Online Travel Faces Key Questions Heading Into Earnings

0

[ad_1]

As the earnings season, when public companies issue their quarterly results, kicks off for online travel agencies this week, we’ll be looking to see how inflation and other economic disruptions are impacting their summer and fall outlooks, and whether they have anything innovative in the works.

India’s MakeMyTrip will be one of the first online travel agencies to report their financials on Wednesday and then earnings will likely run for another couple of months as China’s Trip.com Group usually issues its numbers in late September.

Here are a few things we are looking for from the individual companies:

How Was Airbnb’s July?

Analysts expect Airbnb to report strong bookings growth for the second quarter, which ended June 30, but what will the short-term rental giant say about how things were trending in July? Did bookings growth show signs of slowing in July, as some expect?

Airbnb commentary on how its bookings are faring so far in the third quarter will send its share price up or down.

Also, will Airbnb mention its mid-quarter search category expansion, and whether this disrupted operations, as many hosts on social media insist?

Will Tripadvisor’s New CEO Tip His Hand About Strategy?

Tripadvisor has its first new CEO, Matt Goldberg, in more than two decades. During his first earnings call as Tripadvisor’s new boss, investors will look to see if he moves ahead with a potential plan to spin out activities aggregator Viator and also possibly dining reservations platform TheFork, or are those moves on hold now because of adverse market conditions?

What will Goldberg say about Tripadvisor Plus, the company’s subscription discount service, or any strategy to reenergize the company’s core hotel metasearch business?

Did Booking Holdings Pick Up Market Share?

Did Booking Holdings gain ground on some of its rivals during the quarter, as some reports indicated, and how severe was the impact to the company from the euro’s fall in relation to the dollar?

What has been the progress on CEO Glenn Fogel’s signature connected trip strategy?

Did Expedia Group’s Vacation Rental Unit Keep the Momentum Going?

Some leisure-oriented vacation rental companies are downsizing or reporting a soft outlook for bookings in the fall. Given that backdrop, has Vrbo, which has been the strongest brand in the Expedia Group portfolio, been able to maintain the upbeat pace it established in 2020 and 2021?

Will there be an update on Expedia’s progress in re-platforming the company, and trying to lean into the business-to-business portion of its operations?

Now that there are flight-price notifications in the Expedia app, will the company disclose plans to begin offering a flight-price freeze or other fintech or insurance-oriented products?

Is Sonder Making Progress After Restructuring?

Sonder restructured in June, eliminating 20 percent of its corporate jobs, as it vowed to tamp down growth to get to cash-flow positive in 2023. Other than the layoffs, has the company made progress on limiting its cash burn?

In the interim: the market hasn’t given Sonder a vote of confidence: Its shares finished trading Friday at less than $1, namely $0.97 per share.

What is Sonder’s outlook heading into the fall and winter?

Can Vacasa Get Its House in Order?

Vacasa axed 25 sales jobs, and read the riot act to much of its sales team that they need to up their deals pace after what one source said was a problematic integration of Salesforce software several months ago.

With its valuation pummeled and now hovering at a little more than $1 billion, do Vacasa executives regret its stock market debut in December, and having now to make overtures to bend toward profitability inside the public glare?

How will Vacasa manage to hit the accelerator on supply acquisition, namely signing up additional homes, when its sales efforts seem to be struggling? Will it lean into portfolio acquisitions, which bring their own set of issues?

How Did Trivago Calibrate Its Marketing Spend?

Trivago launched some TV campaigns in certain markets in May, and vowed to lean into or out of brand or performance marketing spend depending on various factors such as demand.

So what were the demand trends for Trivago during the quarter and how did they impact marketing spend?

Is Trivago making any progress on its business model shift in taking its own bookings for weekend getaways, and is there anything of significance to report about its relatively new foray into business-to-business partnerships?

Did MakeMyTrip’s Partnerships Help Expansion Into Smaller Cities?

MakeMyTrip launched a payments and fintech partnership with PhonePe in April on top of its exclusive partnership in India with Amazon for flights.

Both partnerships fit in with MakeMyTrip’s goal to increase market share by burrowing further into so-called tier 3 and tier 4 cities. Will MakeMyTrip shed light on progress on these fronts, as well as how inflation may be affecting its outlook for the rest of the calendar year?

Did MakeMyTrip debut or test any new fintech products during the quarter?

Lastminute.com Faces Fraud Probe

We hope Lastminute.com, formerly known as Bravofly Rumbo Group, will have something to say about the Covid-relief fraud probe that has ensnared top executives.

Beyond that investigation, in which the Swiss have frozen around $7 million in Lastminute.com accounts, it will be interesting to see how both the Russia-Ukraine war and the weakness of the euro have impacted the company’s operations.

Is Lastminute.com’s packaged holiday business still showing strength?

Does Despegar Have a Shield From North America’s Inflationary Pressures?

Despegar CEO Damian Scokin said in mid-June that the company was not seeing worries about inflation crimping travel demand in Latin America, as was the concern in North America, adding: “Remember that the Southern hemisphere is still catching up on travel demand vis-a-vis the Northern hemisphere, so there’s still ample room for growth, and we are seeing that.”

Is that still the case?

Does Trip.com Group Have Any Optimism About a Domestic Travel Recovery?

The pandemic has undoubtably rocked Trip.com Group, like or more so than many others, but we’ll be looking to see if company executives express any optimism about a domestic travel recovery in the short-term?

Meanwhile, will there be any signal about when Chinese travelers will again be able to travel beyond their own borders?

 |  Posted by Jaleela Hassennally  |  0

The post Virgin Voyages removes pre-embarkation testing from this week appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily.

Virgin Voyages has responded immediately to the CDC’s decision to discontinue their voluntary COVID-19 Program for cruise ships and will mirror the rest of the travel industry in removing pre-embarkation testing for sailings from this week on EU sailings, and from July 27 on US sailings.

Vaccine requirements will remain in place for both Scarlet Lady, operating out of the US, and Valiant Lady in the EU. Virgin Voyages is currently evaluating this policy and will announce further updates in the near future.

Passenger and crew well-being is the major focus and they continue to follow the advice of their expert medical team. To clarify these updates:

For US sailings, passenger vaccination requirements will now be marked at 90%. This opens the opportunity for passengers who are not vaccinated to contact Virgin Voyages’ Sailor Services to book a sailing if these thresholds are met. Ship crew on all US and EU sailings will maintain their fully vaccinated status.

Other well-being measures implemented during the pandemic, including enhanced air purification systems and deep cleaning/sanitization will be maintained. Virgin Voyages will continue to work closely with the CDC and collaborate with the industry to implement all appropriate measures. Along with the rest of the cruise industry, the brand welcomes the update and autonomy that has been afforded the rest of the travel sector over the past several years.

Why Extended Stay Hotels Aren’t in Just a Hype Cycle

0

[ad_1]

Skift Take

A few plausible reasons explain why many investors and brands are checking into the extended-stay hotel category. The bottom line is that they expect to leave with suitcases full of profits for a long time.

Extended-stay hotels are a hot topic lately.

  • This year Blackstone and Starwood Capital bought 111 WoodSpring Suites hotels for $1.5 billion.
  • Last year, the same two investment firms took over the mid-priced chain Extended Stay America in a $6 billion deal.
  • During the pandemic, extended stay, particularly in the economy segment, proved more resilient than other hotel categories.
  • Giant hotel groups like Marriott have been reaffirming their commitment to the category, which includes hotels whose rooms have fully equipped kitchens and typically have larger rooms and access to laundry machines.

You might suspect extended stay hotels are in a hype cycle that can’t last.

  • After all, extended-stay hotels have been popular in the past couple of years for pandemic-related reasons, such as social distancing concerns and the demand for traveling nurses. But those factors are fading.
  • Vacation rentals and short-term rentals seem to be swelling the supply of places where travelers can stay long-term. These alternative accommodations are increasingly run by professional management companies, including some branded “aparthotel” offerings from companies, such as Blueground and Placemakr.

Yet extended-stay hotels have favorable, long-term tailwinds, according to Mark Skinner, a partner at the Highland Group. Skinner has been advising on hotel investment for 28 years.

Demand is outpacing supply in most U.S. markets, Skinner said. That’s the most critical factor.

  • Skinner cited not-before-published survey data from the Highland Group, collected on U.S. extended stay hotels for the three months ending on January 31.
  • In the economy segment, demand was increasing by 11 percent, while supply was increasing by 4 percent. That’s an almost three-to-one demand-to-supply imbalance.
  • In the mid-price segment of extended-stay hotels, demand was increasing by 17 percent, while supply was increasing by 3 percent. That’s a five-to-one demand-to-supply ratio.
  • In the upscale segment of extended-stay hotels, demand was increasing 25 percent, while supply was increasing 4 percent.
  • “Those numbers have compressed some since, but demand is still outstripping supply,” Skinner said. “All three segments are at record-high demand.”
  • “Construction on a national level of extended stay hotels is at the lowest it’s been for nine years.”
  • The study counted hotels whose rooms have fully equipped kitchens and which take reservations rather than requiring a lease.

A national housing crisis has been bolstering demand for extended-stay hotels, particularly in the economy segment, Skinner said.

  • After the 2008 financial crisis, home construction failed to keep pace with demand in many U.S. markets. This year’s rising construction costs and tighter underwriting terms for loans are undermining supply creation, too.
  • Check out this quote from Bloomberg: “In 2019, a survey of budget extended-stay hotels in suburban Gwinnett County, northeast of Atlanta, found 45 percent of the room nights booked were for stays of 30 days or more. Such a long stay often is a sign of residency. By 2021, that number had jumped to 67 percent, according to the Highland Group.”
  • Skinner said the phenomenon isn’t confined to the budget segment. “It’s creeping up the rate scale,” Skinner said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen so many 30-plus-consecutive-night stays in upscale extended-stay hotel brands — the likes of Residence Inn and Hyatt House.”
  • The demand is an impetus for builders to construct both more hotels and residential inventory. “But this housing crisis won’t be solved overnight,” Skinner said.

More U.S. government spending on infrastructure will also support long-term demand for extended-stay hotels.

  • “Most of the federal infrastructure projects haven’t even started yet — and they’re everywhere,” Skinner said. “And it’s not just the economy segment that will benefit. The construction managers and senior personnel are also on long-term assignments, and they tend to stay at the more expensive extended-stay hotels.“
  • Business travel and international travel will continue to rise in the next couple of years after their pandemic plunges.

A possible recession — if one materializes — won’t cool the extended stay boom by much, Skinner predicted.

  • “If there’s a recession, the other demand drivers will stay mostly in place, and the highest impact would be on the upscale segment,” Skinner said.
  • Bloomberg Economics only puts the chances of a U.S. recession in the next year at one in three.
  • Would an increase in capital restraints somehow affect weaker companies in this sector? “No, I don’t really see that,” Skinner said.

Skinner is worth listening to. He’s seen it all over nearly three decades of boom-and-bust cycles in hotel investment.
