The first cruise ship to visit New Zealand since the pandemic’s start arrived on Friday, marking an awaited return to normalcy for the country’s tourism industry and resetting the country’s tourism priorities.

To stop the spread of COVID-19 and eventually eradicate it, New Zealand closed its borders in early 2020. In May this year, the country allowed most tourists to enter by plane again, but it wasn’t until two weeks ago that all restrictions were relaxed, including those for arrivals by sea.

The cruise business is perplexed as to what took so long.

With the lifting of the ban, the Carnival Australia cruise ship Pacific Explorer arrived in Auckland on Friday morning, bringing 2,000 passengers and staff members on a 12-day roundtrip from Sydney to Fiji.

“Amazing, wouldn’t you say?” Minister of Tourism Stuart Nash said during an interview. It’s a big deal because we can return to business as usual and reopen our borders.

Nash predicted it would be some time before the tourism industry recovered to its pre-pandemic levels, contributing 20% of New Zealand’s foreign income and over 5% of GDP.

Nash said that the pause in tourism had allowed the country to reevaluate its goals. One of these was to target more affluent “high quality” tourists who would spend more time there and take home interesting stories.

According to Nash, “We are not targeting the guys that come over and put up on Facebook, ‘Hey, travel through New Zealand for $10 a day living on two-minute noodles.

He added that another objective was to change the general public’s conception of the industry as one where workers endured long hours for poor pay and instead portray it as a desirable and financially rewarding industry.

Nash predicted that tourism numbers could remain low for a while due to increased flying costs and travel safety precautions due to the pandemic, but that the industry will make a full recovery in the long run.

According to him, the United States is an important market for New Zealand. “In the United States, $2 trillion has been saved on top of the $1 trillion that would have been saved if COVID hadn’t been a factor. Okay, so there’s a tiny sum of cash in circulation.

“It’s very important to us to work with a technology provider who understands the unique perspectives of the Japanese tourism market while enabling us to effectively tell the world about Solare Hotels and Resorts, and what our properties and locations have to offer,” says Katsuyuki Yoshida exclusive officer of sales & revenue management division of Solare Hotels and Resorts. “Distributing our content via the SynXis platform will enhance visibility for our hotels, helping us to increase bookings and fulfil our aim of making the guest experience more enjoyable and fulfilling for more travellers. We aim to create hotels with deep connections to their locations and this new agreement will ensure that we can showcase those hotels and those connections to a wide global audience.”

The distribution agreement comes at an important moment for the Japanese travel industry and is one of several key deals Sabre has announced in Japan in recent months. Japan has now opened to selected tour groups and is preparing for further relaxing of border restrictions for tourists in the future.

Malaysia Airlines has decided to upgrade its fleet of A330 jets to the most recent A330neo type, promising passengers a more modern and pleasant experience on flights from Australia to Kuala Lumpur.

The A330neo, an upgraded variant of the “original” A330, features new engine designs and a fresh take on the cabin layout, lessens cabin noise, expands individual seats, and enlarges overhead bins under the Airspace cabin brand.

The A350 is essential for these components, as it introduced various new Airspace elements, including more powerful LED lighting and larger, deeper overhead bins that boost storage space by around 66%.

Between late 2023 and 2028, Malaysia Airlines will replace its current fleet of 21 A330s with 20 A330neo jets, in the larger A330-900 variant, to fly across Asia, the Pacific, and the Middle East. The airline also has the option to buy another 20 A330neo jets.

The A330neo jets will have 300 seats in two classes, up from the 287-290 in its A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft.

Premium passengers are waiting to see if Malaysia Airlines updates its A330 and A350 business class seats to the newest version, Thomson Aero’s Vantage XL model, which features sliding privacy doors.

CEO Izham Ismail of Malaysia Airlines remarked that adding A330neo planes to their fleet would be a “logical transition” from the company’s existing A330ceo planes.

Because of its lower fuel consumption per passenger, the A330neo will help airlines achieve their environmental goals without sacrificing the importance of passenger safety or comfort.

Christian Scherer, CCO & Head of International at Airbus, added, “We are looking forwards to working with Malaysia Airlines to define an extraordinary cabin experience.”

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines has begun operating its remodelled Boeing 737s on domestic and short-range regional routes, featuring new business and economy seats that it describes as “a progressive step towards the future” – even to the point of ditching seatback video screens in favour of beaming movies and TV shows via WiFi to passengers’ own devices.
