Swan Hellenic announced that the Naming Ceremony of its second ice-class cultural expedition cruise ship, SH Vega, had taken place at Helsinki Shipyard. The ship is now on her way to Norway and her first cultural expedition cruise of the Arctic, an 11-day exploration of the Svalbard Archipelago, departing Tromsø on the 20th of July 2022.
The purpose-designed new vessel was named by Patrizia Zito née Passalacqua, wife of Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito, in the presence of Helsinki Shipyard Senior Management, the media and members of the cruise and travel industries from around the world.
SH Vega is the second in a series of three elegant, high ice-class, cultural expedition cruise vessels made for premium discovery experiences worldwide, with a strong bias for extreme latitude areas. SH Vega features a 5-megawatt diesel-electric propulsion system with selective catalytic reduction and a PC5 ice-strengthened hull with extra-large stabilisers for exceptional passenger comfort. At 113 m, the 10,600-ton vessel has been specially designed to explore the most inspiring and inaccessible places on the planet.
SH Vega, like her twin sister SH Minerva, has been designed to meet the latest environmental regulations and is completely self-sufficient for up to 40 days or 8,000 nautical miles. Preparations have been made to implement battery technology which would also make it possible to operate silently. The vessels are equipped with exhaust gas cleaning, advanced wastewater treatment systems and the waste storage facilities required for operating in sensitive polar areas.
Providing spacious 5-star accommodation for 152 guests in 76 spacious staterooms and suites, the vast majority with large balconies, SH Vega is operated by an onboard team of 120 to provide the highest levels of personal service.
Soon after the ceremony, she set sail from Helsinki to Tromsø, Norway, for a season of maiden cruises exploring the magic of the Arctic, from the Svalbard Peninsula and Iceland’s landscapes of ice and fire to Greenland’s dramatic majesty, the Northwest Passage and the wilds of Northern Canada. Then, come late Autumn, she’ll make her way down the U.S. East Coast over 12 days, taking in everything from New York, Norfolk and Charleston to Miami. From November, she’ll be offering a range of 11 to 21-day cultural expedition cruises of Antarctica through until March 2023, when she sails up the West Coast of Africa to the Canary Islands and Western Europe, also immersing guests in the Celtic lands of Britain and Ireland on the way to her second Arctic season. This will end with a crossing from Greenland to Nova Scotia, followed by the Caribbean and then Brazil in October 2023.
SH Vega sailed from Helsinki in the expert hands of industry veterans Captain Tuomo Leskinen and Hotel Director Philipp Reutener, who created the acclaimed Swan Hellenic onboard experience on SH Minerva and will ensure the same distinctive high standards are consistently maintained on her sister ship.
Executive Chef Avhier Singh brings experience in high-end hotels and cruise companies. But even more importantly, he also comes across from SH Minerva, where he brought to life the varied menus of freshly cooked delicacies that include original Italian and Asian fusion dishes created for the iconic company by award-winning Consultant Chefs Andrea Ribaldone and Sang Keun Oh.
After the Naming Ceremony, Helsinki Shipyard Project Manager Jonas Packalén commented: “This is a proud day for us all. SH Vega is every bit as beautiful and elegant as her twin sister! We wish her and her crew fair winds and following seas, with special thanks to everyone involved in the project for their unstinting dedication!”
Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito added: “I would like to congratulate everyone at Helsinki for their superb work in creating this wonderful new ship. We are delighted with the quality of their work, creating another unique presence on the waves, and very much look forward to taking her first guests to see what others don’t, exploring the Arctic in exceptional comfort and style.”
SH Minerva and SH Vega will be joined early next year by the slightly larger SH Diana, which is already under construction at Helsinki Shipyard.

North Melbourne coach David Noble will be SACKED today after Kangaroos slumped to 14 losses in a row

North Melbourne coach David Noble will be SACKED today after Kangaroos slumped to 14 losses in a row in their second straight season from hell – as Brownlow winner pinpoints the last straw that led to exit

  • Noble reportedly told colleagues on Monday that he will be leaving the club
  • Announcement of his departure is expected today after horror run of form
  • Noble took over Kangaroos in 2021 and led them to the wooden spoon that year

David Noble will step down as coach of North Melbourne on Tuesday after the club decided to sack him due to a shocking run of losses that have left the Kangaroos nailed to the bottom of the table.

Noble told colleagues and close friends of the decision on Monday night, according to SEN radio.

The Kangaroos currently only have won win from 16 games this year and have suffered 14 straight losses while averaging just 10 goals in those defeats.

Noble’s treatment of players has also been put under scrutiny this year, with the coach taking the extraordinary step of apologising to his players after giving them an intense verbal spray after their big loss to Brisbane in May.

The 55-year-old took over as Kangaroos coach in November 2020, leading the club to the wooden spoon in 2021 after they finished second last the season before.

The former Fitzroy player is known for his tough, confrontational coaching style. He’ll be replaced by North development and VFL coach Leigh Adams in the interim while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

Ex-Hawks premiership winner Alastair Clarkson is available but there are doubts he’d want to coach a club in the Kangaroos’ position, and the team has also been linked to West Coast’s Adam Simpson.

Soon after the news broke, Brownlow medalist Adam Cooney said one Noble decision might have been the last straw for his time with the club.

‘Playing (No.1 draft pick Jason) Horne-Francis in the VFL last week might have been the nail in the coffin,’ he said on SEN radio.

SEN also reported that some players had told the club they would look at leaving the team after this season if Noble wasn’t sacked.

North are currently in the middle of a club review being conducted by veteran footy administrator Geoff Walsh, who was brought in as an advisor amid calls for the team to be relocated to Tasmania due partly to their dismal run of form.

Last week sensational emails from rich Kangaroos backer Adrian Kinderis to CEO Ben Amarfio were leaked, with the former begging the club to take action.

Kinderis was scathing of coach David Noble’s appointment, with the mentor winning just five of his 37 games in charge and overseeing a 112-point thrashing by Geelong just before the exchange became public.

‘The CEO and executive team that installed the current coaching regime have to be held accountable for the current state of the club,’ Kinderis wrote in his email.

‘Sorry Ben (Amarfio), you gotta go and take the club president (Sonya Hood) with you – anyone that backed this experiment that was called wrong at the time and has been wrong ever since needs to be held accountable.’

North had one of their best games of the season against Collingwood on Saturday, pushing the in-form Magpies all the way before losing by just seven points.

Asians are ready to explore the world

The post Asians are ready to explore the world appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

Booking.com has launched its inaugural APAC Travel Confidence Index, which provides a snapshot of how confident consumers feel about exploring the world again, as well as whether they would welcome inbound travel. The commissioned research polled 11,000 travellers from 11 markets¹ across Asia and Oceania between April and May 2022, combining this with the company’s proprietary data and insights as a digital travel leader over the past 25 years.

The Travel Confidence Index explores the overall comfort levels, motivators and concerns of consumers across the Asia Pacific and how this varies across the region. 71% of Hong Kong travellers plan to travel in the next 12 months. A similar percentage of them “just want to get away” since they are sick being stuck at home. At the same time, the top three considerations when booking their next trip are safety (63%), quarantine periods (58%) and cost (51%).

As Asia starts to emerge from several years of strict border closures and lockdowns, the diversity in terms of consumer travel sentiment and confidence across Asia Pacific has certainly become more pronounced, with key findings highlighted below.

Travel Confidence Market Ranking

Across the 11 markets polled, India emerged most confident with 86% of India travellers stating they intend to travel in the next 12 months; followed closely by Vietnam and China. While North Asian markets of Korea, Taiwan and Japan ranked lower on the index in terms of overall confidence, travel intent among respondents remained relatively high (above 60%).

Hong Kong ranked 7th on the Travel Confidence Index despite having a continuous tight border restriction in past years in comparison to many markets across the region.

“It’s truly been heartwarming and exciting to see travel in Asia Pacific returning with the easing of most border restrictions. This has reinvigorated not just consumers, but the travel industry overall. Our  APAC Travel Confidence Index reflects how while travel intent remains strong, travel confidence remains nuanced across Asia – for a variety of reasons. It is a promising indication of the opportunities available for the industry to adapt and collaborate now to bolster the overall confidence of travellers, so we can truly make it easier for everyone to travel and experience the world again in a sustainable way.” shared Laura Houldworth, Managing Director of Asia Pacific at Booking.com.

Air New Zealand brings back Covid Flexibility Policy to help customers

The post Air New Zealand brings back Covid Flexibility Policy to help customers appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

In response to increasing levels of illness in the community, Air New Zealand is reintroducing its Covid Flexibility Policy until 31 July, offering customers the flexibility of opting into credit if they are no longer able to travel.

The airline is hearing from a large number of customers who are falling sick with Covid or other winter illnesses and can no longer travel. It’s also seeing higher-than-usual employee sickness leading to flight cancellations.

From today, the airline is temporarily bringing back its Covid Flexibility Policy, which allows customers travelling around New Zealand or overseas to cancel their travel if they are unwell and either put their booking into credit or change their flight and have their change fee waived.

Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty says the decision is the right thing to do by the airline’s customers.

“With more than 670,000 customers booked to travel with us in the next two weeks alone, it’s likely that some will find themselves in a position where they can no longer fly due to illness or looking after unwell family members.

“This change will give them the flexibility to change their plans, so they don’t miss out on their holidays or being reunited with friends and whānau, and they can still get to where they want to be at a later time.”

Customers booked between now and 31 July can hold the value of their fare in credit for 12 months from the time they requested their credit.

Customers can easily opt into credit via the Air New Zealand app or website in the Manage Booking tab, by selecting request a credit. They can also use the app or website to change their flights to another date and have their change fee waived, though a fare difference may apply.

“With sickness and wild winter weather disrupting flights over the past few days, our Contact Centre team are under an enormous amount of pressure and are doing everything they can to help our customers at this time. So we thank our customers for being patient and understanding while we work through these challenges.”

Customers are encouraged to only contact the team if their flight is departing within the next 48 hours and to check out Air New Zealand’s Travel Alerts page before getting in touch.

Customers who booked through a travel agent or third-party online agent should contact them directly about making changes to their bookings or credit validity.
