 400 cruise ships across 30 cruise brands were called at our ports in 2019, with year-on-year growth in passenger throughput of more than 1.8 million that year.

Singapore is now rebuilding its strong pipeline of cruise ship deployments, and working with cruise lines to expand their customer base – from regional markets such as Indonesia and Malaysia to mid and long-haul markets such as India, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Cruise has also captured a new wave of interest, winning over first-time cruisers who did not consider cruising as a leisure option prior to COVID-19. Since Singapore restarted cruising in November 2020, over half a million passengers have sailed on nearly 370 ‘cruise to nowhere’ sailings. As more ships offer varied itineraries for cruising out of Southeast Asia, these new cruisers are expected to support a strong rebound for the industry.

“The return of cruising to destinations is timely, as countries around the region re-open to welcome visitors, revitalise their tourism sectors, and embrace the new normal. Our cruises already have so much to offer with technologically-advanced ships and an ever-expanding range of first-at-sea onboard activities. We look forward to developing more exciting itineraries for our guests in this region,” said Ms Angie Stephen, Vice President and Managing Director, Asia-Pacific, Royal Caribbean International.

“We are committed to Singapore’s vision to be a premier cruise hub in Asia. Together with STB, we look forward to growing the cruise sector, including the fly-cruise segment; and to making Singapore and Southeast Asia one of the largest year-round cruise destinations in the world,” said Mr Michael Goh, President of Resorts World Cruises.

A flying start to cruise

The fly-cruise segment is also a key growth area that is expected to rebound strongly, given Singapore’s reopening to all vaccinated travellers and the resumption of port calls. Prior to COVID-19, 70% of Singapore’s cruise passengers were international visitors travelling to Singapore to take a cruise to explore Southeast Asia. The strong demand for fly-cruise will add to Singapore’s appeal as a homeport for cruise lines.

To prepare for the return of fly-cruise travellers, STB will continue to offer the Cruise Development Fund to encourage cruise lines to homeport in Singapore. Cruise agents can also tap on this grant to develop and market cruise packages. Through such partnerships, STB helps cruise agents launch effective marketing campaigns to promote sailings from Singapore and showcase enticing cruise and land experiences, in turn attracting more travellers and cruise converts to our shores.

Four Brazil destinations for different types of travel

The post Four Brazil destinations for different types of travel appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

Brazil’s cultural diversity is wide since the colonization of the country, where influences from Africa and Europe combined with the native culture. As a continental country, Brazilian culture is expressed in a unique way across regions.

Cultural tourism attracts international tourists who travel to discover the wide range of touristic offerings that are unique to the South American country. From the influence of the colonial past to beautiful landscapes and the joyful people, Brazil welcomes tourists from around the globe to have an amazing experience.

Florianópolis — for islandic nightlife

Adventurous travellers looking to experience island vibes alongside Brazilian nightlife should consider Florianópolis — one of Brazil’s most beautiful islands. Wherever heads turn, visitors will either find beautiful beaches, parties or afternoon/nightclubs. The Jurere Internacional — Florianópolis’ beach-side neighbourhood — promises the best of beachside Brazilian day parties.

But there’s more. To the south of the island is Praia do Campeche and Armação. Here, boats leave for Ilha do Campeche, an island of archaeological interest (thanks to its several rock engravings and paintings) with Caribbean-like seas. Alternatively, keen surfers can head to Praia do Matadeiro, another Southern popular spot.

Fernando de Noronha — for crystal clear waters

Visitors wondering what paradise on earth looks like must-visit Fernando de Noronha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site boasting beautiful beaches and unique ecotourism activities. The volcanic archipelago is perfect for families, couples, and friends who want to enjoy hiking, boat trips, snorkelling, surfing, as well as downtime.

Located within the heart of Fernando de Noronha is Baía do Sancho — one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with crystal clear waters, teeming with marine wildlife. Those interested in seeing several types of fish, turtles, and small sharks can also head to Praia do Sueste or Praia do Porto.

Based in Fernando de Noronha is Projeto Tamar, an organization that aims to protect and conserve a feeding and spawning area for rare sea turtle species. Tourists can embark on guided tours and lectures, learning from biologists about the life cycle of sea turtles and how to protect them. The island is a breeding area for green turtles and a feeding, growing, and resting area for juveniles of this species and the hawksbill turtle.

Minas Gerais — for historic, colonial architecture & art

The state of Minas Gerais is a great option for those who enjoy a combination of history, nature, and architecture.

The state has several countryside gems that are worth exploring at a slow pace. Ouro Preto, once the capital of Minas Gerais, is a colonial town in Serra do Espinhaço, known for its baroque architecture and for its steep, winding cobbled streets.

Elsewhere, admirers of architecture, nature, and culture can marvel at the baroque-inspired, historic buildings, and secular churches of Diamantina. A city acting as a gateway to the waterfalls of Biribiri State Park.

A World Cultural Heritage Site, Congonhas is another city where visitors can explore the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Sanctuary, an architectural, sculptural complex showcasing Christian art and expressive works. Congonhas is also home to one of Brazil’s greatest artistic patrimonies – the works executed by António Francisco Lisboa, known as “Aleijadinho”.

Estrada Real — for gastronomy & culture

Technically not a destination but worthy of a mention is the Estrada Real, Brazil’s largest 1,600km long tourist route. Recognized for its historic significance, Estrada Real comprises of a series of tourist routes offering gastronomic, cultural, religious and adventurous experiences.

Travellers will be delighted to find paths full of cosy inns, urban and rural. Local residents are also friendly enough to offer camping facilities or homestay for those who need them.

Some of the main routes include the Old Way, the New Way, the Diamond Way and the Sabarabuçu Way. Visitors are awarded a Certificate of Completion should they collect passport stamps along the entire Estrada Real route. To obtain the certificate, visitors need to acquire a minimum number of stamps, which varies according to the path taken.

Emirates flies directly to Sao Paulo International Airport in Brazil every week. From there, connecting flights can take you to your next desired, diverse Brazilian haven.

Scotland comes back stronger and more sustainable

0

[ad_1]

The post Scotland comes back stronger and more sustainable appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

Vicki Miller, director of marketing, VisitScotland

Now that travel is slowly coming back, people are travelling more consciously and are looking for destinations that allow them to reconnect, reset and reinvigorate with nature. Prompted by the recent pandemic, travellers are seeking more sustainable destinations. Scotland sits on the axis of all of these.

Scotland is calling louder than ever to all travellers as a place to enjoy world-class food and drink, events, films, history and culture. Having worked tirelessly over the past 18 months to adapt to and embrace the new normal, Scottish businesses are open once more and are ready to welcome visitors.

TD sits down with Vicki Miller, director of marketing at VisitScotland and passionate storyteller and improving customer experience, about Scotland’s responsible recovery and its new offerings.

Travel Daily (TD): How important is responsible recovery for tourism in Scotland?

Vicki Miller (VM): The COVID-19 pandemic has made people pause and reflect about the future, the environment, and their impact on it. Visitors have always had an interest in sustainability however it is now more acute than ever. For example, when surveyed, 73% of long-haul travellers expressed great interest in travelling more sustainably in future and selecting destinations which are less crowded and with a commitment to making tourism sustainable. VisitScotland can help travellers plan and enjoy an eco-friendly trip.

We are examining our own operations to ensure we are more sustainable, through our marketing activity we are promoting sustainable experiences and encouraging visitors to travel more responsibly. We are also encouraging visitors to stay longer, buy local, visit all year round, explore more widely and, in turn, contribute to the sustainable quality of life of those communities. This will ease pressure on extremely busy areas and ensure the economic benefits of tourism are evenly spread across the country throughout the year.  VisitScotland is also committed to working with the tourism industry to provide support and guidance on how to become more sustainable through the Destination Net Zero programme.

In line with the national tourism strategy, Outlook 2030, and our own framework for sustainable and responsible growth, our four priority areas are economic, environmental, social and cultural. We are working to support the protection and considerate enjoyment of Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage and we are supporting the transition to a low carbon economy. We are ensuring that tourism and events contribute to thriving communities and making sure that tourism and events in Scotland are inclusive.

TD: What are the changes in your message and brand in line with responsible tourism recovery?

VM: In October 2021, we launched our Tread Lightly campaign – this is a new environmental strand to our global Scotland is Calling marketing campaign. It includes a film and content which encourages visitors to “tread lightly” when visiting Scotland, whilst highlighting the many experiences, destinations and businesses which allow them to make their visit more sustainable. It is being distributed through paid and social media in some of Scotland’s key markets (UK, Europe, USA, China). As an island, air connectivity will continue to be significant for international travel. International travellers are an important market and Scotland Is Calling is focused on supporting Scotland as a responsible destination where travellers can slow down, re-charge, escape and enjoy immersive and sustainable tourism experiences.

“VisitScotland is committed to working with the industry to create a long-lasting sustainable tourism destination.”

From some of the most spectacular off-the-beaten-track destinations and unique eco-friendly places to stay, to easy trips by public transport and train-accessible bike routes, VisitScotland has collated some fantastic resources for travellers to take a trip that they can feel good about.

VisitScotland is committed to working with the industry to create a long-lasting sustainable tourism destination supporting the ambition of Outlook 2030, for Scotland to be recognised globally as a leader in responsible tourism, which will protect the natural and cultural environment and benefit visitors and residents alike.

TD: Why people should visit Scotland post COVID?

VM: There are so many reasons why Scotland is Calling – it’s a unique and special destination that means it’s at the top of travellers’ must-see lists. Our welcoming nature and humour, the proximity of our cities to unspoiled nature, our light and air, the magical and mysterious history, even our use of language and dialects… to name just a few! All of these elements are calling visitors to Scotland in 2022.

“Scotland is a place where visitors can feel connected…”

Whether meeting new people, sharing new experiences, reconnecting with nature, or just breathing in the fresh air, memories to last a lifetime are waiting to be made in Scotland. Scotland is a place where visitors can feel connected, even if it’s their very first time here, but at the same time, they can disconnect as they leave everything behind and explore the great outdoors, uncover the fascinating history and discover Scotland’s cultural highlights.

Scotland is a place where visitors will be left speechless by the scenery, the history and the architecture they encounter yet they won’t be able to wait to tell all their friends about what they have seen. The destination is full of one-of-a-kind, only Scotland moments and it’s only by being here that visitors can truly experience the wonder and beauty of the destination. That’s why Scotland is Calling!

2022 is Scotland’s Year of Stories where we will celebrate stories inspired by, written, or created in Scotland. Stories are a vital part of Scotland’s culture and every community has a different tale to tell. Shared stories, whether spoken, written, sung or filmed are what give a sense of place, history and belonging. As part of the themed year, we will be launching travel trade itineraries inspired by the Year of Stories. Scotland’s stories reflect who we are and shape how others see us. Our stories enable us to inspire others to discover Scotland and we hope that our stories are calling travellers in 2022 so that they can come and create their own stories and memories here in Scotland!

TD: What are the new programs and training you offer to travel agents?

VM: In April this year we hosted Discover Scotland: Reconnect 2022 which connected 298 international travel trade buyers with 324 trade ready Scottish suppliers over a series of nearly 4.5k virtual meetings. This will be complemented by live regional showcases (fam trips) in May and September, where selected buyers will have opportunities to experience unique Scottish products for themselves.

Our SCOTSagent programme is designed specifically for the travel trade, providing an introduction to the destination, in-depth exploration about what to see and do in Scotland, and showcasing the very best of what the country has to offer clients. Our Travel Trade teams Send out a monthly email newsletter, highlighting what’s new in terms of product, marketing inspiration, and new resources that can help our intermediary partners sell Scotland to their clients. We also regularly offer webinars to provide destination inspiration and Q&A opportunities. Additionally, the VisitScotland Travel Trade website is a great resource for travel trade representatives.

TD: What travel trends do you think we will see this year and how do you plan to capitalise on these trends?

VM: Firstly, the importance of travel advisors in the booking journey across all markets is a trend that we are responding to. We understand that, as travel returns, more and more prospective travellers will be looking for reassurance and a level of security around their holiday bookings; this is where advisors and agents will have a key role. This is why in our recovery strategy we are placing such importance on education, training and engagement with the travel trade.

The recent success of our industry event Discover Scotland: Reconnect 2022, enabled our intermediary partners to connect with businesses here in Scotland to understand their products whilst also creating opportunities for businesses here in Scotland to engage with travel trade at a pivotal time in post-pandemic recovery, demonstrates the integral role travel agents and advisors will play in the tourism recovery here in Scotland.

Secondly, with 16-34-year-olds expected to be among the first to travel this year, and global insights suggesting this age range will lead the international travel market’s post-COVID revival, VisitScotland is focusing the second phase of our Scotland is Calling campaign on attracting younger visitors. It aims to ensure Scotland is front of mind with those who are yet to make their travel plans. VisitScotland is focusing on audiences we know want to travel again and using the channels we know they use to help show how Scotland can fulfil their emotional needs.

While younger visitors are expected to travel sooner, VisitScotland recognises the importance of its core audience and continues to engage and inspire them about all that a visit to Scotland can offer. This next phase of Scotland is Calling will help build new, deeper connections with visitors in our key markets, inspiring them to plan a trip to Scotland in the future. Working together with industry, stakeholders, and the Scottish Government we want to increase momentum and ensure that Scotland is the destination of choice for all visitors in 2022 and beyond.

Zhou Guanyu insists his halo ‘saved me today’ after terrifying British GP crash

[ad_1]

‘I’m ok, all clear’: Zhou Guanyu insists his halo ‘saved me today’ after emerging unhurt from terrifying crash at the first corner of the British Grand Prix that saw his car flip upside down and slam into the fence

  • Zhou Guanyu credited the halo on his car for saving his life after his horror crash
  • He had crashed into the tyre barriers on the roof of his car after a dramatic start
  • Zhou was caught in a collision with Mercedes’ George Russell, who also retired
  • The race was red-flagged immediately before a 53-minute delay to the restart
  • Northamptonshire Police confirmed several arrests as people entered the track

Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu praised Formula One’s halo for saving his life in a terrifying high-speed crash on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix.

A record 142,000 crowd at Silverstone watched horrified as Zhou’s Alfa Romeo skidded upside down before flipping over the tyre wall and smashing into the outside fence leaving the 23-year-old trapped in his cockpit.

He had to be cut out of his car and taken away on a stretcher but, miraculously, the protective halo bar above his helmet – introduced as a safety measure by F1 in 2018 – meant he was given a clear bill of health after assessment.

WHAT IS A HALO?

A three-pronged titanium bar that sits atop the cockpit to protect drivers when flipping over, as happened to Zhou Guanyu, or when another car lands on top of them, as was the case with Lewis Hamilton last year, or any other accident.

It was introduced at the start of the 2018 season and is now used in every FIA series, as well as other racing formats including IndyCar.

He later tweeted: ‘I’m Ok, all clear. Halo saved me today. Thank you for your kind messages.’

The same device also rescued F2 driver Roy Nissany earlier in the day after the Red Bull of Dennis Hauger landed on top of him.

Carlos Sainz, who won his maiden Grand Prix by beating home favourite Lewis Hamilton into third, praised the halo.

‘I was completely shocked,’ said the Spaniard. ‘The crash was incredible and it’s crazy Zhou has come out of it. We sometimes criticise the FIA but you have to give it to them how much they have helped us. Today they have saved two lives.’

George Russell, who clipped Zhou’s tyre in the build-up to the flip, ran over to check on the driver and said the accident was the scariest thing he had seen.

‘He was stuck there in such a fine gap between the tyre barriers and metal fence, there was nothing he could do, nowhere to go. It was horrible,’ said Russell. ‘I am just glad he is OK. I got swamped at the start and the next thing I know I was in the side of Zhou.’

The crash caused a delay of 53 minutes and seven Stop Oil campaigners were arrested for running on to the track when the drivers were red flagged.

But it triggered one of the most dramatic F1 races of recent years.

Hamilton led for eight laps before he was eclipsed by Sainz, who recorded his first F1 win in 150 attempts. Hamilton’s position changed five times in the final 10 laps before he finished third behind Sergio Perez with Max Verstappen seventh.

‘I loved the racing and dicing with the other drivers. It reminded me of my go-karting days,’ said Hamilton, greeted by Hollywood star Tom Cruise at the finish line.

It was Hamilton’s 13th podium at Silverstone, a record, but also his 11th race without a win – the worst run of his career.

Hamilton courted controversy by defending the group who ran on to the track. ‘I just said big up the protestors. I love that people are fighting for the planet and we need more people like them.’

Sainz was delighted with his first victory. ‘It was an epic final few laps,’ he said. ‘I have to admit it’s a relief to get that first win but I will be looking for more now.’
