Floyd Mayweather hails Conor McGregor as ‘knockout version’ of himself

‘Conor McGregor is the Caucasian Floyd Mayweather’: Boxing legend hails Irishman as ‘knockout version’ of himself whilst chatting to comedian Kevin Hart in ice bath

  • Mayweather said: ‘McGregor is the Caucasian Mayweather, a knockout version’

Floyd Mayweather has praised Conor McGregor as the ‘knockout version’ of himself.

The American boxing legend opened up to comedian Kevin Hart about his career whilst the pair soaked in ice baths.

One of the subjects they discussed was Mayweather’s stoppage win over the Irishman back in August 2017.

And despite the build-up packed with animosity, manufactured or otherwise, Mayweather was effusive in his praise for the ‘Notorious’.

‘McGregor is the Caucasian Floyd Mayweather, you know, he’s a knockout version, he’s a hell of a knockout version. I take my hat off to him, he’s a dog.

‘I wanted the man to have a career after me, it sounded good for him to say (that he thought the stoppage was early),’ he said on Cold As Balls All Stars.

After dismantling MMA fighter Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition at the end of last year, rumours are persisting about whether the retired 50-0 fighter will come out to compete again.

He has flirted with a move into MMA and again spoke about that possibility, though in reality he would stand almost no chance against a martial artist.

‘Anything is possible, I could go get a deal right now from the UFC, three or four fight billion dollar deal if that’s what I wanted.

‘I’m going to be honest, my life is great, smart investments. I can buy whatever I want to buy every month,’ he added.

Despite the ‘Money Man’ image, Mayweather comes from humble beginnings and opened up on his early struggles.

‘It was a long journey, I come from a fighting family, seven of us in one bedroom in Jersey. Dad was a hustler, former fighter and hustler, Mom had it extremely hard but we made it happen.

‘From day one I knew it, I didn’t get into boxing for the fame. I saw my mother in a nursing home, she was barely making ends meet and my Dad was in prison so I rolled the dice.

‘I was in Atlanta right after the Olympic Games, I got a call from Top Rank in Las Vegas. They cut a six figure cheque and within a year and a half I was world champion.

‘From the first time I stepped into a boxing gym, my Dad used to say, the less you get hit the longer you’ll be able to last and I was able to fight professionally for 21 years. They keep calling the shoulder roll the ‘Philly shell’ and that’s called the Mayweather defence,’ he boasted.

With masterful defence, Mayweather has rarely been troubled in his two decades fighting. But he did name-check Manny Pacquiao as one of his more challenging opponents.

‘I’ve been in fights when in the third or fourth round I know it’s going to be a rough night. One of the best I faced was Manny Pacquiao, he’s a future hall of famer. I kept my distance and then just kept turning him,’ he reflected.

There has been talk of a rematch with the Filipino but it seems Mayweather is content to enjoy the spoils of his career from the safety of retirement.

France are in a corner after Wales capitulation and that’s why I’m worried for England at Twickenham

0

[ad_1]

I have been in France this week and their team have been absolutely slaughtered by the press following their capitulation to Wales.

The usual suspects have been blamed: they have too many foreigners; the clubs are too strong; the players are too heavy — but I would rather be coaching France than England for this game.

This is the reverse of last weekend where England went in with everyone lauding Ireland and the past week will have been a really tough one for head coach Eddie Jones. So much energy went into preparing for Ireland and it will take a lot to refocus, especially when going from underdog to overwhelming favourites.

France were slaughtered after a capitulation against Wales but they are a danger to England

Having beaten Ireland, England went from underdogs to overwhelming favourites this week

I would be worried if I were England. Everyone has been building them up after their great win last week and no one is giving France a hope. They might have lost 15 of their last 18 Tests but expect fireworks.

The great American football coach Vince Lombardi said ‘winning is a habit, unfortunately so is losing’. France epitomise that. They have to learn how to win, because at the moment they are experts in losing.

I am a big fan of French rugby and they are the only international team I would coach outside of England. They are a seriously talented side who like playing against England, are not intimidated by Twickenham and are in a corner so will be very dangerous.

They threw away a 16-point half-time lead against Wales last week to lose but they won 100 per cent of their lineouts and 100 per cent of their scrums. Brilliant.

But Morgan Parra missed seven points from the tee and Camille Lopez three. If only they had a world-class goal-kicker like Owen Farrell or Jonny Wilkinson, they would have ticked all three key boxes to win an international.

Their mistakes were down to fatigue rather than being a bad team. Look at the mistakes of Yoann Huget, dropping the ball on his line so that George North could score, and Sebastien Vahaamahina, throwing a bad pass at the end which was intercepted. I don’t think that would have happened in the first 10 minutes.

I can’t understand why international players are not fit. That is not the clubs’ fault; at this level it is down to the individual player.

They lost the Wales game because of fitness, which means you don’t touch the ball down when you should, you throw a speculative pass when you shouldn’t, you start to miss kicks at goals and then you forget who the captain is.

That all comes from being off the pace mentally and physically.

Fitness was the reason they collapsed against Wales and responsibility lands with the players

Fitness was the reason they collapsed against Wales and responsibility lands with the players

Fitness was the reason they collapsed against Wales and responsibility lands with the players

But at the start they were brilliant and that is how England must assume they are going to play for the full 80 minutes.

Last Friday night at half-time the coach needed to say to them: ‘Win the second half and you win the game’. There is no way they should have lost.

The French approach to substitutions drives me nuts. Parra had an awful time off the tee but was outstanding elsewhere and is one of their true leaders.

They also removed Louis Picamoles, one of their truly world-class players, and captain Guilhelm Guirado just as they regained the lead. Why would you ever take him off in such circumstances? It is no surprise the pass which was intercepted was thrown after his exit.

If they were going into the England game with the same squad who played against Wales I think they would have had a real chance of winning.

What has swung it back England’s way are injuries to Wesley Fofana and Uini Atonio and a few panic selections — they have dropped Paul Willemse and Wenceslas Lauret and moved Huget to full-back in place of Maxime Medard.

England cannot afford to take the visitors lightly or they risk suffering a Six Nations upset

England cannot afford to take the visitors lightly or they risk suffering a Six Nations upset

England cannot afford to take the visitors lightly or they risk suffering a Six Nations upset

By changing a couple of their pack their much-talked about ‘heaviest-ever pack’ is now lighter than England’s, so expect them to be more dynamic. Having said that, France need to be well ahead with 20 minutes to go or England will win it.

I really like the England team again and am happy with Chris Ashton replacing Jack Nowell. Nowell was outstanding in Ireland but at home against France I feel Ashton will find the space that makes him so dangerous.

The only other change is Courtney Lawes coming in for the injured Maro Itoje, so it is still a very strong team, as it was last week.

I am a little surprised by England’s bench changes, though, with Ellis Genge and Harry Williams making way for Ben Moon and Dan Cole. That is a little negative. I think Genge and Williams are Jones’s World Cup replacements.

Moon is good but the Cole selection is a little strange, Jones having left the Leicester prop out of the autumn teams.

Courtney Lawes (left) and Chris Ashton (right) coming into the side is good news for England

The fact that England and France face each other in the final group game of the World Cup makes this even more intriguing.

In 2002 we prepared for South Africa in the autumn as if were the pool game coming a year later. It was the most violent game I have ever seen.

Do not write France off, this is going to be a really tight match and you often see a great response after a great disaster. But England have enough to win it — by a single score.

Eddie Jones back his ‘try-poacher’ Chris Ashton to start fast against France

0

[ad_1]

Chris Ashton’s last involvement in the Six Nations came a year ago and France were in his sights. He was assessing them as a television pundit, not that the event sticks in his mind.

It was February 23, 2018, and the Sale wing was armed with a microphone on the touchline as France took on Italy in Marseilles. Asked about broadcasting at the Stade Velodrome, he initially denied it on Friday.

Then it came back to him and the memory served as a surreal reminder of just how far he has come since last summer. ‘It was a year ago and I’d never have thought then that we’d be sitting here now, with me about to play France,’ said the 31-year-old.

He spoke about being recalled by Eddie Jones, for a starting place out wide in the England side to face France at Twickenham on Sunday, following a four-minute cameo in Dublin last Saturday, as the national team swept aside title-holders Ireland.

When he did his forgettable stint as a pundit, he was playing down the road at Toulon and blazing a trail in the Top 14, on his way to a record-breaking haul of tries last season. But so much changed so fast in the months that followed, starting with selection for the Barbarians and a hat-trick against England at Twickenham — which reminded Jones and the public here about his enduring predatory instincts.

Next came the release from his contract with the Cote d’Azur club and a transfer to Sale, bringing him back into range of a Test recall. A harsh pre-season ban threatened to derail the comeback but it ultimately didn’t.

Ashton started against the All Blacks in November, scoring an early try as England pushed the world champions all the way before succumbing to a narrow 15-16 defeat.

He has continued in prolific fashion for his new club and after serving as one of Jones’s so-called ‘finishers’ last weekend, the irony is that Ashton has been included in the starting team this time, on account of his finishing prowess.

Jack Nowell has not been dropped, as such. He did nothing wrong in Dublin. Indeed, he contributed well to a momentous win. Jones has just settled on a different horse for this particular course.

England have developed a handy habit of striking at the start of games. In each of the last four Tests, they have scored tries in the opening minutes.

The management believe Ashton is the man to continue that useful trend.

Jones suggested that he had demonstrated an ‘unrelenting desire’ to play for England again and added: ‘He brings us something different that we think is going to be valuable at the start of the game. He’s a finisher.

‘We feel that maybe early in the game, as he did against New Zealand, he can find the line for us, which could be important.

‘He’s got a good awareness of opportunities. It’s not something that you coach, it’s something players develop at a young age and then continue to develop. He’s a try-poacher.’

Ashton hasn’t started a Six Nations game since the English capitulation in Cardiff in 2013, when they went to the Welsh capital seeking a Grand Slam and were thrashed 30-3.

He could not remember that, either, but that might have been a coping mechanism.

When asked to reflect on his last championship start, Ashton said: ‘I struggle with last week — was it five years ago? I’ve had a good few years watching the Six Nations and it’s such a great tournament, so I’m just happy to be part of it again.

‘When you’re younger and you’re in the team, you never think it’s going to be your last game. You think you’re going to have years at it, but that wasn’t the case for me. I definitely understand what it’s like to not be involved and not have the shirt, so it’s a big privilege for me to be back in.’

Courtney Lawes is the other player added to a successful England XV from the opening win against Ireland, so there will be no loss of experience, know-how, or physical clout. These are going to be vital qualities on Sunday.

Coaches and players have talked about raising the bar, but that will be quite some task. Jones’s men touched the stars in Dublin, when they were the underdogs and the opposition had been feted in the build-up.

Courtney Lawes is the other man to come into the side and will provide plenty of ballast

Courtney Lawes is the other man to come into the side and will provide plenty of ballast

This time England are favourites.

Much work will have gone into making sure they reach the same emotional pitch as they did in Dublin, but it is not a precise science. There is no way of knowing if they can scale those peaks again until the game is underway.

The sheer physical stature of the France side — with a recalled Mathieu Bastareaud in midfield — should focus English minds. Jacques Brunel’s team are massive, but have already shown, in that remarkable defeat by Wales last Friday night, that they lack the mental strength to go with their physical attributes.

This will be a thunderous clash, but the visitors are there for the taking after throwing away a 16-point half-time lead last week. Even if England were to make hard work of beating them, France are always capable of beating themselves.

Last year in Paris, Les Bleus won 22-16, but that was during an England slump that has been arrested and reversed.

The latest evidence suggests that the home side will be more disciplined this time, more combative at the breakdown, more resolute in defence and armed with far more firepower.

The evidence suggests they can start fast and finish on top.

This French team are not fit and are not focused… until they open their box of tricks

This French team are not fit and are not focused… until they open their box of tricks as they prepare to face England

  • France are nowhere near one of the fittest teams in world rugby in this moment
  • That is an area Eddie Jones and England can look to exploit at Twickenham
  • The French have lots of tricks up their sleeve to try and slow matches down
  • But if England weather an early storm, the heads of the French players will drop

Joe Marler for the Daily Mail

It wouldn’t surprise me if the France team are sitting around their hotel eating a few macaroons, drinking coffee and puffing away on a packet of Marlboro Lights.

Whenever you play against a French team, it’s pretty common to see one of their players having a fag while they’re waiting for the bus. It amazes me that it still goes on in professional rugby, but it does.

France are nowhere near being one of the fittest teams in world rugby and England will set out to exploit that.

France are nowhere near the fittest team in world rugby and England can look to exploit that

France are nowhere near the fittest team in world rugby and England can look to exploit that

France are nowhere near the fittest team in world rugby and England can look to exploit that

England, Wales, Ireland and New Zealand all talk about how fit they are. There was a time when Warren Gatland would say it so often that everyone believed him, but have you ever heard the French claim to be the fittest side? They don’t even pretend.

They beat us last year and it was a dark, dark day to be an England player.

They slowed the game down to their pace by throwing huge bodies into the breakdown to stop our quick ball. We had no answer to it and, having lost to Scotland the week before, it was the start of a downward spiral.

They have every trick up their sleeve to slow the game down. They’ll stop to tie up their shoe lace — the ‘KitKat’ move — walk to the lineouts at snail’s pace and reset the scrums.

They will look to slow the game down and have a number of tricks up their sleeve to do that

They will look to slow the game down and have a number of tricks up their sleeve to do that

They will look to slow the game down and have a number of tricks up their sleeve to do that

You’ll probably see one of their biggest forwards lying on top of Ben Youngs. He’ll claim he’s being sneaky and tactical by taking out the scrum-half, but it’s probably just an excuse for a breather.

France were terrible in the second half against Wales. It’s the ultimate rugby cliche, but you never know whether they’re going to be brilliant or dull in attack, have a great set-piece or not give a damn.

You never know which France team will turn up, but I expect England to win by 20 points. There’s only so much you can analyse Les Bleus because they don’t have much structure. They always turn up, scream out the anthem as loud as they can and play well for the first five minutes.

The French team lack structure and despite starting games strong their heads very often drop

The French team lack structure and despite starting games strong their heads very often drop

The French team lack structure and despite starting games strong their heads very often drop

But if things aren’t going well in that first five minutes, they very quickly drop their heads. All you can do is analyse their individuals. No 8 Louis Picamoles is the best barometer of the France team.

If he’s in the game, everyone else will feed off him. If he’s not in the game, he’s very laissez-faire and it’s obvious that he doesn’t give a damn.

He can be world class one minute but he can be a completely poisonous influence on the pack if he’s not getting his way. England will try to harass him and wind him up in the knowledge that will affect the rest of the group.

Then you’ll start to see players waving their hands in the air, gobbing off in French and bitching at each other — and England will pounce.

England will try to harass No 8 Louis Picamoles in a bid to get to the rest of the French squad

England will try to harass No 8 Louis Picamoles in a bid to get to the rest of the French squad

England will try to harass No 8 Louis Picamoles in a bid to get to the rest of the French squad

GRAND SILENCE!

The words ‘Grand Slam’ will not even have been whispered in camp this week.

Maybe they would have before Eddie Jones came in, but that sort of thing has been drilled out of the group.

If Eddie heard a senior boy mention it in the canteen, he’d note it and collar them later in the day. If it was a young pup, he’d give them the full acid-tongue treatment!

ONE TO WATCH

Big Courtney Lawes was absolutely scything the Irish last week. Fortunately, I’ve never been on the end of a ‘Courtney special’.

Courtney Lawes produced a number of 'special' challenges against Ireland in Dublin

If I see him running towards me with his snarling tackle face, I’ll pass the ball to safety!

He’s a great asset to have in defence. He’s not the heaviest bloke, but he’s got a mindset of, ‘I’m going to end you’, and you can’t coach that.

He loves it. Ironically, he’s the most horizontal and placid bloke off the pitch.

After training he’s straight back to his room with his Netflix set up on the laptop and the Clash of Clans game on his iPhone. He spends half of his England match fees buying digital coins!

You always know if Courtney’s in the room next door because the Wi-Fi keeps going down!

‘I’ve got a big fight ahead of me’: Wales and Manchester United legend Mickey Thomas diagnosed with stomach cancer as fans launch fundraising page to raise £20,000

  • Former Man United midfielder Mickey Thomas has been diagnosed with cancer
  • The Wales legend was given the news about stomach cancer after Christmas
  • He is to begin treatment in February as fans set up a fundraising page for him

Nathan Salt For Mailonline

Manchester United and Wales legend Mickey Thomas has opened up on the ‘big fight ahead’ after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The former Wrexham midfielder, who is famously remembered for scoring a free-kick against Arsenal for the Welsh side in the FA Cup in 1992, was given the news just after Christmas.

A popular figure at all the clubs he represented during his career, fans set up a fundraising page following the news in a bid to raise £20,000 to help Thomas during his treatment.

At the time of writing the GoFundMe page had raised over £4,200 with 115 donations.

Speaking to WalesOnline, Thomas said: ‘I’ve got a serious problem. I know that and I’ve got a big fight ahead of me obviously.

‘It’s one that I’ve not foreseen coming, but obviously it’s happening and I’ve just got to get on with it. It’s quite scary so I’ve just got to wait and see. I’ve obviously got a lot of treatments to come and lots of chemotherapy and an operation to come as well.

‘I can only wait to see how I respond to that sort of treatment.’

The fundraising page was started by Debbie Savage in Timperley and she appealed to the ‘United family’ to contribute to the cause.

She wrote: ‘Mickey Thomas’s life has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, representing club and country at the highest level, including 90 appearances for his beloved Manchester United, but he is currently facing the biggest battle: beating cancer.

‘Diagnosed with stomach cancer in January 2019, Mickey starts chemo and radiotherapy treatment on 11th February, followed by an operation to remove the tumour and then another course of chemo.

‘Unable to work while going through treatment, Mickey has no source of income, so his friends are getting together to raise money to help cover his living and travel expenses, plus some of the medical expenses related to the treatments he requires – including having all of his teeth replaced.

‘He shouldn’t be worrying about money during this tough time; we want his focus to be on beating this awful disease and getting back with us all as soon as possible.

‘Still such a presence around Old Trafford and very much a part of the United family, Mickey is one of the most loveable guys you could meet. He is full of life, fun-loving and generous beyond belief, so please give what you can and join us in supporting him in his fight.’

Thomas revealed he was having trouble swallowing his food and was suffering repeated cases of sickness which saw him referred to the hospital where a diagnosis was swiftly made.

The 64-year-old enjoyed a glittering playing career and has since forged a successful career working in the media covering United and Wrexham.

A recent photograph with UFC superstar Conor McGregor showed how highly he is regarded across the world and fans have shown through the fundraising page they will do all they can to help him make a speedy recovery.

Saracens reached the Premiership Rugby Cup final with an emphatic 38-22 win over Worcester.

Tries from scrum-half Tom Whiteley and wing Rotimi Segun, the former converted by Alex Lozowski, put Sarries 12-0 up inside 10 minutes and centre Lozowski tacked on two penalties to make it 18-0.

Worcester finally got on the board with a Scott Van Breda penalty and though Whiteley brilliantly held Matt Cox up on the line, their first try soon arrived courtesy of full-back Nick David.

He collided with team-mate Tom Howe as he scored and, like hooker Niall Annett before him, left the field using his shirt as a makeshift sling.

Lozowski landed two more penalties and though Howe’s try cut the deficit once more, Max Malins raced clear for a third Sarries try on the hour.

Another thrilling break from the fly-half set up the fourth for replacement Sione Vailanu.

Despite Howe’s late consolation, Saracens will play Northampton or Newcastle in next month’s final.
