Real Madrid are the bookies’ early FAVOURITES to next appoint Mauricio Pochettino as manager

Real Madrid are the bookies’ early FAVOURITES to next appoint Mauricio Pochettino as manager, with former club Tottenham, Manchester United and Newcastle also in contention as future destinations for the ex-PSG boss

Real Madrid have emerged as the early favourites to next appoint Mauricio Pochettino as manager, after he was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain.

The French giants confirmed Pochettino’s departure on Tuesday despite guiding the club to the Ligue 1 title, as the French giants confirmed he would be replaced by Christophe Galtier.

He may not have been able to end the club’s wait for their first Champions League trophy, but Betfair have the current European champions Real Madrid as 6/4 favourites to be the 50-year-old’s next destination.

Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham in November 2019, just months after he guided them to a losing Champions League final effort against Liverpool.

After a number of frustrating seasons, it was only last campaign, under Antonio Conte, that Spurs have been able to turn their fortunes around and return to the Champions League with a top-four finish.

Spurs though are second favourites to appoint Pochettino at 6-1, and they are followed by Manchester United and Newcastle at 7-1.

Pochettino had long been linked with becoming Manchester United’s long-term replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but Erik ten Hag has now taken over at Old Trafford.

It would have to take another failed spell at Old Trafford for a United manager if the Argentine’s next club is to be the Red Devils.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are in strong contention on the back of their Saudi-led takeover last year.

Eddie Howe came in and steadied the ship at the Magpies when it looked like they were in danger of dropping to the Championship.

Real Madrid, following their Champions League win, are favourites to appoint Pochettino despite his failure to deliver PSG the trophy during his time at the Ligue 1 giants

However, the club’s owners could look for a big-name manager in the future to continue taking them in an upward trend.

Rounding off Betfair’s list of potential future destinations, includes English sides Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as German giants Borussia Dortmund.

Pochettino’s PSG side suffered a difficult Champions League exit to Real Madrid, after Karim Benzema’s hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabeu sent the LaLiga champions into the quarter-finals last season.

Real Madrid though have long kept a close eye on Pochettino, considering him for the job last year when Zinedine Zidane left the club.

The club are happy with current manager Carlo Ancelotti as they come off a successful campaign but the Italian, who re-joined Madrid in the summer of 2021, has not spent more than two seasons at any side since his eight-year stint with AC Milan which ended in 2009.

The French giants are in the midst of making major changes to the club after tying down star man Kylian Mbappe to a new deal – with the French forward said to be given new influence over the team’s direction.

The former Tottenham boss won Ligue 1 but failed to deliver the Champions League trophy the club craves, despite having an all-star line-up featuring Neymar, Lionel Messi and Mbappe.

In a 35-word Twitter statement on Tuesday, the French giants said: ‘Paris Saint-Germain confirm that Mauricio Pochettino has ended his role at the club.

‘The club would like to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them the best for the future.’

Skift Take

Good morning from Skift. It’s Tuesday, July 5 in New York City. Here’s what you need to know about the business of travel today.

Today’s edition of Skift’s daily podcast looks at Margaritaville’s particular approach to expansion, easyJet’s executive shuffle, and the impact of the Ukraine war on eastern European tourism.

Episode Notes

Travel executives expressed concern earlier this year that the war in Ukraine would hurt tourism to neighboring countries. But as travelers are less worried about the conflict now than at its outset, Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam writes Eastern Europe is making progress in its tourism recovery.

Sam White, an executive at tour operator Explore Worldwide, was one industry leader uncertain about the war’s impact on Ukraine’s neighbors. White had good reason for concern — a March survey revealed 62 percent of Americans were worried about the conflict spreading to other parts of Europe.

However, as travelers seem less fearful about the war extending beyond Ukraine’s borders, tourism executives in Poland and Romania are optimistic about a strong recovery. Polish officials in particular have said individual visitation numbers have been strong recently. In addition, Yves Marceau, the vice president of product at G Adventures, said higher airfares are impacting travel to Eastern Europe more than the war in Ukraine.

We turn next to one of music’s biggest brands, Jimmy Buffett. His hit song Margaritaville became a springboard to a multi-billion dollar empire, including profitable hotels. Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O’Neill and Andrea Doyle, the Senior Editor for Skift Meetings, explain how Margaritaville Holdings CEO John Cohlan helped turn the brand into a major player in the hotel industry.

Cohlan, who first met the singer in 1996 after being transferred to Florida for work, said he realized Buffett could become an even bigger brand while seeing him perform at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Cohlan has since played a crucial role in Buffett’s business enterprises, including arranging for a deal for a Margaritaville restaurant at Universal Studios’ Orlando theme park that opened in 1999.

But Margaritaville Holdings has also been pioneers in the hotel industry. The company adopted the asset-light model, in which it franchises its brand to hotel owners rather than running hotels on its own, ahead of industry giants Marriott and Hilton. Cohlan has also expressed pride in helping to popularize the lifestyle hotel concept.

Finally, repercussions continue to be belt by recent airline and airport mayhem as easyJet’s Peter Bellew resigned as chief operating officer at the Switzerland-based low-cost carrier, following weeks of turmoil at the airline

He has now left “to pursue other business opportunities,” the airline said in a statement on Monday, effective July 1, as other European airlines prepare for a difficult summer ahead — including SAS which will now face widespread strikes after pilots voted on Monday to take industrial action.

Airport caps will also contribute to an already challenging period.
For now, David Morgan, easyJet’s director of flight operations, will lead the operations function in an interim role, reporting to CEO Johan Lundgren, writes Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia.
