Scotland’s David Law stages stunning late show to overhaul Wade Ormsby and win ISPS Handa Vic Open

  • David Law won the ISPS Handa Vic Open in Australia during dramatic finale
  • Scot was three shots behind long-time leader Wade Ormsby ahead of the 16th
  • But a birdie there and an eagle on the last hole put him firmly in contention
  • Ormsby made a double bogey on the 17th to surrender the lead to Law

Scotland’s David Law produced a spectacular finish to overhaul long-time leader Wade Ormsby and win his first European Tour title at the ISPS Handa Vic Open.

Law was three shots behind as he stood on the 16th tee at 13th Beach Golf Club, but made a birdie there and then produced a stunning second to eight feet on the par-five last to set up an eagle.

That put him in a share of the lead with Ormsby at 18 under and when the home favourite made a double-bogey on the 17th, he needed an eagle of his own on the last to force a play-off.

The 38-year-old gave himself a putt from the fringe for a three but could only make a birdie and Challenge Tour graduate Law had a one-shot victory over Ormsby and Brad Kennedy in just his 18th European Tour appearance.

South Africa’s Justin Harding finished fourth on 16 under with Scotland’s David Drysdale and Australians Jason Scrivener and David Bransdon a shot further back.

The victory represents a remarkable turnaround on the course for Law, who was on the brink of taking on other work over the winter before winning last season’s SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge and finishing 14th on the Challenge Tour.

The 27-year-old had also called a penalty on himself on the ninth, which resulted in a bogey, before he came home in 31.

The tournament is co-sanctioned by the European Tour and LPGA and features men and women playing on the same courses at the same time, for equal prize money.

In the women’s event, France’s Celine Boutier carded a closing 72 to claim a two-shot victory over England’s Charlotte Thomas and local favourites Sarah Kemp and Su Oh.

Kemp surged through the field with a final round of 65 and Thomas returned a 69, while Oh could only manage a 74 and overnight leader Kim Kaufman slumped to a 78 to finish four shots adrift.

Gervonta Davis KOs Hugo Ruiz in final second of first round as Floyd Mayweather’s unbeaten protegee wins WBA super featherweight title

  • Gervonta Davis showed power and class in brutal first round onslaught
  • Referee Jack Reese waved off the contest after Hugo Ruiz suffered KO
  • Davis once again proved he is one of the most exciting talents in boxing

Will Griffee For Mailonline

Gervonta Davis dispatched Hugo Ruiz with one second left in the very first round of their fight for the WBA super featherweight title.

Having swaggered to the ring to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, the American displayed his slick moves in the squared circle.

In front of 8,048 at Dignity Health Sports Park, Davis had the crowd on their feet with a powerful right cross, sending Ruiz to the canvas.

Referee Jack Reese called it off at 2:59 seconds into the first of 12 rounds after the Mexican responded inadequately to his commands.

The 32-year-old failed to react to instructions once he’d hauled himself back up to his feet in time for the count.

Ruiz had stepped in as a late replacement after Davis’ original opponent, three-division champion Abner Mares, withdrew last month after suffering an eye injury.

After his emphatic victory, Davis said: ‘Tonight I just wanted to put on a great performance.

‘I was scheduled to fight Mares, but he had an injury. So my main goal tonight was to make a great performance, which I did.

‘I knew it was coming. When I touched the jab, I saw his arm was in front of his face, so I threw a hook or uppercut it was right in line.’

Floyd Mayweather was sat ringside and observed the 24-year-old extend his record to 21-0 with 20 KO wins. It was a 12th straight win by knockout for the American.

Davis has had a troubled career to date under the tutelage of Mayweather and his self-titled promotion arm.

The Baltimore native missed weight for this fight by 2oz having done the same in two of his previous bouts, one of which prompted the IBF to strip him of his junior lightweight title in 2017.

Following the fight, Davis sported a T-shirt in the ring with the slogan ‘Free 21 Savage’. The British rapper has been detained by US immigration officials who say his visa has expired.
