Romelu Lukaku celebrates Paul Pogba’s fantastic opening goal in Manchester United’s win at Fulham… but not before venting his anger at why his team-mate didn’t pass to him

  • Manchester United eased past Fulham to put themselves into the top four
  • Paul Pogba put United ahead with a fantastic finish in the first half on Saturday
  • As he scored, Romelu Lukaku hilariously demanded that Pogba passed to him
  • As the ball nestles in the net, Lukaku realises before applauding Pogba’s strike

Sam Mcevoy For Mailonline

Manchester United‘s fairytale start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued on Saturday when they eased past Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Paul Pogba netted a brace in the 3-1 win while Anthony Martial capped off a fantastic day for the Red Devils which saw them leapfrog Chelsea into fourth.

Pogba, who has now scored 10 league goals in a single season for the first time in his career, got the visitors off to an emphatic start as he superbly finished from a difficult angle in the lunchtime kick off.

Everything has been going the Frenchman’s way since Solskjaer’s but someone who’s been needing a bit of momentum at Old Trafford as of late is Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian striker started up top for United against the Cottagers and was hoping to break his run of five league games without a goal.

As Pogba thumped home the opener, Lukaku made a run in front of goal in the hope that the midfielder would pass the ball to him for a tap-in.

Replays showed Lukaku hilariously demanding why the ball wasn’t passed to him before quickly realising that the shot had in fact gone in leading to Lukaku applauding his team-mate.

The striker’s reaction, which wasn’t originally noticed at first, was picked up by Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp, Louis Saha and Alex Scott who couldn’t help but laugh at the Belgium international.

Lukaku’s reaction was then picked up by fans on social media, who also saw the funny side of it.

One fan tweeted, ‘Look at Lukaku’s reaction after the goal!!! Still upset Pogba didn’t square it!!!’ which was followed by several laughing emojis.

Another laughed: ‘I don’t get Lukaku’s reaction after Pogba’s first goal, did he want an offside or something.’

However, some interpreted Lukaku’s actions as selfish.

One Twitter used said: ‘Just noticed Lukaku’s reaction to Pogba’s goal. Not a fan of that at all.’

Following the opener, Martial went on to make it 2-0 before Pogba extended United’s lead from the penalty spot.

Fulham eventually pulled one back but it was too little too late as Solskjaer and his men continue to go marching on.

Relaxed Manchester United stars head up north with three more points under their belts

I can’t hear you kid! Head-phone wearing Anthony Martial is greeted by young fans as relaxed United stars head up north after 3-0 win at Fulham

  • Manchester United stars took the train from London back up to Stockport
  • Red Devils fans came out to meet the relaxed looking contingent
  • United earlier secured their tenth win under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Fulham
  • Goals from Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial proved to be the difference

Peter Rutzler For Mailonline

Manchester United‘s stars looked the epitome of contentment as they made their way back up north with yet another three points safely in the bag.

The Red Devils were preparing to travel from London to Stockport by train having earlier beaten Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage, with goals from Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial proving to be the difference.

The ease with which they secured the victory was written in the relaxed looks on their faces as fans came out to greet their rejuvenated heroes.

Anthony Martial was greeted by two young fans but any potential requests for an autograph may have fallen on deaf ears.

The winger wore large blue headphones but was happy to offer a friendly hand on his way out.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked taken aback by the number of fans outside but the rest of the squad looked as though everything was right with the world again.

That’s hardly surprising considering the 20-time champions have rediscovered the feel-good factor in recent weeks.

United are now 11 matches unbeaten under the new manager – of which ten have been victories.

Paul Pogba struck twice as he led his rejuvenated comrades to a comfortable victory at Craven Cottage.

Anthony Martial also etched his name onto the scoresheet – the 50th goal he is been involved in while at the club, comprising 33 goals and 17 assists.

Paris Saint-Germain are next up for Solskjaer’s men in what is undoubtedly the biggest test the club have faced since the departure of Jose Mourinho.

Jurgen Klopp thrilled with Liverpool’s response to slip-ups in comfortable 3-0 win over Bournemouth

‘That’s the reaction we wanted to show’: Jurgen Klopp thrilled with Liverpool’s response to recent slip-ups as Eddie Howe laments lack of VAR for offside Sadio Mane goal

  • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised his players’ reaction to recent results
  • The Reds dropped points against Leicester and West Ham in their last two games
  • But Liverpool came out firing against Bournemouth and ran out 3-0 winners
  • Cherries boss Eddie Howe lamented a lack of VAR for Sadio Mane’s opening goal

Joe Bernstein for The Mail on Sunday

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed his side’s fortitude as they bounced back from a couple of dodgy results to beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield and return to the top of the Premier League.

Gini Wijnaldum clambered off his sickbed and Footballer of the Year Mo Salah maintained his incredible scoring record as Liverpool eased their nerves after successive draws against Leicester and West Ham.

They now lead Manchester City by three points with 12 games left apiece. City play the first of theirs against Chelsea on Sunday.

‘That is the reaction we wanted to show,’ proclaimed Klopp. ‘We are very self-critical and it was clear we were not happy with the two previous performances.

‘We analysed it and wanted to play convincing football and to perform against Bournemouth. That is what we did – it was outstanding and a very good sign for us.’

However, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe also feels Liverpool got the luck of prospective champions after being told by his coaching staff that Sadio Mane’s opening headed goal after 24 minutes shouldn’t have been allowed.

‘It was a huge moment. We set up to frustrate them and we did restrict them space until the first goal. It was half-a-yard offside, a huge turning point.

‘VAR will help in those situations and I think it will benefit everybody (when it’s introduced in the Premier League next season). That type of goal is clearly offside and we will get the right decision.’

With Liverpool nerves on tenterhooks as they chase a first title since 1990, Klopp issued a rallying cry in the pre-match programme, pledging that his team would “relish the moment.”

Wijnaldum declared himself fit having stayed away from the team hotel on Friday night with diarrhoea and added a classy second goal after 34 minutes. ‘I was only concerned when everyone went to hug him,’ quipped Klopp.

Salah then added a third – his 49th Premier League goal in 62 games – and has never gone three league games without a goal for Liverpool.

Klopp said: ‘The mentality of these boys is the only reason we are where we are. People were critical of Milly’s (James Milner) performance against West Ham which was a joke because he was also ill.

Mo’s goal record is really good but the performance was brilliant. He played an outstanding game, Bournemouth found him undefendable.

‘This is the football he is capable of playing. He was involved in everything, sometimes dropping a bit in the half spaces and that is exactly how he has to play.

‘Roberto Firmino gave him that little pass when most players would have tried to shoot, and obviously it was a cool finish from Mo.’

Klopp hugged every player and saluted the Anfield fans at full-time. ‘I would shake the hands of all 50,000 if I could but they wouldn’t be able to keep the stadium open for long enough,’ he said.

‘We can’t play in a stadium that is silent. I am proud of everything including the fans.’

Bayern Munich 3-1 Schalke: Robert Lewandowski runs the show as he inspires win over rivals

[ad_1]

Bayern Munich are not quite what they were.

They are missing the killer instinct, the sense of entitlement and perhaps a touch of the quality they have enjoyed in recent years.

Yet as they cruised to a 3-1 win over Schalke at the Allianz Arena on Saturday evening, it was worth noting that they are still a force to be reckoned with.

A leakier, rustier force perhaps, but a force. Despite the enduring problems of Niko Kovac’s first season in charge, Bayern are still impressive when they want to be.

Despite four defeats in the league this season, victory over Schalke has ensured that they are still very much in the Bundesliga title race.

Having started the day in third, they finished it in second, five points behind Borussia Dortmund.

A week after their 3-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern are back in business again.

The day’s earlier results had been kind to them, with Dortmund throwing a three-goal lead to draw with Hoffenheim and second-placed Gladbach humiliated 3-0 at home to Hertha Berlin.

It was just the latest twist in a curious title race, in which Dortmund have never quite managed to pull away at the top, despite Bayern’s best attempts to help them.

Bayern and Schalke will both face English opposition in the Champions League in the coming weeks, and this game gave a good impression of what awaits Manchester City and Liverpool.

Schalke, simply put, are not very good, and seem doomed to damage limitation against City.

Bayern, meanwhile, can still be thrillingly slick going forward. Liverpool should not underestimate the intelligence and firepower of their attack, even without Arjen Robben. Yet there are also serious weaknesses for the Reds to exploit, most notably at the back.

Kovac had sprung a surprise with his centre-back pairing of Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng.

It was the first time that the two men had started alongside each other since defeat to Dortmund in November, and Boateng’s first start in 2019. It also meant that Niklas Sule, who is by now arguably Bayern’s best centre-back, was left to warm the bench.

It was the Schalke centre-backs, though, who prompted a few raised eyebrows as Bayern took the lead on five minutes.

Flummoxed by James’ pinpoint through ball, Jeffrey Bruma and Salif Sane allowed Robert Lewandowski to squeeze between them, and in the melee of legs, Bruma bundled the ball into his own net.

Twenty minutes of total dominance later, Bayern’s defence was given its first serious test, and promptly flunked it.

After a mistake from James at the other end, a sharp Schalke counter-attack ended with the sight of 18-year-old striker Ahmed Kutucu happily outrunning Boateng and smashing the ball past Sven Ulreich.

Criticism of Boateng has been excessive this season, yet there is no doubt he has lost a yard of pace in recent years. Hummels, meanwhile, was nowhere to be seen, and after a defensive howler in midweek, has every reason to be concerned for his place.

Fortunately for Bayern, they remain ruthless up front. Shortly after the restart, Serge Gnabry pounced on a loose ball; James laid it off neatly for Lewandowski, who fired it home without a care in the world.

This was a moment to cheer Manchester City fans. For a team that often set up to defend, Schalke’s defence is remarkably accident prone.

So it was in the first half, as they attempted to soak up Bayern pressure and gifted them two goals. Not so much parking the bus as parking the bicycle.

2-1 was a half-time score which flattered the visitors. Yet for all their dominance at one end, Bayern remain clunky at the back. Shortly after the break, they were plunged into panic as Schalke surged forward, and cleared their lines only with a dollop of luck.

Moments later, though, they had doubled their lead, as Serge Gnabry redirected Lewandowski’s weak overhead kick with a flick of his head. It was a third goal this week for Gnabry, who is looking an ever more worthy successor to Robben on the right wing.

Lewandowski, meanwhile, will have been wondering how he ended the game with one goal instead of three.

With a quarter of an hour to go, the Pole missed two sitters in the space of two minutes, both from point blank range. He still had a smile on his face at full time, though. Whatever they say, it is not all doom and gloom at Bayern Munich at the moment.

Promesses et craintes du 5G

[ad_1]
