The are protected after Godfrey signed a new five-year contract in the summer of 2018.

Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw backs his side to weather Irish storm in Murrayfield showdown

Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw backs his side to weather Irish storm in Murrayfield showdown: ‘It’s going to be massive, the start of the game’

  • Ireland will be desperate for a win after suffering defeat against England
  • Scotland are anticipating reaction from the off and quick start from visitors
  • Greig Laidlaw predicted: ‘The key is us being up for that first 20 minutes’

Rob Robertson For The Scottish Daily Mail

Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw is confident his side can weather the storm as a wounded Ireland come calling at Murrayfield for Saturday’s Six Nations showdown.

The hosts are expecting an Irish onslaught from the off as Joe Schmidt’s men look to bounce back from their humbling at the hands of England last weekend in Dublin.

Strong winds and heavy rain are also expected to cause havoc at the national stadium but Laidlaw believes the Scots have a game-plan to cope both with the opposition and the atrocious weather.

‘It’s going to be massive, the start of the game,’ said the No 9. ‘The key is us being up for that first 20 minutes. If we can make that good start, make sure we’re nice and disciplined, stay in the kick battle then we can win.

‘The weather certainly doesn’t make it easier in terms of how both teams want to play. It makes things difficult.

‘Passing, kicking, everything becomes harder. We feel, though, we’ve got a good game-plan to be able to cope with these conditions.

‘We’ll also need the fans from the off. The big wins we’ve had here, beating teams like Australia, Argentina, Ireland a couple of years ago, France and England, the supporters have been incredible.

‘This game is a sell-out and it’s a reflection of how the team’s been playing. Every time we run out here, we’re representing the people who come to the matches, the people who watch us on TV, not just ourselves, so we’re looking forward to that again and their great support.’

Laidlaw also revealed he had sought out Blair Kinghorn for a chat after he was dropped from the starting XV despite scoring a hat-trick of tries against Italy.

‘I spoke to Blair,’ he said. ‘He’s clearly disappointed. He understands. The best thing for him is that he can still impact the game from the bench. The type of player and person he is, I know he will be ready to go, given that opportunity.

‘That’s excellent for us as a team. We’re not a XV, we’re a 23 – and we’ll need that. It comes back to that strength in depth. The fact that we can pick Sean (Maitland) and still have Blair to come on is excellent.’

Ireland prop Cian Healy, who was part of the side that lost 27-22 at Murrayfield two years ago, has warned his team-mates to be on their guard against the ‘crafty’ Scots.

Healy watched with a mixture of awe and embarrassment when his side was caught cold in the 2017 Six Nations showdown, with centre Alex Dunbar joining a lineout before going over for a clever try.

‘Crafty, wasn’t it?’ said Healy. ‘That’s the sort of thing they’ve been doing. They’re creative, there’s no doubt about it.’

Gelena: classe 2 maintenue | lexpress.mu

Formula One loses lucrative broadcast contract as beIN Sports decide not to renew its deal

Formula One loses lucrative broadcast contract as beIN Sports decide not to renew its deal after Saudi piracy row

  •  The region’s biggest sports network signed a five-year deal with F1 in 2014
  • It has failed to see sufficient return on its estimated £150million investment
  • Pirate broadcaster, beoutQ has allegedly stolen beIN’s sports rights

Press Association Reporter

Qatar-based beIN Sports has decided not to renew its deal for Formula One’s broadcast rights in the Middle East and North Africa, accusing the sport of ‘paying lip service’ to the fight against piracy.

The region’s biggest sports network signed a five-year deal with F1 in 2014 but it has failed to see sufficient return on its estimated £150million investment, particularly over the last 18 months.

That is when beoutQ arrived on the scene. Launched in Saudi Arabia in August 2017, the pirate broadcaster has allegedly stolen beIN’s sports rights and rebroadcast them via a Saudi-owned satellite network and its own streaming service.

BeIN has repeatedly complained about this, pointing out beoutQ’s ties to the Saudi regime, with whom Qatar is locked in a bitter diplomatic dispute.

The football authorities – including the Premier League, UEFA and FIFA – have started legal action in support of beIN, saying piracy is posing a significant threat to the game’s financial health.

F1, on the other hand, has been less proactive, certainly in public, and that has clearly damaged relations with beIN.

In a statement, beIN’s managing director for the region, Tom Keaveny, said: ‘A rights-holder’s stance on beoutQ’s piracy – in other words whether they’re taking legal action, making a public stand and doing everything within their power to combat the industrial-scale theft of their rights – is a critical factor that we’re now considering when bidding.

‘We pay enormous amounts for media rights, but the natural consequence of Saudi Arabia’s piracy is that those rights cannot be protected so we will pay less for those rights in the future, in particular to the rights-holders who pay only lip service to combating beoutQ.

‘We have been warning of the very real commercial consequences of beoutQ’s theft of world sport and entertainment for almost two years now, yet the piracy continues with impunity every day and represents an existential threat to the economic model of the sports and entertainment industry. The international community must take decisive action to bring this state-supported piracy to an immediate end.’

FIFA started legal action against beoutQ during the World Cup, and both the Premier League and UEFA have said they are taking steps, too, but so far the Saudi Arabian government has denied responsibility.

Shortly after last summer’s World Cup, three leading technology companies issued reports saying beoutQ is being broadcast on Saudi-controlled Arabsat satellites and, in October, the Qatari government launched a case against its neighbour at the World Trade Organisation, claiming more than one billion US dollars (£775million) in compensation.

BeIN’s decision to walk away from F1 is a huge blow to Liberty Media, which paid more than £3billion for the sport in 2017, with the intention of growing it beyond its European heartlands.

It also follows recent reports of growing criticism for the US-based company within the sport and its shares were trading two per cent down on Friday after beIN’s announcement.

Speaking to Press Association Sport, an F1 spokesman refused to get drawn into the specifics of beIN’s complaint but said: ‘We are currently finalising a deal with a broadcaster for the region and we will confirm the details when we can.’
